110 ASSISTED CONCEPTION IN THE FISHING CAT BY LAPAROSCOPIC INTRATUBAL INSEMINATION

Fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) are small (6–15 kg) spotted cats from dispersed areas of Southeast Asia found mostly in wetland habitats. They are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as endangered, with a decreasing population, due to habitat loss and degradation. Few studies have been done on applying assisted breeding techniques to the species, although the birth of a live kitten after IVF/embryo transfer (ET) has been reported (2006 Theriogenology 66, 1518–1524). Here, we describe the birth of a live fishing cat kitten using the technique of laparoscopic intratubal AI. A ten-year-old female who had served previously as an oocyte donor (5×) following gonadotropin treatment was administered a total of 5 IU of porcine FSH (Sioux Biochemical, Sioux City, Iowa) over 4 days (1×/day) followed by 10 IU of porcine LH on the fifth day. At approximately 28 h after LH treatment, the ovaries/oviduct were accessed by a laparoscopic technique comparable to that used for oviducal embryo transfer (ibid.). To deposit semen into the left oviduct, a 16-guage thin-wall trocar/needle was inserted into the abdominal cavity on the right side, approximately 1 cm lateral to the midline and approximately 2 to 3 cm below the umbilicus. A 14-cm open-end tom cat catheter was inserted into the 16-guage cannula (blunt) and the catheter tip was positioned underneath the fimbria overlaying the ovary. Then, a 50-mm length of 30-guage polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) thin-wall tubing containing approximately 30 μL of freshly collected semen was threaded through the catheter and the sample was expelled with positive pressure from a threaded-plunger 1-mL syringe. The left ovary contained 7 to 8 preovulatory (3–4 mm) follicles, 4 of which were manually ruptured immediately after deposition of semen with a 22-guage needle inserted through the 16-guage cannula. Then, with the 16-guage trocar/cannula in the same position (on the right side), the tip was redirected towards the right ovary and approximately 30 μL of semen was deposited underneath the fimbria as described above. The right ovary presented with 5 to 6 preovulatory (3–4 mm) follicles, 2 of which were punctured with the 22-guage needle after insemination. No ovulations were present on either ovary. The semen used for insemination was a fresh sample collected by electroejaculation from a 9-year-old male. The raw sperm concentration was 220 million mL–1, with 70% motility. The number of motile sperm deposited per oviduct was estimated to be approximately 4.6 million. The female was anesthetized 51 days later and radiography was done to determine her pregnancy status. A single fetus was present, so she was moved from an outdoor pen into a large indoor holding pen to allow for video-monitoring during the remainder of gestation. On Day 70, early signs of labour were observed and an elective Caesarean section was done approximately 4 h later. A live, healthy male kitten weighing 204 g was delivered. One year later, gonadotropin treatment/AI were repeated on the same pair. At approximately 30 h post-LH treatment, preovulatory follicles were present, but fewer than the previous treatment (5–6 total). Two fresh ovulation sites were seen on the left ovary. Pregnancy was not established. A reason for the failure was not apparent, unless it was age related.

