The effects of cane girdling before budbreak on shoot growth, leaf area and carbohydrate content of Vitis vinifera L. Sauvignon Blanc grapevines

The influence of restricting available carbohydrates (CHOs) on shoot growth was studied by cane girdling field grown Vitis vinifera L. Sauvignon Blanc grapevines before budbreak. Canes were girdled 5, 10 or 20 cm from the terminal bud of the cane, and the shoot growth of the terminal bud was monitored over the course of a single growing season. A linear relationship was found between the initial rate of shoot growth and the amount of cane isolated by the girdle. A decrease in available CHOs during initial shoot growth appeared to inhibit the shoot’s ability to produce new vegetative nodes past the point of discontinuity, resulting in a decrease in total leaf area due to incomplete leaf expansion. The transition from the vine’s dependence on reserve CHOs to a net positive state appeared to occur when shoot growth reached a steady state. In the case of severe CHO restriction, no lateral growth occurred, suggesting the CHO status in the vine may play a role in lateral bud growth. The cross-sectional area of canes or shoots were shown to have a linear relationship to their CHO content, which allows for an estimation of the amount of CHOs required to obtain growth similar to the control treatment. Additionally, main shoot leaf area can be used to predict total CHO content in the shoot at harvest.

La producción y calidad de la uva para elaboración de vino, se modifican con las prácticas culturales que se realizan en el viñedo. La poda es una de las prácticas que buscan mejorar la calidad final de mostos y vinos. Con la investigación se buscó conocer el efecto de tres tipos de poda (corta, larga y mixta) en la evolución de los componentes de la calidad, durante la maduración de frutos de Vitis vinifera L. var. Sauvignon Blanc, en el municipio de Sutamarchán-Boyacá, Colombia. Se recolectaron, cada quince días, aleatoriamente 20 bayas, desde el inicio del envero, hasta la maduración, para determinar el comportamiento de los sólidos solubles totales (SST), acidez total titulable (ATT) e índice de madurez técnica (IMT). Con la poda larga se alcanzó el mayor contenido de azúcares (22,76ºBrix) y el más alto IMT (3,42), la acidez total titulable (ATT) disminuyó con el desarrollo del fruto, obteniéndose en el momento de la vendimia una acumulación de ácidos orgánicos de 6,88 g L-1. Los tratamientos no afectaron el contenido de SST; mas si hubo diferencias significativas entre ATT e IMT. La poda larga produjo los frutos con los valores más adecuados, de calidad (SST, ATT, IMT) requeridos para la elaboración de vinos tropicales de la variedad Sauvignon Blanc, en la localidad del estudio.

A trial was conducted during the 2005–2006 season in order to determine the effects of different leaf-to-fruit ratios on yield components and fruit composition in four Vitis vinifera L. cultivars. The treatments consisted of selecting shoots of four lengths (>1.3 m, 1.3–0.8 m, 0.8–0.4 m, and <0.4 m) with two crop levels (1–2 clusters/shoot), which allowed defining eight ratios. Berry composition and yield components were measured. The treatments affected the accumulation of soluble solids in “Sauvignon blanc”, “Cabernet Sauvignon”, and “Syrah”, delaying it as the ratio decreased. All yield components were affected in “Sauvignon blanc”, while bunch weight and the number of berries per bunch were altered without a clear trend. None of the yield components were affected in “Cabernet Sauvignon”, while the lowest ratio presented the lowest number of berries per bunch in “Syrah”. Total polyphenol index (TPI) was affected in “Carmenère” without a clear trend. A highly significant correlation was found between shoot length and leaf area in all studied cultivars. As the ratio increased, the shoot lignification increased in “Sauvignon blanc”. However, studies must be conducted during more seasons to establish better conclusions about the effects of leaf-to-fruit ratios on yield and fruit composition.

‘Lemberger’ wine grape response to fall application of selected herbicides applied at simulated drift rates was studied in 1992 and 1993. Chlorsulfuron, thifensulfuron, 2,4-D, glyphosate, bromoxynil, and 2,4-D plus glyphosate were applied at 1/100, 1/33, 1/10, and 1/3 of a selected maximum rate for use in wheat or fallow. All herbicides, except bromoxynil and thifensufluron, caused symptoms on grapevines at the highest rate during the spring following fall application. The most severe symptoms were caused by 2,4-D and 2,4-D plus glyphosate, whereas the least symptoms were caused by chlorsulfuron and glyphosate. The severity of symptoms increased and shoot growth, leaf area, internode length, and dry cane weight decreased as the rates of 2,4-D and 2,4-D plus glyphosate increased. Chlorsulfuron and glyphosate reduced the growth of grapevines only when applied at the highest rate during the fall. The data show that exposure of wine grapes to 2,4-D or 2,4-D plus glyphosate during the fall can adversely affect the growth of grapevines the following spring.

Hailstorms are typically localized events, and very little is known about their effect on crops. The objective of this study was to examine the physiological and vine performance responses to natural hail, registered four weeks after full bloom, of field-grown Thompson seedless (Vitis vinifera L.) grapevines, one of the most important table grape varieties cultivated in Greece and especially in the Corinthian region in northeastern Peloponnese. Leaf gas exchange, vegetative growth, vine balance indices, cane wood reserves, yield components, and fruit chemical composition were recorded from hail-damaged vines and compared with control vines. Visibly, the extent of the hailstorm damage was great enough to injure or remove leaves as well as cause partial stem bruising and partial injury or total cracking of berries. Our results indicated that natural hail did not affect leaf photosynthesis, berry weight, total acidity, and cane wood reserves but significantly reduced the total leaf area, yield, and the total phenolics of berries at harvest. At the same time, hail-damaged vines increased the leaf area of lateral canes and presented a higher total soluble solid (TSS) accumulation, while no effect on the next year’s fertility was registered. The present work is the first attempt to enhance our understanding of the vegetative yield, berry quality, and physiological responses of grapevines to natural hail, which is an extreme and complex natural phenomenon that is likely to increase due to climate change.
