The chlorophyll a in samples from five stations in Lake Macquarie was determined over the period July 1955 to November 1956. The mean surface value for the four stations within the lake proper was 1.26 mg/m³. The vertical profile at one station was studied and the mean of these profile values was 1.23 mg/m³. Throughout the period of the survey chlorophyll concentrations in the lake varied from 0.1 to 4.0 mg/m³. The lowest values were found in the late winter and early summer (November) and the peaks during spring and autumn. The chlorophyll concentration in the surface waters of Lake Macquarie was shown to be significantly higher than that of the marine water entering the lake, but lower than that of a comparison station in the Hawkesbury River. One series of light penetration measurements made in December 1956 showed that all the water in the lake, and all but one section of Dora Creek, lay within the euphotic zone.

Our data support empirical models indicating that algal productivity is low relative to total phosphorus (TP) levels in prairie lakes with high sulphate concentrations. Mean chlorophyll accounted for 91.1% of the variance in euphotic zone primary production (ΣA) in Humboldt Lake (total dissolved solids (TDS) = 3.3 g∙L−1; Zmax = 6 m), while TP, total dissolved phosphorus, and water temperature accounted for 82.7% of ΣA variance in Redberry Lake (TDS = 20.9 g∙L−1; Zmax = 17 m). The relative importance of these variables to ΣA resulted from biological, chemical, and physical differences of these lakes. Light usually penetrated to the bottom of Redberry Lake due to a mean euphotic zone (Zeu) chlorophyll of 1.7 mg∙m−3, while Humboldt Lake's mean Zeu was 3.4 m with a mean chlorophyll concentration of 62.6 mg∙m−3. Chlorophyll was the dominant factor correlated with light penetration in Humboldt Lake (r2 = 0.65) but not in Redberry Lake. Photosynthetic capacity was correlated (r2 = 0.72) with water temperature only in Redberry Lake. The mean ΣA was 57.1 and 230.2 mg C∙m−2∙h−1 for Redberry and Humboldt lakes, respectively.

AbstractGlobal warming has significantly altered the distribution and productivity of vegetation owing to shifts in plant functional traits. However, chlorophyll adaptations—good representative of plant production—in grasslands have not been investigated on a large scale, hindering ecological predictions of climate change. Three grassland transects with a natural temperature gradient were designed in the Tibetan, Mongolian, and Loess Plateau to describe the changes in chlorophyll under different warming scenarios for 475 species. In the three plateaus, variations and distributions of species chlorophyll concentration and composition were compared. The results showed that the means of chlorophyll concentration and composition (chlorophyll a/b) increased with the mean annual temperature. Still, their distributions shifted in opposite manners: chlorophyll concentration was distributed in a broader but more differential manner, while chlorophyll composition was distributed in a narrower but more uniform manner. Compared to chlorophyll concentration, chlorophyll composition was more conservative, with a slight shift in distribution. At the regional level, the chlorophyll concentration and composition depend on the limitations of the local climate or resources. The results implied that warming might drive shifts in grassland chlorophyll distribution mainly by alternations in species composition. Large-scale chlorophyll investigations will be useful for developing prediction techniques.

Observations on the pattern of reproduction in Sminthopsis longicaudata, at present considered to be an endangered species, are presented. S. longicaudata is polyoestrous and in the laboratory females are in breeding condition from late winter (August) to early summer (December). They enter oestrus up to four times during the breeding season. Two litters were born 17 and 19 days post-mating, but the gestation period may be less than 15 days. The mean length of the oestrous cycle is 34.4 days. Both males and females may be able to breed in more than one season.

Consecutive weekly observations on the lymphocyte and monocyte counts of the peripheral blood were made on 5 groups of normal rabbits, a total of 45 animals, during a period of 20 months from October, 1927 to July, 1929. Individual groups were examined 8 to 35 weeks. The results are analyzed on the basis of the mean group values of each week. In the case of the 4 groups followed 13 to 35 weeks, there was a general tendency for the lymphocyte mean values to become increased; with the group observed 8 weeks, the level of mean values showed little change. The general trend of the monocyte mean values was also in the direction of higher levels but it was less pronounced than that of the lymphocytes. The period of greatest irregularity in the mean values of the lymphocytes was in the late winter and spring months of both years. With the monocytes, periods of fluctuating values occurred in the fall of 1927, the spring and early summer of 1928, and in the late winter, spring, and early summer of 1929. There was a certain degree of parallelism in the case of two groups examined during the same months with respect to the direction and time of occurrence of a change in the level of lymphocyte and monocyte mean values. The general levels of lymphocyte and monocyte mean values in the groups examined during 1927–28 were higher than in the groups of 1928–29. The results based upon the trends of mean group values obtained from consecutive weekly observations showed no evidence of a consistent numerical relationship between lymphocytes and monocytes.

Sediment traps were used to measure particle-settling fluxes in serial moorings offshore of Great Whale River (Hudson Bay), both under the late winter sea-ice cover and during and after breakup. Before breakup, the settling fluxes ranged between 0.25 and 2 g cm−2 100 a−1, increasing from April to May in response to the progressively larger under-ice algal biomass. Fluxes also increased with depth. During and after breakup, including the early summer period of peak runoff, sedimentation rates increased to values of up to 33 g cm−2100 a−1. These fluxes agree with the mean sedimentation rate determined from 210Pb activities in the underlying sediments.

