The freshwater sawfish (Pristis microdon) is a critically endangered elasmobranch. Ontogenetic changes in the habitat use of juvenile P. microdon were studied using acoustic tracking in the Fitzroy River, Western Australia. Habitat partitioning was significant between 0+ (2007 year class) and larger 1+ (2006 year class) P. microdon. Smaller 0+ fish generally occupied shallower water (<0.6 m) compared with 1+ individuals, which mainly occurred in depths >0.6 m. Significant differences in hourly depth use were also revealed. The depth that 1+ P. microdon occupied was significantly influenced by lunar phase with these animals utilising a shallower and narrower depth range during the full moon compared with the new moon. This was not observed in 0+ individuals. Habitat partitioning was likely to be related to predator avoidance, foraging behaviours, and temperature and/or light regimes. The occurrence of 1+ P. microdon in deeper water may also result from a need for greater depths in which to manoeuvre. The present study demonstrates the utility of acoustic telemetry in monitoring P. microdon in a riverine environment. These results demonstrate the need to consider the habitat requirements of different P. microdon cohorts in the strategic planning of natural resources and will aid in the development of management strategies for this species.

Yellowfin tuna is one of the most economically important species for fisheries industry in Indonesia. The objectives of this study are to investigate the effect of lunar phase to the set time start and catch rate of yellowfin tuna on tuna longline vessels. Data collected by scientific observer on tuna longline vessels mainly based in Benoa Port, Bali from August 2005 to June 2014. Fishing ground of sampled longline tuna located from 9°-16° S to 109°-120° E. One-way anova analysis and Tukey test conducted to examine the effect of lunar phase to the set time start and catch rate of yellowfin tuna. A total of 60 trips and 1,467 fishing days of longline tuna fishing vessels operation have been sampled for in this study. One-way anova analysis showed that there was a significant difference of lunar phase to the set time start (p<0.05). Furthermore, Tukey test showed that the starting time for setting during the full moon begins at 9:00 am. Its time was around 2 hours slower than the start of setting of the other three moon phase (first quarter, last quarter and new moon) which start around 7:00 am. One-way anova analysis also showed that there was a significant difference of lunar phase to catch rate of yellowfin tuna (p<0.05). Furthermore, Tukey test confirmed that hook rate on new moon and first quarter was 0.13/100 hooks or 0.4 bigger than hook rate on full moon and last quarter with only 0.09/100 hooks.

This study examined the lunar and die1 variation in catch rates and reproductive condition of adult eastern king prawns, Penaeus plebejus, in relatively deep (160 m) coastal waters off south- eastern Queensland. Females numerically dominated catches over most of the lunar cycle and constituted 76% of the weight of the catch. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed an interaction between lunar phase and sex; catches peaked during Lunar Phase 3 (full moon 3 days) and were particularly marked for males. This was the only period during the lunar cycle when the sex ratio approached 1 : 1. There was also an interaction between trawl-time and sex; male catch rates were at a minimum early in the evening, whereas female catch rates were at a maximum then and declined throughout the night. Trawler logbook catch rate data from the same area over a similar period indicated an interaction between lunar cycle and lunar phase. ANOVA revealed an effect of the interaction between phase and sex on the incidence of soft prawns; the incidence of soft males increased during Phase 4 (half moon waning to new moon 3 days). Ovary weight also varied between phases and was higher during Phases 2 (half moon waxing to full moon 3 days) and 4 (half moon waning to new moon 3 days). Trends in the ovary weight and the incidence of histologically mature and ripe females suggested there are two periods of increased spawning activity during each lunar cycle. A cyclic regression fitted to the data explained 93% of the variation in the incidence of ripe females between samples. The influence of these cyclic trends in catch rate and reproductive condition should be considered when monitoring the spawning stock in the fishery and when planning sampling strategies in any future reproductive studies.

