At a wavelength of 6 cm the degree of linear polarization of the radiation from Jupiter is 0�076�0�002. The variation of the direction of polarization with longitude of the central meridian is consistent with the increased period of rotation determined by Komesaroff and McCulloch (1967). There is evidence of an asymmetricl beaming of the nonthermal radiation with longitude in addition to the latitude asymmetry that was detected previously by Roberts and Komesaroff (1965). The mean flux density normalized to a distance of 4�04 a.u. is 1O�7�0�2 f.u. The small nonthermal contribution (3'7 f.u.) is further evidence for a high frequency cutoff in the synchrotron radiation; the thermal component corresponds to a brightness temperature of about 250oK.

The time-mean skin friction of the laminar boundary layer on a flat plate which is fixed at zero incidence in a fluctuating stream is investigated analytically. Flow oscillation amplitude outside the boundary layer is assumed constant along the surface. First, the small velocity-amplitude case is treated, and approximate formulae are obtained in the extreme cases when the frequency is low and high. Next, the finite velocity-amplitude case is treated under the condition of high frequency, and it is found that the formula obtained for the small-amplitude and high-frequency case is also valid. These results show that the increase of the mean skin friction reduces with frequency and is ultimately inversely proportional to the square of frequency.The corresponding energy equation is also studied simultaneously under the condition of zero heat transfer between the fluid and the surface. It is confirmed that the time-mean surface temperature increases with frequency and tends to be proportional to the square root of frequency. Moreover, it is shown that the timemean recovery factor can be several times as large as that without flow oscillation.

The DSM-II and DSM-III both allow for multiple diagnoses. The DSM-III acknowledges that a patient may have multiple paraphilias but the true nature and extent of the multiplicity has only been documented recently. In order to study the degree of crossover between the various paraphiliac acts, a study of men who admitted to at least one paraphilia was conducted. A proportional index of multiple deviation was obtained. In addition, the mean number of admitted sexually deviant incidents per paraphilic category was computed as an estimate of the extent of deviant acts committed by this population. The results indicated that paraphiliacs tend to have multiple types of sexual aberrations as well as a high frequency of deviant acts per individual.

Of the 87 survivors of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation over a 10-year period, 67 participated in a follow-up study which included neurologic examination (n = 67), cognitive testing (n = 67), and audiologic assessment (n = 33). Matched control subjects for those older than 5 years were also evaluated. Outcome was defined as normal for cognitive scores ≥85 and normal neurologic examination results, suspect for cognitive scores 70 through 84 or nonfocal neurologic findings such as hypertonia/hypotonia, and abnormal for cognitive scores <70 or abnormal neurologic examination results. Of the 10 school-aged children studied, 9 were normal and there were no differences in mean cognitive scores between subjects and controls (IQ subjects = 109 ± 12 [SD], IQ controls = 107 ± 13). For preschoolers aged 2.7 through 4.11 years, the mean cognitive score was 91 ± 11 and 7 (70%) were normal. For infants 6 through 30 months, the mean cognitive score was 101 ± 22 and 27 (57%) were normal. A total of 7 children (21% of those studied) had abnormal audiologic assessments. Three children demonstrated mild high-frequency and 4 moderately severe high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss which was bilateral in 3 and of undetermined laterality in 1. Abnormal neurodevelopmental outcome was significantly associated with cerebral infarction and chronic lung disease. Outcome was not related to demographic or perinatal variables, illness severity prior to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or underlying diagnosis. Neurodevelopmental outcome among survivors of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in this series is consistent with previous reports of morbidity among neonates with severe respiratory failure treated conventionally.

Background and Aim: The quick speech in noise (Q-SIN) test shows the difficulty of spee­ch perception in noise by specifying signal to noise ratio (SNR) loss. Although the Persian version of Q-SIN has been already constructed, the high-frequency emphasis version of this test is not available. The present study aimed to construct six lists with high-frequency emphasis and implement it. Methods: We are going to prepare a high-frequ­ency emphasis version of Q-SIN and then test it on a small sample. First, researchers designed the relevant sentences; then experts examined their content and face validity. According to the criteria for developing the Q-SIN test, six lists with high-frequency emphasis were prepared. The test was examined on 26 (13 male and 13 female), 18−35 years old individuals with nor­mal hearing. To determine the test reliability, it was re-administered three weeks later with the same conditions. Results: Of 76 sentences prepared, 36 sentences received enough credit after determination of their content and face validity. These 36 senten­ces were used to make 6 lists. The mean value of SNR50 in the Persian language was obtained -4 dB. The mean values of SNR loss in 6 lists were -1.65, -1.8, -2.23, -1.61, -2.38 and -2.07. The results showed equivalency of lists 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. Examination of test-retest reliability indicated that all lists except the list 2were reliable. Conclusion: The lists of 1, 3, 4, and 6 are reli­able and equivalent and can be used in clinical application.

BatScope is a free application for processing acoustic high-frequency recordings of bats. It can import data, including meta-data information, from recorders such as Batlogger. The resulting content can be filtered visually as spectrograms or according to data fields and can be displayed. Automated processing includes detecting and extracting of echolocation calls, filtering noise, and measuring statistical parameters. Calls are classified to species by statistically matching to a reference database. A weighted list of classifiers helps to assign the most likely species per call. Classifiers were trained on 19 636 echolocation calls of 27 European bat species. When classifiers all agree on a species (76.4% of all cases), the mean correct classification rate reaches 95.7%. A sequence’s summary statistic indicates the most likely species occurring therein. Classifications can be verified visually, by filtering, and by acoustic comparison with reference calls. Procedures are available for, e.g., excluding dubious cutouts from the statistics and for accepting or overriding the proposed species assignment. Acoustic recordings can be exported and exchanged with other users. Finally, the verified results can be exported to spreadsheets for further analyses and reporting. We currently reprogram BatScope using Java, PostgreSQL, and R to reach a unified and portable software architecture.

This study was designed to investigate the frequency of musculoskeletal disorders among musicians in a professional-level symphony orchestra in Greece. The sample consisted of 147 musicians (97 men, 50 women) of the Athens and Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra. The mean age of the musicians was 38.97 years (range 24 to 67, SD 9.68), while the years of experience in the orchestra ranged from 1 to 35 (mean 14.2, SD 8.47). The data were collected with the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire, which records the frequency of musculoskeletal disorders. Our results showed a very high percentage (81.6%) of the musicians had suffered at least once, during their professional career, some kind of musculoskeletal disorder that was associated with pain or discomfort and was directly related to their profession. More than two-thirds of the musicians had also suffered a problem in the hand and neck areas during the last 12 months. Musculoskeletal disorders appeared to be related to gender, age, kind of instrument played, and duration of rehearsing/performing, along with previous experience. In summary, there is a high frequency of injury among professional-level musicians in Greece reported in our study, highlighting the obvious need to develop prevention programs.

This paper is a preliminary account of the calculation of the circularly polarized synchrotron radiation received from a distribution of electricallycharged particles confined to a thin shell in the magnetic field of a dipole. Calculations of the total radiation and the degree of linear polarization have previously been carried out, and these calculations are duplicated in part.
