Taxonomy and distribution of the inornata species-group of the Papuan genus Idiocnemis Selys (Odonata:Zygoptera:Platycnemididae)

The inornata species-group, a presumed monophyletic assemblage of species of the Papuan damselfly genus Idiocnemis Selys, 1878, is revised with special regard to phylogenetically relevant morphological characters and the distribution of its species. Diagnoses of all nine previously described species are presented together with the description of two new species, I. adelbertensis, sp. nov. from northeast New Guinea and I. australis, sp. nov. from southern central New Guinea. Keys to males and females are provided. The male ligulae of all species were examined by using scanning electron microscopy. A diagnosis of the genus and a nomenclatural note on the family-group name Calicnemiinae Fraser, 1957 is included.

Abstract At the species level, bryozoans (class Phylactolaemata) in the family Plumatellidae are difficult to organize taxonomically. Of principal concern is the absence of consistent distinguishing features due mainly to plasticity of the group, a common problem with soft-bodied invertebrates. Yet, within the last three decades, analysis of distinctive chitinous statoblasts—using scanning electron microscopy—has resolved certain taxonomic questions. I examined statoblasts from 30 similar collections, the majority from the midwestern United States, and identified four distinct subgroups. Also, nine new statoblast surface features were identified: fold, polar grooves, bead, cave, demarcation, parasutural zone, ridge, sutural band, and sutural knob. The surface features of floating statoblasts (floatoblasts) provide useful data for species identification. Most consistently useful in plumatellids is a suture which varies from one species to the next. Mound-like tubercles and net-like ridges are next in the extent of variability. Finally, folds and polar grooves are present but vary even within floatoblasts from the same colony. Analysis of the suture in Plumatella fungosa, over a 5-day germination period, reveals all features at the site remain intact regardless of the initial age of the floatoblast. Only the suture line itself splits lengthwise to permit emergence of the new animal.

AbstractThe morphology and morphometry of nematodes of six species of the family Ceramonematidae is described using light and scanning electron microscopy. In this paper, we describe two new species and redescribe two known species of Ceramonema and one new species each of Pselionema and Pterygonema. Ceramonema altogolfi sp. n. is characterised by the 0.8-1.3 mm long body, 187-247 body annules, weakly developed zygapophyses, presence of intracuticular vacuoles, sexual dimorphism in amphid shape, presence of vaginal sclerotisation, complex gubernaculum and relatively uniform anal and cloacal annules, whilst C. inguinispina sp. n. has a 0.8-1.1 mm long body, 135-191 body annules, weakly developed zygapophyses, presence of intracuticular vacuoles, sexual dimorphism in amphid shape, absence of vaginal sclerotisation, thorn-shaped precloacal projection, plate-like gubernaculum and double cloacal annule. Pselionema psednum sp. n. is distinguished by 1.4-1.7 mm long body, 251-292 body annules, weakly developed zygapophyses, absence of intracuticular vacuoles, sexual dimorphism in amphid shape and Pterygonema mexicanum sp. n. is characterised by having amphids lacking a central thorn-like projection and pharynx with a distinct posterior glandular bulb. Populations of Ceramonema rectum and Ceramonema cf. yunfengi are also described. The male cloacal region of the species examined appears to be a rich potential source of taxonomic characters that have as yet received insufficient attention for this family.

With three genera and 35 previously known species from India, SE Asia, Central and South America, Glomeridesmida are one of the least diverse Diplopoda groups. Here we describe Glomeridesmus siamensissp. nov., the first species of the order Glomeridesmida from Thailand. The geographically nearest confamiliar species have been described from southern India, Sumatra and Java. The species is described combining photographs, light- and scanning electron microscopy of mature and younger males, females and juveniles. Several characters are illustrated for the first time for an Asian representative of the family Glomeridesmidae. In addition to the type locality of G. siamensissp. nov. from Krabi province, locality data of unidentified Glomeridesmus from Thailand are also given. These data are providing further evidence that the Glomeridesmida are not uncommon, but overlooked as they are small and difficult to collect. The unusual telopods and other morphological characters of G. siamensissp. nov. differ considerably from the few Glomeridesmus males described from Central and South America as well as from India, but the unclear status of two generic names available for species from Indonesia prevents us from adding another generic name to this small and understudied order.

