A revision of Neoaratus Ricardo, with the description of six allied new genera from the Australian region (Diptera : Asilidae : Asilini)

Neoaratus Ricardo is redefined and considered as monotypic. Six new genera, Abrophila, Colepia, Dolopus, Mauropteron, Reburrus and Zosteria, are erected to accommodate 19 species previously placed in Neoaratus as well as 39 new species described below. The following are proposed as new synonyms: Asilus grandis Macquart, 1848 = A. rufiventris Macquart, 1838; Asilus leon Walker, 1849 = A. rubrithorax Macquart, 1838; Mochtherus lautus van der Wulp, 1872 = A. biligata Walker, 1864; Asilus ferrugineiventris Macquart, 1850 = A. fulvipubescens Macquart, 1850. Asilus grandis Macquart is removed from synonymy with Neoaratus hercules (Wiedemann) and proposed as a synonym of A. rufiventris Macquart, 1838. Abrophila whitei is proposed as a replacement name for the preoccupied Asilus aureus White, 1918. The following are new combinations: Colepia abludo (Daniels, 1983), C. ingloria (Macleay, 1826), C. malleola (Walker, 1849), C. rufiventris (Macquart, 1838); Dolopus genitalis (Hardy, 1920), D. rubrithorax (Macquart, 1838); Mauropteron pelago (Walker, 1849); Reburrus bancrofti (Hardy, 1935), R. kochi (de Meijere, 1913), R. macquarti (Bigot, 1860), R. wieneckii (van der Wulp, 1872); Zosteria alcetas (Walker, 1849), Z. biligata (Walker, 1864); Z. fulvipubescens (Macquart, 1850), Z. iflingworthi (Hardy, 1922), Z. murina (Macquart, 1838), Z. rosevillensis (Hardy, 1935), Z. sydneensis (Macquart, 1838). The following new species are described: Colepia chrysochaites, C. comatacauda, C. compernis, C. cultripes, C. flavifacies, C. horrida, C. ignicolor, C. lanata, C. naevia, C. novaeguineae; Dolopus mirus, D. silvestris, D. simulans; Mauropteron farinum; Reburrus aquilonius, R. caledonicae, R. peninsularis; Zosteria affinis, Z. alpina, Z. caesariata, Z. calignea, Z, claudiana, Z. clausum, Z. clivosa, Z. eastwoodi, Z. hispida, Z. lineata, Z. longiceps, Z. montana, Z, nigrifemorata, Z. novazealandica, Z. punicea, Z. queenslandi, Z. rubens, Z. ruspata, Z. suda, Z. varia and Z. venato. All seven genera occur in Australia. Species of three genera, Colepia, Reburrus and Zosteria, also occur elsewhere, as follows: Timor (R. wieneckii], New Guinea (C. novaeguineae, R. kocki, Z. biligata and Z. illingworthi), New Caledonia and New Hebrides (R. caledonicae and R. macquarti], and New Zealand (Z. novazealandica). Z. illingworthi is common to Australia and New Guinea. The female reproductive system and the components of the male terminalia are illustrated and briefly described for most species. Pupal exuviae of C. ingloria, C. malleola, C, rufiventris, N. hercules, Z. fulvipubescens and Z. sydneensis are illustrated and/or described. Keys to the genera of Australian Asilini and the species of the new genera are given. Lectotypes are designated for Antipalus wieneckii, Asilus ferrugineiventris, A. leon, A. murinus, A. pelago, A. rufiventris, Neoaratus bancrofti and N. rosevillensis. Asilus regius Jaennicke and Asilus tasmaniae Macquart, formerly considered as species of Neoaratus, are not treated because their status is uncertain.

