Three new genera of Indo-Australian Dermestidae (Coleoptera) and their phylogenetic significance

Three new genera are described, providing valuable new information on the phylogeny and biogeography of the family Dermestidae: Derbyana, gen. nov., containing only D. matthewsi, sp. nov. from north-western Australia; Orphilodes, gen. nov., with three Australian species, O. australis, sp. nov. (type of the genus), O. minor, sp. nov. and O. malleecola, sp. nov.; and Trichodryas, gen. nov., with one described species, T. esoterica sp. nov., from the Malay Peninsula and undescribed species from the Sulu Archipelago, Sabah, Kalimantan and Java. A cladistic analysis is included based on a matrix consisting of the three new genera, exemplar genera representing all major groups of Dermestidae and outgroup exemplars from the families Eucinetidae, Derodontidae, Nosodendridae, Endecatomidae and Bostrichidae. Based on the results, a new supergeneric classification is proposed and compared with those in other recent works on Dermestidae and related groups. Recognised subfamilies and tribes include Orphilinae, Attageninnae, Thorictinae, Dermestinae (Marioutini and Dermestini), Megatominae and Trinodinae (Thylodriini and Trinodini). Trichelodini is suppressed and Hexanodes Blair is removed from synonymy with Trichelodes Carter. Keys are given to adults and larvae of the subfamilies of Dermestidae and the genera of Orphilinae, Dermestinae and Trinodinae.

The phylogenetic relationships of the Australian species of Feaellidae are assessed with a molecular analysis using mitochondrial (CO1) and nuclear (ITS2) data. These results confirm the morphological analysis that three previously undescribed species occur in the Pilbara bioregion, which are named and described: Feaella (Tetrafeaella) callani, sp. nov., F. (T.) linetteae, sp. nov. and F. (T.) tealei, sp. nov. The males of these three species, as well as males of F. anderseni Harvey and other unnamed species from the Kimberley region of north-western Australia, have a pair of enlarged, thick-walled bursa that are not found in other feaellids. Despite numerous environmental impact surveys for short-range endemic invertebrates in the Pilbara, very few specimens have been collected, presumably due to their relictual distributions, restricted habitat preferences and low densities. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:131F0587-F2EE-405F-BE5A-772F072D9915

Examination of museum specimens belonging to the cyphophthalmid Gondwanan family Pettalidae has rendered a collection of specimens placed in the new genus Karripurcellia. The genus includes three species, K.�peckorum, sp. nov., K. sierwaldae, sp. nov. and K. harveyi, sp. nov., from the Pemberton area in Western Australia. These are the first cyphophthalmid species found outside Queensland in Australia. Karripurcellia, gen. nov. is distinguished from other Australian pettalids by the lack of modifications in the anal plate, as well as the lack of the typical male anal glands of pettalids, sironids and the stylocellid genus Fangensis Rambla, 1994. Two of the species, K. peckorum, sp. nov. and K. sierwaldae, sp. nov., live sympatrically and have been collected in the same litter samples in one locality. The proposition of the new genus is accompanied by a cladistic analysis of all pettalid genera and most species within each genus, with the exception of the species-rich genus Rakaia Hirst, 1925. The cladistic analysis supports the monophyly of the Karripurcellia, gen. nov. species, but their sister-group relationships are unclear. However, the remaining Australian species cluster with the pettalids from New Zealand and South Africa, but not with Karripurcellia, sp. nov.

Amphipods within the family Chiltoniidae are an abundant yet taxonomically poorly known member of Australian freshwater habitats. With only four species known from Australia, the group is inadequately defined and marked by taxonomists as difficult to identify. Recent molecular analyses of chiltoniids from mound springs in South Australia detected several distinct species, prompting a morphological revision of material from the central and southern Lake Eyre region. Clear groups defined by unique combinations of morphological characters (focusing on uropodal, coxal, male gnathopod 2, and antennal morphology) were found that closely correlated with clades found in the molecular analyses. Arabunnachiltonia n. gen. is established for A. murphyi n. sp. from Strangways Springs in South Australia. Wangiannachiltonia n. gen. is established for W. guzikae n. sp. from Davenport Springs in South Australia. The chiltoniid genera are discussed and a key is presented to the known Australian species.

With new material available of most stages of many known Australian Paracnephia, including new species, it is now clear that certain segregates warrant assignment to new genera. This applies to Paracnephia gladiator Moulton & Adler, a Western Australia simuliid with numerous unique character states. The species is fully redescribed and assigned to Bunyipellum nov. gen. A diagnosis is provided and relationships discussed, as is historical biogeography. Bunyipellum appears to be more closely related to elements of the South American simuliid fauna than to any other Gondwanan Australian species.

