Composition of eggs in relation to embryonic development and female size in giant crabs [Pseudocarcinus gigas (Lamarck)]

The size and composition of eggs from 22 giant crabs (Pseudocarcinus gigas) were monitored over 165 days to determine trends through embryogenesis. Egg composition was most stable during the early stages of embryogenesis so additional sampling (n=143) was conducted during this period to assess the effect of female size, sampling location (east and west Tasmania)and successive broods between moults, on egg composition. During embryogenesis, eggs increased in diameter and moisture content while organic dry mass declined. Total carotenoid and lipid content per egg did not change significantly, whereas protein declined (as ash-free dry mass per egg). This indicates that protein was used preferentially to lipid, which may be an adaptation to the deeper water habitat of P. gigas. Females with heavy and intermediate carapace wear were considered more likely to have produced previous clutches and they produced eggs with significantly less carotenoid. The eggs of larger females contained significantly more water, less protein and less carotenoid, whereas there was no effect on total lipid (P<0. 05). Although the effects of female size on egg composition were significant, the magnitude of the effect was small (highest for carotenoid, r2=0. 17). Consequently, it is unlikely that larval viability is affected, or that larger females contribute more to recruitment than predicted by fecundity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of Campomanesia adamantium seeds to desiccation by drying in activated silica gel (fast) and under laboratory conditions (slow). To assess the sensitivity of the seeds to desiccation, we used drying with silica gel and drying under laboratory conditions (25 °C), in order to obtain seeds with moisture content of 45, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10 and 5%. The physiological potential of the seeds after desiccation was evaluated by measuring primary root protrusion, percentage of normal seedlings, germination seed index, seedling length, total seedling dry mass, electrical conductivity and DNA and RNA integrities. The C. adamantium seeds were sensitive to desiccation and to a reduction in moisture content to 21.1% or less by desiccation using silica gel, and to 17.2% or less by desiccation under laboratory conditions; impairment of the physiological potential of the seeds was observed at these low moisture content levels. The integrity of the seed genomic DNA was not affected after drying seeds in the two methods. However, drying in silica gel to 4.5% moisture content and drying under laboratory conditions to 5.4% moisture content resulted in the loss of seed RNA integrity.

Germinability and the content of soluble carbohydrates were analysed in cereal seed (winter rye, cv. Warko; spring wheat, cv. Santa; hexaploid winter triticale, cv. Fidelio and cv. Woltario). Seed moisture content (mc) was equilibrated over silica gel to 0.08 g H<sub>2</sub>O/g dry mass and stored in a desiccator at 20<sup>o</sup>C for up to 205 weeks or were equilibrated to mc 0.06, 0.08 or 0.10 g H<sub>2</sub>O/g dm and subjected to artificial aging at 35<sup>o</sup>C in air-tight laminated aluminium foil packages for 205 weeks. It was shown that the rate of seed aging depended on the species and seed moisture content. The fastest decrease of germinability upon storage was observed in seed with the highest moisture level. Complete germinability loss for winter rye, winter triticale cv. Fidelio, winter triticale cv. Woltario and spring wheat seed with mc 0.10 g H<sub>2</sub>O/g dm<sup>3</sup> occurred after 81, 81, 101 and 133 weeks, respectively. Fructose, glucose, galactose, myo-inositol, sucrose, galactinol, raffinose, stachyose and verbascose were the main soluble carbohydrates found in the seed. The obtained data on the contents of specific sugars and the composition of soluble sugars fraction in seed of rye, wheat and triticale did not corroborate any profound effect of reducing sugars, sucrose and oligosaccharides on seed longevity.

Objective: Lipids are secreted into milk as bilayer-coated structures: milk lipid globules (MLGs). Adipophilin (ADRP) and perilipin 3 (TIP47) are associated with MLGs in human breast milk; however, the role of these proteins in milk lipid secretion is not fully understood. The aim of the study was to investigate levels of ADRP, TIP47 and total lipid content in human breast milk, their mutual correlations and dynamics during lactation. Research Methods &amp; Procedures: Milk samples from 22 healthy lactating women (Caucasian, Central European) were collected at five time points during lactation (1&ndash;3, 12&ndash;14, 29&ndash;30, 88&ndash;90 and 178&ndash;180 days postpartum). Mass spectrometry-based method was used for quantification of ADRP and TIP47 in the samples. The gravimetric method was used to determine milk total lipid content. Results: We observed distinctive trends in ADRP, TIP47 levels and lipid content in human breast milk during the first 6 months of lactation. We also found a significant association between lipid content and ADRP, lipid content and TIP47, and ADRP and TIP47 concentrations in breast milk at all sampling points. Moreover, we derived an equation for estimating the mean lipid content of milk based on ADRP concentration in human breast milk. Conclusions: A mass spectrometry-based method was developed for quantifying ADRP and TIP47 in human breast milk. Strong mutual correlations were found between ADRP, TIP47 and total lipid content in human breast milk.

The methodology in Latvia forest industry provide to determine the quality of energy chips only in long- term storage places before selling. Due to the lack of hard empirical data about the quality parameters of energy chips in different phases of manufacturing process, this research paper consists of: - the identification and analyses of the factors that influenced the values of energy chips quality features such as: bulk density, moisture content, ash content, higher and lower heating value according to actual moisture content and per dry mass of the chips; - the methodology for determination the quality parameters of energy chips by analysis the wood moisture content and by choice the method of the manufacturing of energy chips.

1. Weight, moisture content, and mineral content of freshly laid and of fully developed eggs of Bacillus libanicus (Uv.) were studied. During development of the embryo the egg-shell loses 19 per cent, of its initial mineral content, while the weight of mineral materials in the embryo increases correspondingly. 2. These changes can be explained only as resulting from transfer of minerals from the shell to the embryo. The mineral materials are derived from the calcium carbonate layer of the shell, which, owing to this loss, becomes thinner during embryonic development. 3. It is suggested that the mechanism of this transfer is based on the production of bicarbonate by the reaction of water and carbon dioxide, given off by the embryo, with the calcium carbonate of the shell. 4. Experimental calcium deficiency in the egg-shells results in a marked lowering of the viability of the embryos; although embryogenesis may sometimes proceed till the hatching stage, the few emerging nymphs survive only for a short time. 5. The possible occurrence of mineral transfer in other phasmid eggs is indicated.