Background:In the last years the number of exotic company animals has been increased, and the demand for neutering services for these animals has become greater. By the author’s knowledge, there are no records of elective ovariectomy in domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus). The current paper reports a case of elective laparoscopic ovariectomy in a domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus).Case:A 4-month-old domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus), weighing 45 kg was referred to elective video-laparoscopic ovariectomy at the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (HCV - UFRGS). Physical examination and laboratory tests, including hemogram and biochemistry (alanine aminotransferase - ALT, serum albumin and creatinine), were within normal range for the species. Ketamine hydrochloride (Cetamin®) 10 mg.kg-1, xylazine hydrochloride (Xilazin®) 2 mg.kg-1, and midazolam (Midazolam®) 0.5 mg.kg-1 were administered intramuscularly (IM) as pre-anesthetic medication. The anesthetic induction was performed with intravenous (IV) propofol (Propovan®) and anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane (Isoforine®) diluted in O2 by a universal vaporizer with a partial gas rebreathing anesthetic system. Throughout the procedure, were monitoring constantly the invasive blood pressure (IBP), electrocardiogram (ECG) in lead II, peripheral arterial saturation with O2 (SpO2), end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration (ETCO2), and esophageal temperature. The abdominal cavity was accessed through the insertion of three portals (one of 10 mm of diameter and other two of 5 mm of diameter). The cavity was inflated with medicinal CO2 until the pressure of 10 mmHg was achieved. The uterine body and ovaries were identified. The right ovary was suspended and, by a bipolar clamp, the ovarian vessels were occluded through electrocoagulation in three distinct locations with approximately 0,5 cm between themselves, and cut off. The right ovary was removed from the cavity. An identic maneuver was used for the realization of the surgical steps and removal of the left ovary. By the end, the cavity was deflated and the cannulas were removed. The abdominal wall was sutured with Sultan pattern with 3-0 polyglycolic acid thread, and the skin was sutured with simple interrupted suture with 3-0 nylon monofilament. The post-operative evaluations were subjective and fitting with the patient's behavior. The patient didn't show any clinical signs of pain, discomfort and returned to its usual eating habits on the second day after the procedure. No signs of infection, dehiscence, cicatrization retard or other complications were observed in the surgical wound. The stitches were removed after seven days.Discussion: This case report shows the applicability of the video-laparoscopic ovariectomy technique by three portals in other species than dogs and cats, and serves as bibliographic support to the veterinary endosurgery field. Based on previous studies, it has been concluded that minimally invasive procedures represent the most beneficial sterilization methods to the patient due to its diagnostical and surgical capacity, as well as minor surgical trauma and shorter recovery time. The most common indication for the video-laparoscopic technique in veterinary routine is the elective sterilization. Pyometra, urinary incontinence and weight gain are complications that are not diagnosed more frequently after ovariectomy when compared to ovariohysterectomy. The laparoscopic ovariectomy is a viable technique to be applied to the swine, with the most difficult aspect being the anatomical peculiarities of the animal.

Diagnostic guidelines were established for progeny testing of hereditary bovine syndactyly. Through the use of superovulation and embryo transfer, 139 fetuses were recovered at 50 to 77 days gestation. Normal (+/+, +/sy) and syndactylous (sy/sy) anatomy of Holstein fetuses was denned, and the accuracy of macroscopic versus microscopic limb diagnosis was assessed. Chondrification and ossification differences between normal (+/+, +/sy) and syndactylous (sy/sy) fetuses were only age-related. Normal (+/+, +/sy) fetal limbs differed from normal (+/+, +/sy) adult bovine limbs in two ways. Fetal metacarpal and metatarsal III and IV bones were not fused, and fetal metacarpal and metatarsal II and V bones often extended up to three-fourths the length of metacarpal and metatarsal III and IV bones. In syndactylous (sy/sy) fetuses, synostosis asymmetries occurred within and between fetal limbs, and between fetuses, representing variable gene expressivity. Synostosis pattern within limbs did not correspond with those of the adult bovine; the second phalangeal pair was synostotic most frequently in the fetus, followed by the first, and then the third pair. Synostosis patterns between fetal limbs agreed with those of the adult; there was a right-left and front-rear limb gradient. Partial synostoses occurred sporadically in all three paired phalanges. Those of the first and third pair always involved the tip closest to the second phalangeal pair. A unique example of variable gene expressivity occurred in one syndactylous fetus. Both front limbs were syndactylous, while both rear limbs were normal grossly. Microscopically the right rear limb was normal while the left rear limb consisted of closely apposed phalangeal blastemata without coalescence. This supported the theory that syndactyly resulted from fusion rather than nondivision of blastemata. There was not 100% accuracy in macroscopic limb diagnosis of fetuses derived from progeny testing for bovine hereditary syndactyly; discrepencies occurred in limbs with partial phalangeal synostoses and in the limb with closely apposed phalangeal blastemata. Therefore, it is recommended that all fetuses undergo macroscopic and microscopic limb examination before a final diagnosis is reached and recommendations for breeding programs are made.