In this study, the clearwing moths (Sesiidae) of Australia, New Guinea and the Pacific Islands are reviewed. A total of 58 species belonging to 18 genera are recognized as native to this region. This includes the following new species and genera: Lophocnema mackeyi spec. nov. (Australia), Oligophlebia insurgia spec. nov. (New Guinea), Micrecia capillaria spec. nov. (New Guinea), Micrecia kuukuyau spec. nov. (Australia), Micrecia hawkei spec. nov. (Australia), Lamellisphecia sanguinea spec. nov. (New Guinea), Specodoptera hiltoni spec. nov. (New Guinea), Specodoptera hiltoni hibernia spec. nov., ssp. nov. (New Guinea), Aegerosphecia rufea spec. nov. (New Guinea), Melittia flanneryi spec. nov. (New Guinea), Melittia pyroptella spec. nov. (Australia), Archaeosesia milleri gen. nov. et spec. nov. (New Guinea), Nokona kungkay spec. nov. (Australia), Nokona bipora spec. nov. (New Guinea), Pseudosesia muyuae spec. nov. (New Guinea), Pseudosesia sumoensis spec. nov. (New Guinea), Pseudosesia sepikensis spec. nov. (New Guinea), Paranthrenella terminalia spec. nov. (New Guinea), Paranthrenella brandti spec. nov. (New Guinea), Paranthrenella lelatensis sp. nov. (New Guinea). Furthermore, 35 new combinations and each four new generic and species synonyms are introduced, while two genera and three species are resurrected from synonymy. Each 4 taxa at the species and genus levels are considered new synonyms. Six species are listed that originally derive from Africa, Europe, Northern Africa or Central America and were introduced into Australia or some of the Pacific Islands accidentally or deliberately. 


The biogeography of the subgenus is correlated with the morphological evolution of the species. From a source round the Coral Sea the subgenus has diversified into four evolutionary lines, namely sect. Pharmacosycea (America), ser. Nervosae (Indo-Pacific), ser. Vasculosae (Afro-Indo-Pacific) and ser. Austrocaledonicae (New Caledonia, Loyalty Islands, New Hebrides). The last in its isolation shows the pachycaul-leptocaul evolution. F. pseudojaca (New Guinea) is critical in this interpretation. F. smithii is removed to ser. Nervosae. F. pritchardii (Fiji) is removed to sect. Sycocarpus subsect. Papuasyce in alliance with F. microdictya , but this group may relate with ancestral Pharmacosycea . The species of ser. Austrocaledonicae are described and illustrated to show this unique evolutionary line: F. lifouensis (Loyalty Isl.) is described as new. In ser. Nervosae , in the alliance of F. pachysycia , two new species are described, F. homodroma and F. mesotes .

SummaryIn view of the discovery of several new species and subspecies of Amblypelta (Hemiptera, COREIDAE), some of which are either known to be or else threaten to become of economic importance, a revision of the whole genus has become necessary.The genus Amblypelta, as defined in the present paper and as known so far, is confined to Australia north of Sydney, the islands between Australia and New Guinea, New Guinea and, to the west, the Kai Is., Timor and Java; the Bismarck Archipelago, the Solomon Islands including Bougainville, Eennell and Bellona; the New Hebrides and New Caledonia. In the present revision of the genus, twelve species and five subspecies are included, of which all but seven species are new to science. Apart from the descriptions of the new species and subspecies, taxonomic notes on the previously known species are given as well as a key to all the species.The known distribution of each species is stated, and consideration given to the zoogeography of the genus as a whole, and of certain species-groups which can be recognised within the genus.

