It is shown how the enhancement of Compton scattering and allied QED processes in the f 5 1 lens focus of a high-power laser beam can be calculated, notwithstanding the inapplicability of the Volkov solution, by moving from the bound interaction picture to the first Born approximation in the total interaction picture.