 Although Sonali chicken is introduced to the poultry industry of Bangladesh during 1999-2000 and after that playing a pivotal role in national economy, no literature is available regarding histomorphometry of spleen of Sonali chicken. As spleen is a key component of chicken’s defense mechanism, the study was designed to investigate the age related development of spleen of Sonali chicken, i.e, morphohistology and biometry at several postnatal stages. The investigation was carried out on 25 healthy Sonali chickens representing different ages at after hacting days 1, 14, 28, 42, and 56 (n=5). After ethically sacrifice (cervical subluxation method), spleen was collected and subjected for both macro and microscopic examinations. Haematoxylin and Eosin stain was done for the later. Morphologically, spleen was found lying dorsally at the right side of the abdominal cavity. It was oval or rounded organ, reddish brown in color. The gross morphometric observations (average weight, organ index, length, width and thickness) found significantly increasing throughout the tenure (p<0.001). In microscopic study, no trabeculae and identifying marginal zone was recorded in the splenic parenchyma of Sonali chicken. And a component of white pulp (lymphatic nodules) appeared at day 14 onward. This study gives an insight about the age correlated development of spleen of Sonali chicken at different age intervals which advance our knowledge and leads an array for further immunization researches about immunological activities and molecular detection of spleen, which would be impossible without learning the basic anatomy. Background: Shear wave electrography (SWE) is a novel non-invasive imaging technique which demonstrate tissue elasticity. Recent research evaluating the elasticity properties of normal and pathological tissues emphasize the diagnostic importance of this technique. Aims: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is characterized by menstrual irregularity, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic overgrowth, may cause infertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the elasticity of ovaries in patients with PCOS using SWE. Methods: 66 patients diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria (PCOS = group I) and 72 patients with non-PCOS (Control = group II), were included in the study. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the participants were recorded. Ovarian elasticity was assessed in all patients with SWE, and speed values were obtained from the ovaries. The elasticity of the ovaries was compared between the two groups. Results: While there were statistically significant differences between the groups in body mass index (BMI), right and left ovarian volumes, luteinizing hormone and testosterone levels (p<0.05), no significant differences were found between groups I and II in the velocity (for the right ovary 3.89±1.81 vs. 2.93±0.72, p=0.301; for the left ovary 2.88±0.65 vs. 2.95±0.80, p=0.577) and elastography (for the right ovary 36.62±17.78 vs. 36.79±14.32, p=0.3952; for the left ovary 36.56±14.15 vs. 36.26±15.10, p=0.903) values, respectively. Conclusion: We could not obtain different velocity and elastography values from the ovaries of the patients with PCOS using SWE. Therefore, further large-scale studies are needed to elucidate this issue.

AbstractThere are discrepancies in the literature regarding the course of central auditory processes (CAP) maturation in typically developing children and adolescents. The purpose of the study was to provide an overview of age – related improvement in CAP in Polish primary and secondary school students aged 7–16 years. 180 children/adolescents, subdivided into 9 age categories, and 20 adults (aged 18–24 years) performed the Dichotic Digit Test (DDT), Duration Pattern Test (DPT), Frequency Pattern Test (FPT), Gap Detection Test (GDT) and adaptive Speech-in-Noise (aSpN). The 12-year-olds was retested after w week. We found the age effects only for the DDT, DPT and FPT. In the right ear DDT the 7-year-olds performed more poorly than all groups ≥12. In the left ear DDT both 7- and 8-year-olds achieved less correct responses compared with the 13-, 14-, 15-year-olds and with the adults. The right ear advantage was greater in the 7-year-olds than in the 15-year-olds and adult group. At the age of 7 there was lower DPT and FPT scores than in all participants ≥13 whereas the 8-year-olds obtained less correct responses in the FPT than all age categories ≥12. Almost all groups (except for the 7-year-olds) performed better in the DPT than FPT. The test-retest reliability for all tests was satisfactory. The study demonstrated that different CAP have their own patterns of improvement with age and some of them are specific for the Polish population. The psychoacoustic battery may be useful in screening for CAP disorders in Poland.

