First record of a bicephalic chondrichthyan found in Australian waters; the southern fiddler ray, Trygonorrhina dumerilii (Chondrichthyes: Rhinobatidae)

We report the first documented case of bicephaly in a chondrichthyan, the southern fiddler ray, Trygonorrhina dumerilii, in Australian waters. Females in the latter stages of pregnancy, as confirmed by ultrasound, were captured by hand in Swan Bay, Victoria (38.252°S, 144.616°E) in February 2013 and transported to aquaria. Up to 10 females gave birth in aquaria in early April 2013 to 11 neonates, one of which was a still-born, bicephalic neonate. Magnetic resonance imagery of the bicephalic neonate displayed the presence of two parallel vertebral columns running the entire length of the animal, diverging into two well formed heads. Morphological measurements were also made, comparing the bicephalic neonate to normal neonates. The cause of bicephaly is unknown, although congenital and environmental stressors during development may cause this condition.

Environmental contextEnvironmental metabolomics is an emerging field that examines the metabolic changes in organisms in response to potential environmental stressors. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to investigate earthworm metabolic responses to sub-lethal exposure of environmentally persistent pesticides. The study identifies two toxic modes of action elicited by the pesticides, and highlights the potential of metabolomics for the chemical assessment of persistent environmental contaminants. Abstract1-D and 2-D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is used to examine the metabolic response of the earthworm (Eisenia fetida) after contact test exposure to an organofluorine pesticide, trifluralin, and an organochlorine pesticide, endosulfan. Three sub-lethal concentrations were used for each pesticide (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg cm–2 for trifluralin and 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 μg cm–2 for endosulfan). Principal component analysis of the trifluralin and endosulfan NMR datasets showed separation between the unexposed and the exposed earthworm groups. Alanine, glycine, maltose and ATP were significant in the highest concentration (1.0 mg cm–2) for trifluralin-exposed earthworms and may result from a non-polar narcosis toxic mode of action (MOA). Leucine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, lysine, glutamate, valine, glycine, isoleucine, methionine, glutamine, alanine, maltose, glucose, meibiose, malate, fumarate and ATP were detected as significant for the two highest concentrations (1.0 and 2.0 μg cm–2) for endosulfan-exposed earthworms and a neurotoxic MOA is postulated. This study highlights the use of 1-D and 2-D metabolomics for understanding the biochemical response of environmental contaminants to model organisms such as earthworms.

AbstractDuring the studies on ecology of Trichoptera of anthropogenic water bodies we have unexpectedly discovered the parasitic larvae of water mites of the species Tiphys torris on the pupa of Triaenodes bicolor. This is the first documented case of the parasitism of water mites on the caddisfly pupa as well as the first ever record of the species which is regarded as a dipteran parasite on caddisflies. The situation is very untypical for preimaginal stages of caddisflies are used by phoretic and not parasitic water mite larvae. Parasitism has been confirmed in this case by the formation of stylostomes and enlarged sizes of the bodies of the larvae. This is probably the case of facultative parasitism in which the pupa has served as a substitute of the adult form of a caddisfly.

A diverse eutardigrade fauna of the family Eohypsibiidae Bertolani & Kristensen, 1987 was collected on the Faroe Islands. The first record of Bertolanius weglarskae (Dastych, 1972) and new records of Eohypsibius nadjae Kristensen, 1982 are documented. The new genus Austeruseus is established and three new species, Austeruseus faeroensis, nov. sp., A. balduri nov. sp. and A. rokuri nov. sp. are described. The genus differentiates from the genera Bertolanius and Eohypsibius in the buccal tube. The apophyses for the insertion of stylet muscles are (two or six) lateral hooks and the entire length of the mouth and buccal tube are straight in Austeruseus, while Bertolanius and Eohypsibius have the apophyses for the insertion of stylet muscles as crests with ventral and dorsal hooks, and the mouth and buccal tube are flared or trumpet shaped. With five species the Faroese tardigrade fauna is the richest in the world with regard to the family Eohypsibiidae. The genus Austeruseus is primarily found in mosses at high mountain biotopes, and the new genus may be a glacial relic.

Specimens from a swarm of Symphoromyia immaculata (Meigen, 1820) were collected in the act of biting people in a farmhouse in Central Italy. The species is distributed in West and Central Europe and eastwards in Northwest Russia. This is the first record of S. immaculata in Italy, with a documented case of humans suffering from bites of this species.

Electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis (EDXA) are found to be very useful tools for identification of etiologic agents in pneumoconiosis or interstitial pulmonary disorders. Pulmonary interstitial fibrosis and granulomatosis are frequently associated with occupational and environmental pollution. Numerous reports of pneumoconiosis in various occupations such as coal and gold miners are presented in the literature. However, there is no known documented case of pulmonary changes in workers in the sandpaper industry. This study reports a rare case of pulmonary granulomatosis containing deposits from abrasives of sandpaper diagnosed by using EDXA.
