The contribution of the direct radiative capture of protons by 10 B and 24 Mg nuclei at low energies to the astrophysical S -factors in the reactions 10 B (p,γ)11 C and 24 Mg (p,γ)25 Al have been calculated within the R-matrix formalism by using empirical proton asymptotical normalization coefficients (ANC). The ANCs for bound proton configurations {10 B +p} and {24 Mg +p} were obtained from the analysis of the reactions (3 He , d). The ANCs were also estimated from the values of the neutron ANCs in the mirror nucleus 25 Mg following the suggestion that the neutron and the proton in the mirror states have equivalent nuclear potentials. It has been found that the S -factor for the reaction 10 B (p,γ)11 C extrapolated to zero energy contributes ~100 keV b to the radiative capture to the ground state of 11 C . For the reaction 24 Mg (p,γ)25 Al the value S(0) gives 58 keV b with a direct capture contribution of 41 keV b .

The Bassichis–Foldy model of a simple interacting boson is solved numerically and the results are compared with those obtained by the Bogoliubov approximation and by the Brueckner–Sawada t-matrix formalism. In the normal region, contrary to the widely held view, the Brueckner–Sawada approximation for the energy of the ground state is not reliable for strong, well-behaved, repulsive forces. The Bogoliubov approximation, on the other hand, remains valid for a wide range of values of the coupling constant. In the inverted region, the attractive force causes a population inversion in the levels of the system. For this case a modified Brueckner–Sawada approximation is developed. This method is applied to the calculation of the transition point and the energies of the ground and the first excited states of the system. Here most of the predictions of the modified Brueckner–Sawada approximation are quite accurate. By a simple change in the Bassichis–Foldy model it is shown that even, for two bosons there can be a phase transition. In this model, the derivative of the ground state energy with respect to the coupling constant is discontinuous at the transition point.

It discusses the crucial role played by the commutative properties of the transfer matrices, which lead to a functional equation for their eigenvalues. The exact free energy of the Ising model and its critical point can be identified by means of the lowest eigenvalue. The chapter covers Baxter's approach, the Yang–Baxter equation and its relation to the Boltzmann weights, the R-matrix, and discusses activity away from the critical point, the six-vertex model, as well as functional equations and symmetries.

The relativistic R-matrix method is used to calculate the total photoionization cross sections from the ground state 1s22s2 1S0 of Al X for photon energies ranges from the first ionization threshold to just above the eighth threshold of the residual ion Al XI. In this work, the relativistic distorted-wave method is employed to calculate the fine-structure energy levels and radial functions. The lowest eight level target states of Al XI are used in the photoionization calculations of Al X and should provide a reasonably complete database for practical application for photoionization cross section for Al X. The resonance energy levels and widths of 18 Rydberg series have been investigated.

We study the ground state of the boundary Izergin–Korepin model. The boundary Izergin–Korepin model is defined by the so-called R-matrix and K-matrix for [Formula: see text] which satisfy Yang–Baxter equation and boundary Yang–Baxter equation. The ground state associated with identity K-matrix [Formula: see text] was constructed by W.-L. Yang and Y.-Z. Zhang in earlier study. We construct the free field realization of the ground state associated with nontrivial diagonal K-matrix.

The possible application of reaction matrix theory to pion-nucleon processes is discussed. It is found that suitable boundary conditions can remove the effects of the nucleon-pion cloud, leading to the conventional R-matrix formalism. A simple dynamical channel.coupling scheme is proposed which permits full analysis of experiments.

The low energy neutron cross section of 135Xe is analyzed using both the R-matrix theory of Wigner and Eisenbud and the S-matrix theory of Humblet and Rosenfeld. Particular attention is given to the role played by the total resonance level width for it is well known that the R-matrix widths are energy dependent but the S-matrix widths are not. This different energy dependence leads to different analytic forms for the cross section and the n + 135Xe reaction offers what may be the simplest and best physical example for comparing these two forms. To the accuracy of the present data the difference is not detectable. The different energy dependence of the resonance widths is shown to be related to unitarity. A general proof that the R-matrix formalism is always unitary is given. The difficulty of satisfying unitarity in the S-matrix formalism is discussed and it is shown for the n + 135Xe reactions that this can lead to physically unacceptable solutions. This "lack of unitarity" does not, however, lead to any difficulties in fitting the present experimental data.
