Larval development of the saucer scallop Amusium balloti (Bernardi) (Mollusca : Pectinidae)

Larvae of A. balloti from Queensland and Western Australia were reared from ova with diameters ranging from 57 to 86�m. The straight-hinged veligers grew in shell length from 85 to 163 �m. Moderately protruding umbones developed 8 days after fertilization. The length (L) and height (H) relationship of larval shells was described by the allometric growth curve: H = 0.600L1.064. The provinculum of 15-day-old larval shells was undifferentiated and each valve had taxodontal teeth, at each end of the hinge line. Eye spots were present and common in pediveligers of 162-242 �m in length. Metamorphosis began 20 days after fertilization at 18-19� C when larvae were 178�m or longer. Settlement began on the 22nd day and lasted 5 days. Newly settled spat developed a byssal notch on the right valve, but attachment by byssal threads was never permanent. The length (L) and height (H) relationships of spat shells was described by the allometric growth equation H = 1.782L0.857. General appearance of A. balloti larvae was comparable to that of other pectinids. Statistical comparison of height-length relationships of the larval shells of A. balloti and Chlamys asperrimus showed larvae of A. balloti to be the more oblong at lengths greater than 128�m. The most significant characteristic of A. balloti spat shells was the formation of rounded auricles at the end of the hinge-line of each valve.

Planktotrophic larvae of C. asperrimus were reared from zygotes with a mean diameter of 61.5�m. The smallest straight-hinged larval shell was 80�m long, and slightly protruding umbones were formed 6 days after fertilization. The length (L) and height (H) relationship of larval shells was described by the allometric growth curve H = 0.309 L1 203. Provincular structure of 13-day-old larval shells was simple and there were nine taxodontal teeth per valve, four at one end of the hinge line and five at the other end. Eye spots were conspicuous and common in pediveligers 160-220�m long. Metamorphosis occurred 20-22 days after fertilization at 17-18�C when larvae were 190�m or longer. Larvae settled on monofilament nylon collectors. Newly settled juveniles developed a distinctive byssal notch on the right valve but attachment by byssal threads was never permanent. The small size of eggs and early larvae and allometric growth of prodissoconch II shells are the most significant characteristics distinguishing the larval stages of C. asperrimus from other pectinids in Tasmanian waters.

The stenophagous ascoglossan (=sacoglossan) opisthobranch Elysia viridis has long been a model organism for the study of endosymbiosis or kleptoplasty as well as one of the few herbivores to consume the introduced green macroalga Codium fragile on European shores. Larval and post-larval dynamics of the ascoglossan were investigated. Planktotrophic larvae of E. viridis grew at 5–10 μm d−1 (shell length) at 15°C on a unicellular algal diet (the cryptophyte Rhodomonas baltica); larvae became competent one month post-hatching. Effective feeding and chloroplast acquisition typically started within 2–3 d of metamorphosis. Slugs grew about 8 mm in the first month of post-larval life. During this period, juveniles held in the light did not grow faster or survive better than conspecifics held in the dark; thus, functional kleptoplasty did not occur during first three weeks of benthic life. While larval growth rates and the nature of metamorphic cues are consistent with those of many other opisthobranch species with planktotrophic larvae, measures of post-larval growth—particularly as it pertains to kleptoplasty—is a new contribution to opisthobranch biology.

Abstract A 54-year-old man with a right hemiparesis was found to have an intrasellar intercarotid communicating artery associated with agenesis of the right internal carotid artery. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies demonstrated the spatial relationship of the anomalous artery to the surrounding structures, thus suggesting an embryonic enlargement of the capsular artery as a source of this anomalous artery.

AbstractHans Kelsen is known both as a legal theorist and as an international lawyer. This article shows that his theory of international law is an integral part of the Kelsenian Pure Theory of Law. Two areas of international law are analysed: first, Kelsen's coercive order paradigm and its relationship to the bellum iustum doctrine; second, the Kelsenian notion of the unity of all law vis-à-vis theories of the relationship of international and municipal law. In a second step, the results of Kelsenian general legal theory of the late period – as interpreted and developed by the present author – are reapplied to selected doctrines of international law. Thus is the coercive order paradigm resolved, the unity of law dissolved, and the UN Charter reinterpreted to show that the concretization of norms as positive international law cannot be unmade by a scholarship usurping the right to make law.