Abstract Background An adenomyoma is a well circumscribed form of adenomyosis and can be located within the myometrium, in the endometrium as a polyp, or extrauterine with the last being the rarest presentation amongst the three. With the ongoing advancement in gynecological surgery, the use of electromechanical morcellators have made the removal of large and dense specimens possible with minimally invasive techniques. However, it has also caused an increase in complications which were previously rare. Whilst the tissue is being grinded within the abdominal cavity, residual tissue can spread and remain inside, allowing for implantation to occur and thereby giving rise to recurrence of uterine tissue as a new late postoperative complication. Case presentation A 45-year-old woman presented with worsening constipation and right iliac fossa pain. Her past surgical history consists of laparoscopic supra-cervical hysterectomy that was indicated due to uterine fibroids. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were done, which showed an irregular lobulated heterogeneous mass seen in the presacral space to the right, located on the right lateral aspect of the recto-sigmoid, measuring 4.5 × 4.3 × 4.3 cm in size. A transvaginal ultrasound revealed a cyst in the left ovary. The patient had a treatment course over several months that included Dienogest (progestin) and Goserelin (GnRH analogue) with add-back therapy. In line with the declining response to medications, the patient was advised for a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy. During the surgery, an additional lesion was found as a suspected fibroid and the left ovarian cyst was identified as pockets of peritoneal fluid which was sent for cytology. The surgical pathology report confirmed adenomyosis in both specimens, namely the right mass and the initially suspected fibroid. Conclusion In this case report, we showcase a rare occurrence of an extrauterine adenomyoma presenting two years post laparoscopic morcellation at hysterectomy. This poses questions regarding the benefits versus risks of power morcellation in laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Abstract Background Bochdalek hernia is a common congenital diaphragmatic defect that usually manifests with cardiopulmonary insufficiency in neonates. It is very rare in adults, and symptomatic cases are mostly left-sided. Diaphragmatic defects generally warrant immediate surgical intervention to reduce the risk of incarceration or strangulation of the displaced viscera. Case presentation A 47-year-old woman presented with dyspnea on exertion. Computed tomography revealed that a large part of the intestinal loop with superior mesenteric vessels and the right kidney were displaced into the right thoracic cavity. Preoperative three-dimensional (3D) simulation software visualized detailed anatomy of displaced viscera and the precise location and size of the diaphragmatic defect. She underwent elective surgery after concomitant pulmonary hypertension was stabilized preoperatively. The laparotomic approach was adopted. Malformation of the liver and the presence of intestinal malrotation were confirmed during the operation. The distal part of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, colon, and right kidney were reduced into the abdominal cavity consecutively. A large-sized oval defect was closed with monofilament polypropylene mesh. No complications occurred postoperatively. Conclusion Symptomatic right-sided Bochdalek hernia in adults is exceedingly rare and is frequently accompanied by various visceral anomalies. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate surgical repair are crucial to prevent possible incarceration or strangulation. The preoperative 3D simulation provided comprehensive information on anatomy and concomitant anomalies and helped surgeons plan the operation meticulously and perform procedures safely.

We studied auditory evoked responses to the apparent movement of a burst of noise in the horizontal plane. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were measured in three groups of participants: children in the age range from 9 to 12 years, young adults in the age range from 18 to 34 years, and seniors in the age range from 65 to 80 years. The topographic distribution of grand-averaged ERP activity was substantially greater over the right hemisphere in children and seniors but slightly greater over the left hemisphere in young adults. This finding may be related to age-related differences in the extent to which judgments of sound movement are based on displacement versus velocity information.

Mature cystic teratomas (MCTs) of the ovary represent 44% of ovarian neoplasmas. The surgical approach is important in young women especially for the cosmetic results. Nowadays most of the ovarian surgeries can be performed laparoscopically. An alternative between laparoscopy and laparotomy is the minilaparotomy (ML) which can be an interesting option, thanks to the small incision. We report a 39-year-old woman who was referred to our hospital with acute abdominal pain. In her past history the patient had an uncomplicated delivery. During pregnancy a 6 cm bilateral MCT was diagnosed and expectant management was followed. A left-sided ovarial torsion was postulated, and laparoscopic detorsion was performed. To avoid a rupture of the left MCT, the operation was interrupted. To remove the cyst, a ML was done two weeks later. A left-sided salpingo-oophorectomy was performed due to a large cyst including the entire ovary. On the other side, the right dermoid cyst was entirely removed. The advantage of a ML is not only shorter operating time with less learning curve compared to laparoscopy but also the possibility to extract the adnexal mass from the abdominal cavity with lower risk of rupture and in addition the possibility to preserve more ovarian tissue.

Fibroepithelial polyps are benign lesions that may appear in the vulvovaginal region. They usually occur in women of reproductive age and tend to grow up to 5 cm, but there are some rare cases in which they grow up to 20 cm. We report a case of a 22-year-old woman in the third trimester of her first pregnancy with spontaneous bleeding from a pedunculated mass measuring 15 cm in the widest diameter on the right side of the vulva. Features of this case are discussed as well as its implications, especially regarding the decision of labour. Due to the big size of the mass and its propensity to bleed, we decided to perform an elective caesarean section as well as its excision.