We previously showed that the agamid lizard Pogona vitticeps responded to an extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF; frequency: 6 and 8 Hz; peak magnetic field: 2.6 µT; peak electric field: 10 V/m) with tail-lifting behavior. In addition, the tail-lifting response to ELF-EMF disappeared when the parietal eyes of the lizards were covered by small round aluminum caps. This result suggests that the parietal eye contributes to light-dependent magnetoreception. In the present study, we set up an ELF-EMF group to evaluate the long-term effect of the ELF-EMF on lizards’ behavior and examine our hypothesis that exposure to ELF-EMFs increases the magnetic field sensitivity in lizards. We therefore include the lunar phase (full moon/new moon) and K index as environmental factors related to the geomagnetic field in the analysis. The number of tail lifts per individual per day was the response variable while calendar month, daily mean temperature, daily mean humidity, daily mean atmospheric pressure, full moon, new moon, and K index were the explanatory variables. We analyzed an ELF-EMF group and a control group separately. In a multiple linear regression analysis, the independent determinants associated with the number of tail lifts were the full moon, the temperature, February, March, April, and May in the ELF-EMF group and March, April, May, and June in the control group. The P. vitticeps in the ELF-EMF group responded to the full moon whereas those in the control group did not. In addition, in the ELF-EMF group, the number of tail lifts was higher on days when the K index was higher (P = 0.07) in the first period whereas there was no such tendency in either period in the control group. There is the possibility that the exposure to ELF-EMFs may increase magnetic-field sensitivity in lizards.

AbstractDaily light trap catches of Scotinophara coarctata (Thunberg) were analysed from mid-September 1986 to December 1990 and the physiological status of the trapped adults was examined. The catch size fluctuated synchronously with the lunar phase; large catches occurred around the full moon period and very few adults were trapped around the new moon period. Seasonally, the catches were large from January to March and from July to September, while they were small from May to June and October to November. The seasonal fluctuations of the catches seemed to be related to the growth stages of the rice plants on which the adults multiplied. The sex ratio of trapped adults was biased toward males, unlike that of the cage-reared insects which was 1:1. Most of the trapped females showed undeveloped ovaries and some of these females appeared to have oviposited previously. Light-attracted adults showed a considerable tolerance to starvation and survived for 20–30 days when they were given water, but for only two days in the absence of water. When the light-attracted females were supplied with food, their ovaries developed rapidly and females with mature eggs were produced after nine days. When the starvation period was prolonged, the ovaries remained immature and the fat bodies reduced in size. The nocturnal take-off of the adults was not triggered simply by the full moon illumination. Adult eclosion did not synchronize with the moon cycle.

The mysids Rhopalopthalmus egregius, Haplostylus dakini and Doxomysis australiensis are abundant yet unstudied omnivorous crustaceans in Australian estuaries. Habitat use and population dynamics were investigated for these species over spring and summer in the Tweed River, Australia, to explore their ecological role in estuarine ecosystems. Overall, mysids were concentrated in shallow unvegetated and deep unvegetated estuarine habitats. H. dakini were most abundant in shallow and deep bare habitats at night, whereas R. egregius were most abundant in deep bare habitats during the night. D. australiensis were present across all habitats in the night, but negligible numbers were present during the day. Significantly greater numbers of R. egregius and D. australiensis were sampled during the new moon, compared with the full moon. Significantly larger R. egregius and D. australiensis individuals were present in benthic habitats at night, indicating possible partitioning of habitat for juvenile and adult subpopulations. Adaptive foraging strategies and habitat use facilitates the coexistence of sympatric mysid species, H. dakini and R. egregius, and within-species habitat partitioning allowed juvenile R. egregius to avoid interaction with adult R. egregius. The observed dynamics minimize inter- and intra-specific predation between mysids, and by other predators, while optimizing access to key trophic resources.

The table given in this paper contains the results of calculations relating to the objects specified in the title; cast into periods of six, seven, or eight days, so as to bring the day of the lunar phase belonging to it in the middle of the time. The observations were all made in the neighbourhood of London. It appears from them that in the period of the last quarter of the moon the barometer is highest, the temperature a little above the mean, and the depth of rain the smallest. In the period of the new moon, both the barometer and temperature are considerably depressed, and the rain increased in quantity. The influence of the first quarter shows itself by the further depression of the barometer; but the temperature rises almost to the point from which it had fallen, and the rain still increases, but not in an equal ratio. Lastly, the full moon again reduces the temperature; while the barometer attains its maximum mean height, and the quantity of rain is the greatest. Thus it appears, that during this lunar cycle, the approach of the last quarter is the signal for the clearing up of the air, and the return of sunshine.