Over the last decades significant progress was achieved in the investigations of water fleas (Crustacea: Cladocera). Their morphology, taxonomy and biogeography can be considered as well-studied, but still there are genera almost ignored by taxonomists. The genus Ceriodaphnia Dana, 1853 (Cladocera: Daphniidae) belongs to such problematic groups. From previous publications, it is obvious that different taxa from the genus have a very different morphology of their ephippia. Here, we study ephippium morphology in six common taxa from central-northern European Russia (Ceriodaphnia megops Sars, 1862; C. laticaudata P.E. Müller, 1867; C. rotunda (Straus, 1820) sensu Sars, 1862; C. quadrangula (O.F. Müller, 1785); C. pulchella Sars, 1862; C. reticulata (Jurine, 1820)) using light and scanning electron microscopy. A key to their identification based on ephippium morphology is proposed. This could be the starting point for revisions based on morphological characters with special emphasis on ephippia. Also, we propose that Ceriodaphnia taxa at least from the Holocene subfossil samples could be identified to the species group level according to structure of their ephippia. This approach to identification of Ceriodaphnia remains in sediments could improve palaeoecological reconstructions. However a global revision of the genus is still needed.

Two new mite species belonging to the genus Stereotydeus Berlese, 1901 were discovered from locations along the coast of Victoria Land, continental Antarctica. Previous records of this genus in the area under study only reported the presence of S. belli and S. mollis. Although those studies included no morphological analyses, it has since been assumed that only these species were present within the area. Specimens of S. ineffabilis sp. nov. and S. nunatakis sp. nov. were obtained, sometimes in sympatry, from four different localities in Central and South Victoria Land and are here described and illustrated using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Features useful for identification of the two new Stereotydeus species include the size of the specimens, the length of the apical segment of pedipalps, the presence/absence of division of the femora, the position of solenidia, the shape and disposition of the rhagidiform organs on the tarsi, the shape of the apical setae of the tarsi, the numbers of aggenital setae and the position of the anal opening. A key to 14 of the 15 currently described Antarctic and sub-Antarctic Stereotydeus species is provided.

Due to large size and enormous morphological plasticity, the taxonomy of the genus Astragalus is very complex and challenging. The identification and grouping of species chiefly based on macromorphological characters become sometimes difficult in the genus. In the present study, the micromorphology of the seeds of 30 species belonging to 14 sections of Astragalus from India has been examined applying scanning electron microscopy (SEM) along with light microscopy (LM) to evaluate their role in identification and classification. Attention was paid to colour, shape, size and surface of seeds. The overall size of the seeds ranges from 1.5–3.2 × 0.8–2.2 mm. The shape of the seeds is cordiform, deltoid, mitiform, orbicular, ovoid and reniform. The colour of seeds varies from brown to blackish-brown to black. Papillose, reticulate, ribbed, rugulate and stellate patterns were observed on the seed coat surface (spermoderm) among different species. The study reveals that the seed coat ornamentations have evolved differently among species and do not support the subgeneric and sectional divisions of the genus. However, they add an additional feature to the individual species, which may help in identification in combination with other macro-morphological features.

Generic concepts in the Testudinaceae (Ascomycotina, Loculoascomycetes) are reviewed with particular emphasis on the sculpturing of the ascospores which has been examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the first time. A key to the nine genera accepted in the family is provided of which two are described as new: Ulospora for U. bilgramii comb.nov. (= Zopfia bilgramii D. Hawksw. et al.), the ascospores of which have three to six deep fissures in each cell, and Zopfiofoveola for Z. punctata comb.nov. (= Zopfia punctata D. Hawksw. & C. Booth), with distinctly and regularly foveolate ascospores. One further new combination is made: Rechingeriella boudieri comb.nov. (= Zopfia boudieri Arnaud). The positions of three additional genera referred to the family by earlier authors but which are excluded from it here are also briefly discussed.

We describe morphological features not previously reported for this old acanthocephalan Nephridiacanthus major (Bremser, 1811 in Westrumb, 1821) Golvan, 1962 first described over 200 years ago. Our specimens were collected from long-eared hedgehog Hemiechinus auritus (Gmelin, 1770) (Erinaceidae) in Iran. We compare the morphometrics of our material with others previously reported from the same host in Iran, Russia, central Asia and Europe. Our specimens had markedly smaller proboscides, proboscis hooks and lemnisci than those reported from Russia and central Asia, but comparable measurements of other structures with specimens previously described from other collections. We document our new observations with scanning electron microscopy features not previously demonstrable by other observers and provide a chemical analysis of proboscis hooks using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis for the first time. The molecular profile of this acanthocephalan, based on 18S rDNA and cox1 genes, was generated for the first time. The phylogenetic analysis showed that N. major is placed in a clade of the family Oligacanthorhynchidae, well separated from the families Moniliformidae and Gigantorhynchidae.