The Australian phasmid fauna has been revised prior to publication of a field guide by the same authors. Six new genera are described: Austrosipyloidea Brock & Hasenpusch, Cornicandovia Hasenpusch & Brock, Davidrentzia Brock & Hasenpusch, Micropodacanthus Brock & Hasenpusch, Paratropidoderus Brock & Hasenpusch and Spinosipyloidea Hasenpusch & Brock. Sixteen new species from various parts of Australia are described and figured: Candovia robinsoni Brock & Hasenpusch, Rhamphosipyloidea palumensis Hasenpusch & Brock, Scionecra milledgei Hasenpusch & Brock, Sipyloidea brevicerci Hasenpusch & Brock, Sipyloidea garradungensis Hasenpusch & Brock, Sipyloidea larryi Hasenpusch & Brock, Sipyloidea lewisensis Hasenpusch & Brock, Sipyloidea rentzi Brock & Hasenpusch, Sipyloidea whitei Brock & Hasenpusch, Spinosipyloidea doddi Hasenpusch & Brock [all Necrosciinae], Pachymorpha spinosa Brock & Hasenpusch [Pachymorphinae], Davidrentzia valida Brock & Hasenpusch [Platycraninae], Micropodacanthus mouldsi Brock & Hasenpusch, Micropodacanthus sztrakai Brock & Hasenpusch, Paratropidoderus spinosus Brock & Hasenpusch and Podacanthus keyi Brock & Hasenpusch [Tropidoderinae].        A number of new combinations are proposed, new synonyms and incorrect synonymy corrected following detailed examination of type and other material: 1. Hyrtacus Stål, 1875 (= Marcenia Sjöstedt, 1918 syn. n.): H. caurus (Tepper, 1905) comb. n. transferred from Lonchodes Gray, 1835 (three new synonyms also reported for this species: Bacillus peristhenellus Tepper, 1905, Hyrtacus cunctatrix (Sjöstedt, 1918) and Hyrtacus nigrogranulosus Sjöstedt, 1918). Marcenia frenchi (Wood-Mason, 1877) is a new synonym of Hyrtacus tuberculatus Stål, 1875. 2. The species of the former antlion subtribe Periclystina (Neuroptera: Myrmeleontidae) are revised. Prior to this work Periclystina comprised 10 genera and 63 species endemic to Australia (62 spp.) and New Guinea (1 sp.). In this work two former genera are synonymized and four new genera are proposed (for a total of 12 valid genera), and six former species are synonymized and 16 new species are proposed (for a total of 73 valid species). A parsimony analysis utilizing 62 morphological characters is used to infer phylogenetic relationships among all 73 species, and suitable outgroups. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analysis, the tribal and/or generic assignments of 55 (75%) of former Periclystina species are modified here. Periclystina and its two largest genera—Austrogymnocnemia and Glenoleon—were all recovered as polyphyletic in their former circumscriptions. Ten species—placed here in six genera: Anomaloplectron, Csiroleon, Fissuleon gen. nov., Franzenia, Fusoleon and Latileon gen. nov.—clustered phylogenetically with Acanthoplectron and are transferred to the tribe Acanthoplectrini. The remaining 63 species—placed in six additional genera: Austrogymnocnemia, Glenoleon, Megagonoleon gen. nov., Minyleon gen. nov., Periclystus and Riekoleon—form a monophyletic Periclystus genus group and are transferred to the tribe Dendroleontini. All 73 species are (re)described and illustrated. New identification keys are provided for the tribes of Dendroleontinae, for the Australian genera of Acanthoplectrini and Dendroleontini, and for each of the non-monotypic genera treated. In addition, five new lectotypes are designated and 35 new combinations are created.

Stiletto-flies (Diptera: Therevidae) are highly diverse and species-rich in Australia and New Zealand, yet relatively few species have been recorded from neighbouring Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and throughout the remainder of Oceania. Indeed, in New Caledonia only a single species of the widely distributed Australasian genus Anabarhynchus Macquart (Therevinae) is previously known. Herein we describe two new agapophytine genera (i.e., Jeanchazeauiagen. nov., Calophytusgen. nov.), together comprising nine charismatic new species; this represents a first record of the subfamily from New Caledonia. The new genera and species are described and figured.

Lithosiini genera of the Asura / Miltochrista generic complex related to Barsine Walker, 1854 sensu lato and Asura Walker, 1854 are overviewed. Barsine is considered to be a group having such an autapomorphic feature as a basal saccular process of valva only. Many species without this process are separated to the diverse and species-rich genus Ammatho stat. nov., which is subdivided here into eight subgenera including Idopterum Hampson, 1894 downgraded here to a subgenus level, and six new subgenera: Ammathella Volynkin, subgen. nov., Composine Volynkin, subgen. nov., Striatella Volynkin & Huang, subgen. nov., Conicornuta Volynkin, subgen. nov., Delineatia Volynkin & Huang, subgen. nov. and Rugosine Volynkin, subgen. nov. The genus Allochrista Roepke, 1946 is synonymised with the subgenus Thyrgorina Walker, [1865] of the genus Lemyra Walker, 1856 (tribe Arctiini) with establishing a new combination Lemyra (Thyrgorina) toxopei (Roepke, 1946), comb. nov. Other six new synonyms are established: Barsine pardalis (Mell, 1922) = Barsine miranda Kishida & Wang, 2017, syn. nov., Barsine striata striata (Bremer & Grey, 1852) = Miltochrista quelparta Okamota, 1924, syn. nov., Floridasura tricolor (Wileman, 1910) = Barsine coccinea Moore, 1886, syn. nov., Disasuridia metaphaea (Hampson, 1900) = Disasuridia flava Fang, 1991, syn. nov., Aberrasine aberrans aberrans (Butler, 1877) = Miltochrista decussata (Moore, 1877), syn. nov. and Cabarda nigripuncta (Wileman & South, 1919) = Asura lunilinea Schaus, 1922, syn. nov. In addition, it is stated that Miltochrista quadrifasciata Rothschild, 1913 described from New Guinea and currently belonging to the genus Cyme (a junior synonym of Cyme sexualis (Felder, 1864)) is an invalid name, being a secondary junior homonym (homonym nov.) of Cyme quadrifasciata (Rothschild, 1913), comb. nov. described from Sulawesi. A full check-list of members of the Asura / Miltochrista generic complex with 370 new combinations is present.