The oldest representatives of the subfamilies Meligethinae (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and Brontinae (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) from Baltic amber and some evolutionary notes The paper describes Melipriopsis rasnitsyni gen. et sp. n. (Nitidulidae, Meligethinae) and Dendrobrontes popovi gen. et sp. n. (Silvanidae, Brontinae) from Baltic amber. The systematic position and phylogenetic significance of the new genera and species are discussed. A review of the fossils of the families Nitidulidae and Silvanidae is given. The genus Sinisilvana HONG, 2002, for which the family Sinisilvanidae HONG, 2002 was proposed, is considered as a genus with an unclear position within Silvanidae.

AbstractHersiliidae Thorell is a family of conspicuously long-legged spiders, characterized by extremely elongate posterior lateral spinnerets. To date, it includes 148 species distributed within seven genera, of which Tama Simon is the only one recorded in the Neotropical Region. Of the 23 known Tama species, 18 are exclusively Neotropical. In order to enhance the scientific knowledge on the family and its members this study presents a cladistic analysis and a taxonomic revision of the Neotropical and Nearctic hersilids. The cladistic analysis places the Neotropical and Neartic species in two separate clades, none of which are closely related to the genus Tama. Based on this result, Tama mexicana (O.P.-Cambridge) and T. forcipata (F.O.P.-Cambridge) are transferred to Neotama and three new genera are proposed to include the remaining species: Ypypuera n. gen. to include T. crucifera Vellard and T. vittata (Simon); Iviraiva n. gen. to include T. pachyura Mello-Leitão and T. argentina Mello-Leitão; and Yabisi n. gen to include T. habanensis Franganillo. Based on the taxonomic revision, eight synonymies are proposed: Tama crulsi Mello-Leitão, Tama micrura Mello-Leitão and T. occidentalis Schenkel with Ypypuera crucifera (Vellard); T. brasiliensis Piza and T. karinae Carcavallo with I. pachyura (Mello-Leitão); T. catamarcaensis Carcavallo and T. longipes Carcavallo with I. argentina (Mello-Leitão); and T. guianensis Mello-Leitão with Neotama mexicana (O.P.-Cambridge); three names are placed as nomina dubia: Tama americana (Simon), T. albigastra Mello-Leitão and T. sasaimae Mello-Leitão and four new species are described: Neotama cunhabebe, from São Paulo, Brazil, Neotama obatala, from Bahia, Brazil, Ypypuera esquisita, from Quevedo, Ecuador, and Yabisi guaba, from Pedernales, Dominican Republic. The family Hersiliidae, the genus Neotama and all three new genera, as well as all Neotropical and Nearctic species are redescribed and diagnosed and a identification key is presented.

AbstractThe increasing number of world-wide discoveries of subterranean amphipods, especially during the last two decades, has led to additions of numerous new taxa in the stygobiont family Bogidiellidae s. lat. To date, the family is composed of 23 genera and 11 subgenera, and approximately 110 described species. However, given the uneven quality of generic and subgeneric diagnoses in the literature, there is considerable confusion regarding the status of some of the taxa at these levels. Even the family itself lacks a clear definition. In order to gain a better knowledge of the phylogeny of this group, a cladistic analysis, employing both PAUP 3.0s and MacClade, was performed on the genera and subgenera currently assigned to the Bogidiellidae s. lat. Supported by the results of this analysis, the taxonomic structure of this group is completely revised above the species level. The revision excludes 5 genera from the family, all remaining subgenera are elevated to generic level. Four taxa are split, resulting in 5 new genera. The family Bogidiellidae now consists of 33 genera. Die wachsende Zahl weltweiter Neuentdeckungen von Grundwasser-Amphipoden, insbesondere wahrend der letzten zwei Jahrzehnte, erweiterte die Stygobiontenfamilie Bogidiellidae s. lat., um zahlreiche neue Taxa. Bis heute sind in der Familie etwa 110 beschriebene Arten in 23 Gattungen und 11 Untergattungen zusammengefasst. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Qualitat diagnostischer Beschreibungen herrscht allerdings erhebliche Verwirrung hinsichtlich des taxonomischen Status einiger Gruppen. Sogar die Definition der Familie selbst ist relativ undeutlich. Um neue Einsichten in die Phylogenie der Bogidielliden s. lat., zu erhalten, fuhrten wir eine kladistische Analyse der Gattungen und Untergattungen unter Verwendung der Computerprogramme PAUP 3.0s und MacClade durch. Die Resultate dieser Analyse dienten als hilfreiche Erganzung bei der umfassenden taxonomischen Revision der Gattungen und Untergattungen. Funf Gattungen wurden aus der Familie entfernt und alle Untergattungen zu Gattungen erhoben. Das Aufspalten von vier Taxa resultierte in 5 neuen Gattungen. Die Familie Bogidiellidae besteht somit aus 33 Gattungen.

