The composition of the diet of a landlocked form of the normally catadromous stream-dwelling fish Galaxias maculatus from Lake Modewarre in south-western Victoria was studied using a new method of stomach contents analysis based on the principle of ranking. The overall diet of this landlocked fish was found to consist mainly of amphipods, chironomid larvae, and copepods (basic food types), with other groups of crustaceans (cladocerans and ostracods) and insects (trichopteran and zygopteran larvae) being of lesser importance (secondary food types), and a few other incidental food types occurring in only small amounts. The diet of this landlocked form thus consists mainly of crustaceans, in contrast to that of the stream-dwelling form which comprises mainly insects. There was a change in the pattern of feeding in the landlocked fish with growth, the smaller fish eating more of the smaller planktonic and the larger fish more of the larger littoral-benthic food organisms. Amphipods were the dominant food type during all seasons except autumn, when copepods were dominant. Cladocerans were also important when they bloomed in summer, and chironomid adults when they swarmed in autumn. Selection coefficients indicated that those food types which were dominant in the diet were actively selected and those that were unimportant were avoided. This landlocked galaxiid was found to share most of the available food resources with the other four fish species found in the lake, and can be broadly classified as a euryphagic carnivore.

Following a brief outline of the systematic relationships of a number of species comprising the Galaxias maculatus species complex, the morphology of the "landlocked jollytail", a lacustrine galaxiid from Lake Modewarre (south-western Victoria), is described and compared with that of the normally catadromous stream dwelling species G. maculatus and a number of other closely related forms belonging to this complex. The probable systematic status of the landlocked jollytail and its relationship to the other forms included in the G. maculatus species complex are then discussed in the light of both the above morphological evidence, and ecological and behavioural evidence from a previous study of the life cycle and discussion of the probable origin of this lacustrine form. The conclusion is drawn that the landlocked jollytail should probably be regarded as no more than an isolated "ecological race" of the normally catadromous stream-dwelling species, G. maculatus.


During the last few years of his life Prof. Simon Newcomb was keenly interested in the problem of periodicities, and devised a new method for their investigation. This method is explained, and to some extent applied, in a paper entitled "A Search for Fluctuations in the Sun's Thermal Radiation through their Influence on Terrestrial Temperature." The importance of the question justifies a critical examination of the relationship of the older methods to that of Newcomb, and though I do not agree with his contention that his process gives us more than can be obtained from Fourier's analysis, it has the advantage of great simplicity in its numerical work, and should prove useful in a certain, though I am afraid, very limited field. Let f ( t ) represent a function of a variable which we may take to be the time, and let the average value of the function be zero. Newcomb examines the sum of the series f ( t 1 ) f ( t 1 + τ) + f ( t 2 ) f ( t 2 + τ) + f ( t 3 ) f ( t 3 + τ) + ..., where t 1 , t 2 , etc., are definite values of the variable which are taken to lie at equal distances from each other. If the function be periodic so as to repeat itself after an interval τ, the products are all squares and each term is positive. If, on the other hand, the periodic time be 2τ, each product will be negative and the sum itself therefore negative. It is easy to see that if τ be varied continuously the sum of the series passes through maxima and minima, and the maxima will indicated the periodic time, or any of its multiples.

The paper describes a new method of body equilibrium evaluation applied for different human subjects, the principal aim being to demonstrate to what extent any locomotory diseases could influence the body stability and equilibrium. The research refers to identify some persons with different locomotory diseases and to find both the influence on equilibrium and stability and if possible to improve them. Our research stage, synthesized in this paper, explains the body equilibrium evaluation in orthostatic posture done for different subjects, aged between 20 and 40 years. A number of 10 relevant persons were considered to be evaluated, 2 of them having some locomotory diseases. The first person presents any neuro-motor stability problems in case of long standing case. The other person has both Achilles tendons torn and operated. All subjects were tested in orthostatic posture, in 3 distinct positions, using a Kistler force plate. The experiments referred to the body mass center (COM) displacement in sagittal and lateral planes, representing an interesting characteristic for its equilibrium. It was shown that the person with diseases affecting stability presented a loss of equilibrium when standing for 10-20 seconds, i.e. higher COM displacements in both planes reported to the other tested subjects.

It is possible to replace k2 in a 4th-order Runge-Kutta for mula (also Nth-order 3 ≤ N ≤ 5) by a linear combination of k1 and the ki's in the last step, using the same procedure for computing the other ki's and y as in the standard R-K method. The advantages of the new method are: It re quires one less derivative evaluation, provides an error estimate at each step, gives more accurate results, and needs a minor change to switch to the RK to obtain the starting values. Experimental results are shown in verification of the for mula.