The establishment, staffing and structure and observations made in the first year of the existence of coronary care in an intensive care unit in a general hospital are recorded. Two hundred and twenty eight patients were admitted during the year in whom the diagnosis of myocardial infarction was confirmed. There were 29 deaths in the unit and 14 deaths occurred in the wards of the hospital after discharge from the unit. 49.1 per cent of the patients were admitted within 4 hours of the onset of symptoms and the mean duration of stay in the unit was 86.5 hours. The type of arrhythmia detected in the unit, and the treatment given to the patients both before and after admission to the intensive care unit are described.

Surgical process re-engineering is a methodology where the entire surgical process is systematically analysed and re-designed. The process starts with mapping of the current process followed by in-depth analysis of the existing process. A new process is drafted with the aim of making the whole procedure more efficient. The new process is then discussed with all the staff involved in the operating room. Following implementation of the process, surgical process re-engineering should ideally be routinely carried out to continuously improve the procedure. We present an example of surgical process re-engineering which we carried out on the procedure of carpal tunnel release. We used carpal tunnel release as a model as it is a very common operation, with predictable intra-operative findings, and the patient is likely to benefit directly from procedure time reduction. A preliminary mapping of three procedures was done followed by a detailed timed mapping of five routine carpal tunnel decompression procedures. The mapped process was analysed in detail and a number of changes were made in the process. After implementing the new process, a further five procedures were mapped and timed again. In comparison to the original process, we achieved a reduction of 20% in the mean procedure time and a reduction of 42% in the number of steps from 66 to 37.

An oceanic eddy of size about 150 kilometer diameter observed in the northeastern Arabian Sea using remote sensing satellite sensors; IRS-P4 OCM, NOAA-AVHRR and NASA Quickscat Scatterometer data. The eddy was detected in the 2nd week of February in Indian Remote Sensing satellite (IRS-P4) Ocean Color Monitor (OCM) sensor retrieved chlorophyll image on 10th February 2002, between latitude 16°90′–18°50′N and longitude 66°05′–67°60′E. The chlorophyll concentration was higher in the central part of eddy (~1.5 mg/m3) than the peripheral water (~0.8 mg/m3). The eddy lasted till 10th March 2002. NOAA-AVHRR sea surface temperature (SST) images generated during 15th February-15th March 2002. The SST in the eddy’s center (~23°C) was lesser than the surrounding water (~24.5°C). The eddy was of cold core type with the warmer water in periphery. Quickscat Scatterometer retrieved wind speed was 8–10 m/sec. The eddy movement observed southeast to southwest direction and might helped in churning. The eddy seemed evident due to convective processes in water column. The processes like detrainment and entrainment play role in bringing up the cooler water and the bottom nutrient to surface and hence the algal blooming. This type of cold core/anti-cyclonic eddy is likely to occur during late winter/spring as a result of the prevailing climatic conditions.

Reaction in a scalar mixing layer in grid-generated turbulence is studied experimentally by doping half of the flow with nitric oxide and the other half with ozone. The flow conditions and concentrations are such that the chemical reaction is passive and the flow and chemical timescales are of the same order. Conserved scalar theory for such flows is outlined and further developed; it is used as a basis for presentation of the experimental results. Continuous measurements of concentration are limited in their spatial and temporal resolution but capture sufficient of their spectra for adequate second-order correlations to be made. Two components of velocity have been measured simultaneously with hot-wire anemometry. Conserved scalar mixing results, deduced from reacting and non-reacting measurements of concentration, show the independence of concentration level and concentration ratio expected for passive reacting flow. The results are subject to several limitations due to the necessary experimental compromises, but they agree generally with measurements made in thermal mixing layers. Reactive scalar statistics are consistent with the realizability constraints obtainable from conserved scalar theory where such constraints apply, and otherwise are generally found to lie between the conserved scalar theory limits for frozen and very fast chemistry. It is suggested that Toor's (1969) closure for the mean chemical reaction rate could be improved by interpolating between the frozen and equilibrium values for the covariance. The turbulent fluxes of the reactive scalars are found to approximately obey the gradient model but the value of the diffusivity is found to depend on the Damköhler number.

Introduction: The controversy over the presence of empathic decline within the course in students of medicine, dentistry and health sciences in general, has not fully been studied. This controversy could be partially solved if massive studies of empathy levels are made in similar cultural, social and economic contexts.Material and Methods: Empathy levels within the course were studied in eighteen dental schools from six countries in Latin America (2013). The mean of the empathy levels were used to study the behavior between first and fifth academic years. The values of empathy levels within the course were observed by applying the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, the Spanish version. All these studies were cross-sectional. The value of means observed, were subjected to regression studies and further adjustment curves were obtained and the coefficient of determination were calculated.Results: Six different models of behavior were observed, which found that five of them suffer empathic decline within the course, but with different final results: in some the decline persists until the fifth academic year and in others, this decline ‘recovers’ persistently until the fifth academic year. The sixth model is characterized by a constant and persistent increase of levels of empathy within the course until the last academic year.Discussion: There are six different models for the behavior of means of levels of empathy within the course evaluated by a common methodology in eighteen dental schools from six countries of Latin America. These findings support the existence of variability of empathic response and a comprehensive approach is needed to find the causes that give rise to this variability.Conclusion: In dental students of Latin America, there is variability in the behavior of the distribution in means between the academic years of the dentistry schools examined in this study.
