The evidence for the existence of systems that are dominated by electron-electron correlations is briefly reviewed, with particular attention being paid to (i) the processes of near-threshold electronimpact ionization and excitation of atoms and (ii) the structure of atomic doubly excited states and Feshbach resonances. New evidence is then presented for the existence of atomic resonances in which two excited electrons both have high val. es of the principal quantum number n (up to n = 8), and in which these two electrons reside on or near the Wannier ridge (i.e. with r1 ~ -rz).

AbstractHigh-lying doubly excited states of He and H− are studied and energies and intrinsic characteristics of their wave-functions are reported. Results for energies of 3Po and 1D doubly excited states associated with the hydrogenic thresholds up to N = 20 are presented and compared to available data from the literature. The classification of these doubly excited states by approximate quantum numbers is reexamined.

When an incident particle on a target gets attached to the target, the cross-section at that energy could be much larger compared to those at other energies. This is a short-lived state and decays by emitting an electron. Such states can also be formed by the absorption of a photon. Such states are below the higher thresholds and are called autoionization states, doubly excited states, or Feshbach resonances. There is also a possibility of such states to form above the thresholds. Then they are called shape resonances. Resonances are important in the diagnostic of solar and astrophysical plasmas. Some methods of calculating the resonance parameters are described and resonance parameters occurring in various systems are given.