Patient as service users have right and obligations to be hospitalized and patients also have the right to medical information in receiving medical practice services. This study aims to determine the relationship between patient attitudes towards the rights and obligations of being hospitalized in the hospital Pekanbaru Medical Center (PMC). This research method using observational analytic method with cross sectional design. The total sample used in this study 107 sample were taken as simpel random sampling. Chi square test is used to determine the relationship between variables. The data were processed using SPSS statistical software and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyzes. Of the result obtained of the study namely the relationship between patient attitude to the rights and obligations of patient with chi-suare obtained pvalue 0.016 (<0,05), the relationship of attitude patients to the rights and obligations of choosing a doctor and class of patient care with chi-square obtained pvalue 0,070 (<0,05), the relationship of patient attitudes to the right and obligations of confidentiality of disease by inpatient medical staff with chi-square obtained pvalue 0,000 (<0,05), the relationship of patient attitudes to the rights and obligations of consent to the patient treatment with chi-square obtained pvalue 0,000 (<0,05), the relationship of patient attitudes to the right and obligation of patient safety with chi-square obtained pvalue 0,000 (<0,05), the relationship between patient attitudes towards the right and obligations of patient safety with chi-square obtained pvalue 0,000 (<0,05). The speed-torque relationship of the right knee extensor muscle group was investigated in eight untrained subjects (28 +/- 2 yr old). Torque was measured at a specific knee angle during isokinetic concentric or eccentric actions at nine angular velocities (0.17-3.66 rad/s) and during isometric actions. Activation was by "maximal" voluntary effort or by transcutaneous tetanic electrical stimulation that induced an isometric torque equal to 60% (STIM 1) or 45% (STIM 2) of the voluntary isometric value. Torque increased (P less than 0.05) to 1.4 times isometric as the speed of eccentric actions increased to 1.57 rad/s for STIM 1 and STIM 2. Thereafter, increases in eccentric speed did not further increase torque. Torque did not increase (P greater than 0.05) above isometric for voluntary eccentric actions. As the speed of concentric actions increased from 0.00 to 3.66 rad/s, torque decreased (P less than 0.05) more (P less than 0.05) for both STIM 1 and STIM 2 (two-thirds) than for voluntary activation (one-half). As a result of these responses, torque changed three times as much (P less than 0.05) across speeds of concentric and eccentric actions with artificial (3.4-fold) than voluntary (1.1-fold) activation. The results indicate that with artificial activation the normalized speed-torque relationship of the knee extensors in situ is remarkably similar to that of isolated muscle. The relationship for voluntary activation, in contrast, suggests that the ability of the central nervous system to activate the knee extensors during maximal efforts depends on the speed and type of muscle action performed.

Accurate knowledge of anatomical variations of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) provides information to prevent inadvertent intraoperative injury and ultimately guide best clinical and surgical practices. The present study aims to assess the potential anatomical variability of RLN pertaining to its course, branching pattern, and relationship to the inferior thyroid artery, which makes it vulnerable during surgical procedures of the neck. Fifty-five formalin-fixed cadavers were carefully dissected and examined, with the course of the RLN carefully evaluated and documented bilaterally. Our findings indicate that extra-laryngeal branches coming off the RLN on both the right and left side innervate the esophagus, trachea, and mainly intrinsic laryngeal muscles. On the right side, 89.1% of the cadavers demonstrated 2–5 extra-laryngeal branches. On the left, 74.6% of the cadavers demonstrated 2–3 extra-laryngeal branches. In relation to the inferior thyroid artery (ITA), 67.9% of right RLNs were located anteriorly, while 32.1% were located posteriorly. On the other hand, 32.1% of left RLNs were anterior to the ITA, while 67.9% were related posteriorly. On both sides, 3–5% of RLN crossed in between the branches of the ITA. Anatomical consideration of the variations in the course, branching pattern, and relationship of the RLNs is essential to minimize complications associated with surgical procedures of the neck, especially thyroidectomy and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery. The information gained in this study emphasizes the need to preferentially utilize left-sided approaches for ACDF surgery whenever possible.
