A study was carried out on the food of the squid N. gouldi, based on 1277 individuals collected by Japanese vessels jigging in Bass Strait from November 1979 to April 1980. Most of the food consisted of crustaceans, fish and cephalopods, with crustaceans being more common in smaller animals and cephalopods in larger ones. The crustaceans, which included several benthic species, were more common in the diet at night than by day. Cannibalism by N. gouldi did not appear to increase appreciably after the animals were brought aboard and laid together in the collecting troughs. By frequency of occurrence, the contributions to the diet, averaged over all sizes sampled, were fish 37%, crustaceans 36%, and squid 26%; but in terms of biomass fish contributed more. From the size of the beaks of squid taken, it could be shown that the mantle length of these prey was usually not more than half that of the predator. N. gouldi feeds primarily at night, probably moving up from the bottom into the water column. Larger specimens, both male and female, were less likely to contain food in the stomach than smaller ones, and possible explanations are considered. There are some indications about the timing of spawning in 1979-1980, from records of the size and sexual maturation of the animals sampled.

The current paper aimed to investigate taboo language using animal names in Facebook Messenger in the Jordanian setting based on the context where it appeared. A total of (100) male and female university students answered a questionnaire devised to examine the way how students use taboo language. It was noticed that "pig" recorded the highest frequency of occurrence comprising (11.59) of the total number of the taboo words followed by "dog" and "bitch". Important differences were observed in the frequency and use of taboo words by male (68. 8 %) and female (32.2%) students. The study explained the reasons why such words were deemed taboo in the Jordanian setting taking into consideration the socio-cultural and religious norms of the society. The study also concluded that taboo language was used to express different themes such as humor, relaxation, anger and abuse. Abstract Human adipose tissue samples obtained during autopsies in 6 Canadian Great Lakes municipalities were analyzed for chlorobenzenes, polychlorobiphenyls, and organohalogen pesticide residues. The frequency of occurrence and the range and mean for 2JJ organohalogen residues are reported for male and female donors in each municipality. Overall mean residue values in females were significantly higher than those in males for hexachlorobenzen;, β-HCH, p,p'- DDE,»,/» -DDD + o,p'-DDT, and p,p'-DDT. The means and ranges of residue values were similar to those reported in previous Canadian surveys.

The state of development of the internal reproductive organs of male and female Oebalus poecilus (Dallas) as well as the body fat amount in the abdominal cavity during hibernation, of individuals sampled in bamboo litter in Eldorado do Sul (30º02'S and 51°23'W), RS, Brazil was investigated. Females and males showed the abdominal cavity filled with body fat in the beginning of the hibernation phase. The decrease in fat reserve level occurred from August on for males and from October on for females. Ovaries and testis doubled in length and tripled in width from immature to the reproductive phase. Male sexual maturation occurred in the hibernation sites while for females it occurred later on outside of the sites. Reproductive organ immaturity and abdominal body fat hypertrophy characterized the diapause of O. poecilus.

The reproductive toxicity of trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds was investigated in male and female mice exposed to 1000 ppm chromium chloride and potassium dichromate via their mother during gestational and lactational periods. Fertility was reduced in male offspring exposed to either trivalent or hexavalent chromium compounds. Body weights and weights of testes, seminal vesicles and preputial glands were reduced in trivalent-exposed male offspring. The exposure of female mice offspring to trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds delayed sexual maturation. Fertility was reduced in female offspring exposed to either trivalent or hexavalent chromium compounds. The exposure of female mice to hexavalent chromium compound reduced the number of implantations and viable fetuses respectively. Body weight and weights of ovaries and uteri were reduced in trivalent-exposed female offspring. The results indicate that under our experimental conditions, the exposure of male and female mice offspring to either trivalent or hexavalent chromium compounds during gestational and lactational periods impair reproductive functions and fertility in adulthood.

The reproductive strategies of male and female Loligo forbesi Steenstrup, 1856 were investigated from samples obtained from commercial catches and research cruises in Irish waters. In females maturity increased with size, but in males two modes in the size at maturity were identified, with approximately 40% mature at small size (180–200 mm mantle length), and the remainder mature at >250 mm mantle length. The difference in estimated age of the two modes of mature males was small, so size differences were probably due to different growth rates. Growth and maturation proceeded together in both sexes over much of the life-cycle. The effect of maturation on relative growth of somatic tissues was examined using analysis of covariance and multivariate regressions. In males there was a significant decline in total mass, and in mass of mantle, head and viscera, relative to mantle length with maturation. In females total mass was not significantly affected by maturation, but relative masses of head, mantle and viscera declined with maturation, indicating that energy was diverted from somatic growth to gonad production. Potential fecundity estimates were obtained by counting eggs and ova in the oviduct and ovary of mature females and were in the range 2500 to 10,500 (mean 5800). Fecundity was positively related to mantle length. The ovaries of mature females contained a range of egg sizes and developmental stages, indicating that spawning probably occurs intermittently.

Duas Bocas is a small water supply reservoir (0.51 km²) located in a forested area (Duas Bocas Biological Reserve) (20º18'S and 40º28'W). Phytoplankton community was investigated by samplings weekly taken in the dry (July, 1998) and rainy (March 1999) seasons, at surface, euphotic/afotic boundary, and at the bottom of the water column. A total of 76 taxa was identified with the majority of Chlorophyceae (Chlorococcales) (37.3 %), Conjugatophyceae (Desmidiales) (26.7 %), and Cyanobacteria (Chroococcales, Nostocales e Oscillatoriales) (22.7 %). In addition, Euglenophyceae, Dinophyceae, Cryptophyceae, and Chrysophyceae totalized 13.3 %. The predominant genera were Staurastrum, Staurodesmus, Cosmarium, Desmodesmus, Ankistrodesmus, and Monoraphidium. Regarding to the frequency of occurrence, most of the rare and constant species were belong to Chlorophyceae (Chlorococcales) and Conjugatophyceae (Desmidiales) and Cyanobacteria, respectively. According to the literature, most of the species presented cosmopolitan distribution. Among the identified taxa, 44 species (57.9 %) are the first citation for the State of Espírito Santo.