The Pararchaeidae, a family of cryptic spiders known only from Australia and New Zealand, is revised. Six new genera: Anarchaea, gen. nov., Flavarchaea, gen. nov., Forstrarchaea, gen. nov., Nanarchaea, gen. nov., Ozarchaea, gen. nov., Westrarchaea, gen. nov., and 24 new species are described, 23 from mainland Australia and one from New Zealand. Anarchaea, gen. nov. from eastern Australia contains four species: A. corticola (Hickman, 1969), comb. nov. (type species), A. falcata, sp. nov., A. raveni, sp. nov. and A. robusta (Rix, 2005), comb. nov. Flavarchaea from eastern, southern and south-western Australia contains seven species: F. anzac, sp. nov., F. badja, sp. nov., F. barmah, sp. nov., F. hickmani (Rix, 2005), comb. nov., F. lofty, sp. nov., F. lulu (Rix, 2005), comb. nov. (type species) and F. stirlingensis, sp. nov. Forstrarchaea is represented only by the type species F. rubra (Forster, 1949), comb. nov. from New Zealand. Nanarchaea from eastern Australia contains two species: N. bryophila (Hickman, 1969), comb. nov. and N. binnaburra (Forster, 1955), comb. nov. (type species). Ozarchaea from Australia and New Zealand contains 16 species: O. bodalla, sp. nov., O. bondi, sp. nov., O. daviesae, sp. nov., O. forsteri, sp. nov., O. harveyi, sp. nov., O. janineae, sp. nov., O. ornata (Hickman, 1969), comb. nov. (type species), O. platnicki, sp. nov., O. saxicola (Hickman, 1969), comb. nov., O. spurgeon, sp. nov., O. stradbroke, sp. nov., O. valida, sp. nov., O. waldockae, sp. nov., O. werrikimbe, sp. nov., O. westraliensis, sp. nov. and O. wiangarie, sp. nov. Pararchaea Forster, 1955 is represented only by the type species P. alba Forster, 1955 from New Zealand. Westrarchaea, endemic to south-western Western Australia, contains three species: W. pusilla, sp. nov., W. sinuosa, sp. nov. (type species) and W. spinosa, sp. nov. A morphological cladistic analysis of the Pararchaeidae supported monophyly of the genera. Natural history information is summarised for each species where known, and the moulting behaviour, mating behaviour and egg sac of a pararchaeid species are described for the first time.

With the exception of polycopids, Mesozoic myodocopid ostracods are regarded as uncommon in the fossil record. They are known from a few localities in the Tethys, and most of them are considered to be pelagic forms. However, a relatively rich and taxonomically diverse material is derived from Hungarian sections; these represent various formations deposited during the Triassic to Cretaceous.The aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge of Mesozoic myodocopids and to provide new information concerning their classification and phylogenetic relations. This includes new occurrences of Triassic entomozoid Schallreuterizoe groosae Kozur, 2004, cylindroleberidid Triadocypris sp., cypridinid Palaeocypridina tulceaensis Sebe, 2013, Jurassic thaumatocyprid Pokornyopsis cf. bettenstaedti (Bartenstein, 1949) and P. feifeli (Triebel, 1941). The revision of the holotype of gigantic Triassic Triadogigantocypris balatonica Monostori, 1991 give new results concerning the valve structure and taxonomic position of the genus. Two new genera (Neorichterina n. gen. and Hungaroleberis n. gen.) and four new species (Neorichterina striata n. sp., Pokornyopsis csurgokutensis n. sp., Hungaroleberis retiferus n. sp. and Palaeocypridina goeroegae n. sp.) of the subclass Myodocopa are described. Moreover, most of the Albian to Cenomanian representatives of “Conchoecia” are newly classified as Entomozoidae (Neorichterina n. gen.), which allows to extend the range of the family up to the Cretaceous. A summary of the relevant assemblages present in Hungary will help to complement the existing, previously published literature on myodocopids, and also clarify details about the phylogenetic model of the group.

The deep sea of temperate south-eastern Australia appears to be a ‘hotspot’ for diversity and endemism of conoidean neogastropods of the family Raphitomidae. Following a series of expeditions in the region, a considerable amount of relevant DNA-suitable material has become available. A molecular phylogeny based on this material has facilitated the identification of diagnostic morphological characters, allowing the circumscription of monophyletic genera and the introduction of several new genus-level taxa. Both named and new genera are presently being investigated through integrative taxonomy, with the discovery of a significant number of undescribed species. As part of this ongoing investigation, our study focuses on the genera Famelica Bouchet & Warén, 1980, Glaciotomella Criscione, Hallan, Fedosov & Puillandre, 2020 and Rimosodaphnella Cossmann, 1914. We subjected a comprehensive mitochondrial DNA dataset of representative deep-sea raphitomids to the species delimitation methods ABGD and ASAP that recognised 18 and 15 primary species hypotheses (PSHs) respectively. Following additional evaluation of shell and radular features, and examination of geographic and bathymetric ranges, nine of these PSHs were converted to secondary species hypotheses (SSHs). Four SSHs (two in Famelica and two in Rimosodaphnella) were recognised as new, and formal descriptions are provided herein.