The determination of the degree of twist in a folded or ply thread composed of two or more strands is an easy matter. It is merely necessary to stretch the thread between two clamps, one being fixed and the other forming the end of a bar which can be rotated about its axis. A counter is attached to indicate the number of rotations. Rotating the thread in the opposite direction to its twist ultimately brings the singles parallel to each other. This point is easily observed. If we apply this method to single yarns we are at once confronted with the difficulty that the fibres constituting the yarn cannot be reduced to exact parallelism with each other.

A total of 281 specimens of freshwater armored ornamental fish species (Leporacanthicus galaxias, Lasiancistrus saetiger, Cochliodon sp., Hypostomus sp., Pseudacanthicus spinosus, Ancistrus sp. and Rineloricaria cf. lanceolata) were captured at the hydrological basin of Guamá River, Pará, Brazil. The infection by Trypanosoma spp. was inspected. The morphological and morphometric characterization of the parasites and the hematological parameters were determined. Leporacanthicus galaxias and Pseudacanthicus spinosus presented 100% infection prevalence, and the other species showed a variable prevalence of infection. The parasites showed clearly different morphotypes and dimensions, and probably belong to different species. The hematological response to the infection varied with the host. Cochliodon sp. showed no differences between infected and not infected fish. In other species several modifications on some hematological parameters were found, but apparently without causing disease. It is emphasized the possibility of introduction of the parasites in new environments due to the artificial movements of these ornamental fish.

In the past 30 years many hundreds of archaeologic samples have been dated by radiocarbon laboratories. Yet, one cannot say that 14C dating is fully integrated into archaeology. For many archaeologists, a 14C date is an outside expertise, for which they are grateful, when it provides the answer to an otherwise insoluble chronologic problem and when it falls within the expected time range. But if a 14C date contradicts other chronologic evidence, they often find the ‘solution’ inexplicable. Some archaeologists are so impressed by the new method, that they neglect the other evidence; others simply reject problematic 14C dates as archaeologically unacceptable. Frequently, excavation reports are provided with an appendix listing the relevant 14C dates with little or no discussion of their implication. It is rare, indeed, to see in archaeologic reports a careful weighing of the various types of chronologic evidence. Yet, this is precisely what the archaeologist is accustomed to do with the evidence from his traditional methods for building up a chronology: typology and stratigraphy. Why should he not be able to include radiocarbon dates in the same way in his considerations?

This article will discuss hermeneutics as a new method of interpreting the Qur'an.The use of hermeneutics is a new thingin the world of interpretation. Some support and some reject it.The results of this study show that the use of hermeneutics in interpreting the Qur’an must be careful.In addition, This science should be placed as a complement, not as a subdivision of the science of interpretation. On the other hand, hermeneutics paves the way to contextualize the scriptures, so that they can dialogue in different spaces and times, as apologically desirable and held by many religious groups to their respective scriptures.

This study was conducted to investigate the stomach contents of two commercially important fish species (Tilapia zilli and Oreochromis nilocticus)  from Wanzun River, Northcentral Nigeria using frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods between January to April 2019. Fish samples were collected monthly with help of Fishermen using various fishing nets and traps. One hundred (100) individual fish of each species were collected and their stomach contents were examined. The results obtained expressed in mean percentage indicated that out of the one hundred (100) individual fish of each species examined,Twelve (12%) fish had an empty stomach contents in Tilapia zilli, and out of the 100 samples examined, Seventeen (17%) fish had an empty stomach content in Oreochromis nilocticus. The stomach contents of both Tilapia zilli and Oreochromis nilocticus consist of detritus, insects, fish remains. Algae/protozoans plant materials and molluscs. Both fish species are omnivorous feeders and occupy the same ecological niche.The study reveals the importance of algae, fish, insects and plant materials as food for fishes and they form important part in the diet of the species examined.

The word hermeneutics derives from the Greek verb, hermeneuin. It means to interpret and to translate. Hermeneutics is divided into three kinds: the theory of hermeneutics, the philosophy hermeneutics, and the critical hermenmtics. Hasan Hanfi is known as the first scholar who introduces hermeneutics in the Islamic World through his work dealing with the new method of interpretation. Nashr Hamid Abu-Zaid is another figure who has much studied hermenmtics in the classical interpretation. Ali Harb is a figure who also much involved in discussing the critism of text even though he does not fully concern on literature or art, but on the thoughts. Muslim thinker who has similar view with Ali Harab in seeing that the backwardness of Arab-Islam from the West is caused by the system of thoguht used by Arah-Muslim not able to come out of obstinary and taqlid is Muhammad Syahmr. On the other side, ones who refuse hermeneutics argue that since its heginning, hermeneutics must be studied suspiciously because it is not derived from the Islamic tradition, but from the unbeliever scientific tradition, Jews and Chrtians in which they use it as a method to interpret the Bible. Practically, in interpreting the Qur'an, hermeneutics even strengthens something, namely the hegemony of scularism-liberalism in the Muslim World that Muslims must actually destroy.
