Relating microalgal spatial patterns to flow, mouth and nutrient status in the temporarily open/closed Mngazi estuary, South Africa

The Mngazi estuary, a near pristine and wave-dominated estuary located on the subtropical east coast of South Africa, requires careful management to ensure that land use does not alter its ecological function. The present study investigated the quality and quantity of water in the estuary and related these to the microalgae. There was no evidence of a persistent elevated phytoplankton biomass in the region of the estuary where river water mixed with brackish estuarine water, even during periods when the estuary mouth was open. Nutrients that determined the microalgal distribution were likely to have come from the mineralisation of organic material, which had been deposited in the estuary following pulses in river water. Results indicate that microalgae were P-limited when the mouth was semi-closed and N-limited during the closed mouth phase. Average benthic chlorophyll a, which ranged from 0.3 to 56.8 µg g–1, was highest in the intertidal middle reaches of the estuary. Organic matter and the proportion of fine sediments (<125 µm) was highest in these sediments. A conceptual model was developed to predict the response of the estuary if further changes in the quality and quantity of river water entering the estuary were to occur.

Water, sediment, and fish samples were collected during the Danube excursion 1988, within a coordinated sampling program of the Radiology Working Group of the “Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donauforschung ” (K.Hübel, Munich; I. Kurcz, Budapest; D.Rank, Vienna). The H-3 content of the river water and the radioactivity of the bottom sediments were measured at the BVFA Arsenal, Vienna. The determined H-3 content of the Danube water corresponds with the long-term trend in the H-3 content of the hydrosphere; the values lie in the range of 3 Bq/kg downstream from Belgrade, upstream from Belgrade they are about 4 Bq/kg. It was only in the waste water plume of the nuclear power station of Kozloduj that a slightly elevated H-3 value - 6 Bq/kg - was determined. The content of the sediments of artificial radionuclides was found, at the time of the Danube field excursion, to be almost exclusively due to the radioactive material released following the reactor accident at Chernobyl in April 1986 (mainly Cs-137 and Cs-134). As a consequence of the air currents and precipitation conditions prevailing at the time of the accident, the bottom sediments in the lower course of the Danube were less contaminated than those in the upper course. The fine sediments were found to contain over 3000 Bq/kg of Cs-137 in the upper course of the Danube.

The thick-shelled clam Meretrix morphina, previously referred to as Meretrix meretrix, now occurs in the west Indian Ocean region, along the eastern seaboard of Africa, from the Red Sea to the Mlalazi Estuary, close to the Tugela River. Its presence in South Africa is only of recent recording. Meretrix morphina was detected for the first time in Lake St Lucia in 2000. The population declined and was not detected from 2005 until 2011, most likely as a result of a severe drought that resulted in widespread desiccation and hypersalinity in the lake. The system then experienced increased freshwater input resulting in lower salinities from 2011 until 2014, during which time M. morphina reappeared and their population gradually increased. In 2015, M. morphina became abundant in St Lucia, attaining unprecedented densities of 447 ind./m2. Biomass, expressed as a fresh weight, varied in the different basins of St Lucia, ranging from 195 g/m2 at Lister’s Point to 1909.8 g/m2 at Catalina Bay. However, in 2016, when drought conditions returned, M. morphina disappeared. This species appears to thrive under brackish salinities and high temperatures. It is able to establish large populations with high biomass and can become dominant. However, M. morphina is sensitive to desiccation and hypersaline conditions. This clam has substantial commercial value and is exploited along the African east coast, particularly in Mozambique. In future, it may feature more prominently in South African estuaries. However, the ecology of M. morphina is still largely unknown.

The single-factor evaluation method, improved Nemerow index method, fuzzy mathematical synthesis evaluation method and comprehensive nutrient status index method were used to evaluate the water quality of the Zijiang River in summer, and to analyze the applicability of the evaluation methods. The results show that: (1) The Zijiang River is heavily polluted with nitrogen and TN is the main pollutant in the summer. The overall nutrient status index is 34.33, which is not eutrophic. (2) The single-factor evaluation method is simple and suitable for rapid identification of excessive pollutants, but cannot reflect the water quality. the Nemerow index method takes into account the weight of each evaluation factor in the river water quality, and is suitable for making a comprehensive evaluation of the river water quality, but has a certain degree of subjectivity when classifying the water quality. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is suitable for reflecting the influence of different evaluation factors on water quality by calculating the weight and membership degree of each evaluation factor, but the calculation is complicated.The Integrated Nutrient Status Index method is suitable for determining whether eutrophication is occurring in a water body and cannot determine the water quality category.

Cyanobacterial blooms in lakes of low nutrient status are recent ecological surprises. Culling of planktivorous fish may help suppress phytoplankton blooms via a trophic cascade effect. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a 90-day experiment adjacent to a shallow oligomesotrophic lake increasingly beset by midsummer cyanobacterial blooms in the presence of high abundances of minnows and sparse herbivorous zooplankton. The single-factor (± three spottail shiners, Notropis hudsonius) experimental design was replicated 10 times for a total of twenty 1200 L capacity mesocosms. Contrary to the trophic cascade hypothesis, minnow removal decreased the abundance of bosminids capable of grazing cyanobacteria. Nevertheless, removal of the minnows significantly both suppressed phytoplankton biomass and offset the development of cyanobacteria, such as Gloeotrichia echinulata. Lower concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen in the fishless relative to stocked mesocosms best explained these differences in the phytoplankton community. Our findings highlight how fisheries management practices that enhance minnow populations in lakes of low productivity may inadvertently contribute to cyanobacterial blooms through increased nutrient cycling.