The lunar phase periodically changes and becomes a factor that affects the waters physically, chemically, and biologically. These conditions in the marine waters cause tidal phenomena which have a major influence on marine life such as blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus). The right fishing strategy can be done by determining the target of one species or by looking at the phases of the moon. This study aims to study the morphometry, sex ratio, weight-width relationship, and maturity level of the crab gonads (Portunus pelagicus) caught by fishermen in the full moon and new moon phases of the Tunggulsari Waters, Rembang. The method used in this research is descriptive exploratory. Research activities were carried out on January 9, 2020, January 28, 2020, February 10, 2020, February 25, 2020, March 10, 2020, and March 24, 2020. The results of the study based on the statistical T test showed that there was an insignificant difference in the catch of the full moon and new moon phases. The crabs that are caught in the full moon phase have an average size of weight and width that is smaller than in the new moon phase. Analysis of the relationship between the width and weight of small crabs in the waters of Tunggulsari Waters is negative allometric, which means that the carapace width grows faster than its weight.

Evidence has accumulated over the years indicating that the moon influences some aspects of the reproductive activity in animals and humans. However, little is known about the influence of the lunar cycle on the reproductive performance of cows under tropical conditions, where the environment strongly affects reproduction. This retrospective study was conducted with the aim of assessing the influence of the lunar cycle on some reproductive traits of tropical crossbred cows managed in a pasture-based system. Data from 5869 reproductive records from two commercial farms localized in the Maracaibo Lake Basin of Zulia State, Venezuela, were analyzed. Variables studied were first service conception rate, calving frequency, first postpartum estrous frequency, and pregnancy frequency. In addition to the lunar cycle, the effects of farm, season, and predominant breed were also considered. Data were analyzed using logistic regression and general linear model from SAS. First service conception was affected by lunar phases and predominant breed, but not by farm or season. For frequencies of calving, first postpartum estrus, and pregnancy, there was no main effect of farm, season, and predominant breed, whereas the effect of lunar phases was highly significant. First service conception was significantly greater in waning than in crescent phase of the lunar cycle. Frequencies of calving, first estrus, and pregnancy were highly correlated and showed greater figures around full moon and new moon. In conclusion, lunar cycle influenced first service conception, attaining greater values in the waning phase of the moon cycle. Frequencies of calving, first postpartum estrus, and pregnancy in crossbred cows showed a clear bimodal rhythm, whose greatest values coincided with new moon and full moon.

Konsentrasi kolesterol dan asam-asam lemak telur mengalami perubahan mengikuti lama pengeraman oleh induk yang menunjukkan terjadinya peningkatan kematangan telur (P<0,05).Spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus) hatchery has not been developed in Indonesia. Major constraints were limited broodstock spawning techniques, low incidence of eggs-berried broodstock, and unknown eggs profile. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of eyestalk ablation, spawning methods and moon circulation to molted, the number of eggs berried of females, and eggs-berried cholesterol and fatty acids profiles. Individual and mass spawning during full and new moon were used in this studies. Female and male broodstocks were used for consecutive spawning with ratio 2:1. The first study was used individual spawning during new moon. The second and third studies were used mass spawning during full moon and new moon, respectively. Eggs-berried profile compared concentration of cholesterol and fatty acids during 1, 2, and 3-4 weeks. Results showed eyestalk ablation stimulated individual or mass spawned and molted of female as early indicator of spawning. Full moon and mass spawning supported more eggs-berried female broodstock than that of other methods. Cholesterol and fatty acids showed different concentration within 1, 2, and 3-4 weeks of eggs-berried that supported eggs maturity (P<0.05).

AbstractAztec images of decapitated goddesses link the symbolism of astronomy with politics and the seasonal cycle. Rituals reenacting decapitation may refer to lunar events in the context of a solar calendar, providing evidence of a luni-solar calendar. Decapitation imagery also involves metaphors expressing the rivalry between the cults of the sun and the moon. Huitzilopochtli's decapitation of Coyolxauhqui can be interpreted as a symbol of political conquest linked to the triumph of the sun over the moon. Analysis of Coyolxauhqui's imagery and mythology indicates that she represents the full moon eclipsed by the sun. Details of the decapitation myth indicate specific links with seasonal transition and events taking place at dawn and at midnight. Other decapitated goddesses, often referred to as earth goddesses with “lunar connections,” belong to a complex of lunar deities representing the moon within the earth (the new moon). Cihuacoatl, a goddess of the new moon, takes on threatening quality when she assumes the form of a tzitzimime attacking the sun during a solar eclipse. The demonic new moon was greatly feared, for it could cause an eternal solar eclipse bringing the Aztec world to an end.