This paper is a review and revision of the tribe Sogdini (Coleoptera: Leoididae: Leiodinae) of North and Central America. It covers the following genera: Triarthron Märkel, 1840, with one species; Hydnobius Schmidt, 1841, with seven species; Stereus Wollaston, 1857, new for North America, with one species; Sogda Lopatin, 1961, new for North America, with two species; Kalohydnobius new genus, with three species; Macrohydnobius new genus, with six species; and Platyhydnobius new genus, with eight species. The species are inhabitants of northern and mountain forests or sandy habitats. Larvae and adults probably feed on subterranean fungi. The following new synonyms are recognized: Triarthron pennsylvanicum Horn, 1883 = T. lecontei Horn, 1868; Hydnobius luggeri Hatch, 1927 = H. substriatus LeConte, 1863; Hydnobius lobatus Hatch, 1936 = H. longidens LeConte, 1879; Hydnobius longulus LeConte, 1879 = Sogda obtusa (LeConte,1879); Hydnobius femoratus Hatch, 1936 = Kalohydnobius strigilatus (Horn, 1880); and Hydnobius stacesmithi Hatch, 1957 = Macrohydnobius matthewsii (Crotch, 1874). Hydnobius kiseri Hatch, 1936 and H. longidens LeConte, 1879 are resurrected from synonymy to valid species status. The following new combinations are established: Sogda obtusa (LeConte, 1879), ex Hydnobius; Kalohydnobius strigilatus (Horn, 1880), ex Hydnobius; Macrohydnobius contortus (Hatch, 1957), ex Hydnobius; M. crestonensis (Hatch, 1957), ex Hydnobius; M. matthewsii (Crotch, 1874), ex Hydnobius; M. simulator (Brown, 1932), ex Hydnobius; Platyhydnobius arizonensis (Horn, 1885), ex Hydnobius; and P. validus (Brown1932), ex Hydnobius. Lectotypes are designated for Hydnobius substriatus LeConte, 1863; H. pumilus LeConte, 1879; H. obtusus LeConte, 1879; H. longulus LeConte, 1879; H. strigilatus Horn, 1880 and H. matthewsii Crotch, 1874. New species are Hydnobius acarinus, H. autumnalis, Stereus arenarius, Sogda enigma, Kalohydnobius californicus, K. dentatus, Macrohydnobius montanus, M. tibiocalcaris, Platyhydnobius andersoni, P. bicolor, P. calvario, P. howdenorum, P. latigra, and P. newtonorum.

The genus Afrodonta s. lat. is shown to comprise several lineages with distinctive shell characters primarily associated with the microsculpture of the protoconch and teleoconch, and the manner in which the apertural barriers are deposited. These lineages comprise Afrodonta s. str. and five new genera: Amatholedonta gen. nov., Biomphalodonta gen. nov., Costulodonta gen. nov., Iterodonta gen. nov. and Phialodonta gen. nov. Twelve new species are described, doubling the diversity of aperturally dentate charopid snails known from southern Africa. All new species are narrow-range endemics. A new subspecies of one of the more widely distributed species of Afrodonta s. str. is also described. Keys to genera and species are provided. New species and subspecies: Afrodonta geminodonta sp. nov., Af. inhluzaniensis leptolamellaris subsp. nov., Af. mystica sp. nov., Af. pentodon sp. nov., Amatholedonta fordycei gen. et sp. nov., Biomphalodonta forticostata gen. et sp. nov., Costulodonta bidens gen. et sp. nov., C. pluridens gen. et sp. nov., Iterodonta ammonita gen. et sp. nov., Phialodonta agulhasae gen. et sp. nov., P. atromontana gen. et sp. nov., P. aviana gen. et sp. nov. and P. rivalalea gen. et sp. nov. New synonyms: Afrodonta bilamellaris londonensis Solem, 1970 = Afrodonta bilamellaris Melvill & Ponsonby, 1908. New combinations: Afrodonta acinaces Connolly, 1933, Afrodonta burnupi Connolly, 1933 and Afrodonta trilamellaris Melvill & Ponsonby, 1908 are transferred to Costulodonta gen. nov.; Afrodonta bimunita Connolly, 1939 is transferred to Amatholedonta gen. nov.; Afrodonta introtuberculata Connolly, 1933 and Afrodonta perfida Burnup, 1912 are transferred to Phialodonta gen. nov.
