The response of 9-month-old Angus steers, grazing sandplain lupins during summer and autumn and fed oat and oat plus urea supplements, or grazing hay made from the lupins and fed no supplement, was studied in two experiments. In the first experiment there were 3.3 t DM/ha present at the start of grazing. Average daily weight changes over 84 days were -0.548, -0.274 and 0.333 kg/day (P<0.05) for steers fed 0, 1 and 2 kg oats/steer.day respectively. The steers grazing lupin hay averaged -0.417 kg/day. There were 8.4 t DM/ha present at the start of the second experiment and the daily weight changes by steers fed 0, 2 and 6 kg oats plus urea/head.day were - 0.012, 0.524 and 0.952 kg/day (P<0.05), respectively. The steers grazing lupin hay gained 0.215 kg/day. No obvious clinical signs of lupinosis were observed in either experiment. However, in the first experiment the lupins were toxic, liver damage occurred and lupinosis may have contributed to the lower growth rates. In both experiments steers not fed a supplement made compensatory weight gains during winter and spring, when all steers were run together on mixed clover-grass pasture.

ABSTRACTSoay ewes were mated to a Soay or a Dorset Down ram. Live-weight changes of the ewes, birth weights, growth rates and carcass production of the lambs were recorded, and the food consumption of the ewes and lambs was measured. The use of the Dorset Down ram resulted in significantly heavier birth weights, higher growth rates and heavier carcasses. Under conditions of good nutrition the Soay ewes proved to be capable of carrying very high foetal burdens and it was estimated, from lamb live-weight gains, that they produced a large quantity of milk, relative to their size, particularly when crossed with the Dorset Down ram.

Weaned lambs when growing to hoggets on old pasture acotype ryegrass, had shown significantly lower weight gains immediately prior to clinical signs of FIGS, than those on Ruanui ryegrass pasture. The difference was not correlated to quantity of harbaga on offer. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay of plant tissue showed higher concentration of Lolium endophyte in that period than prior to subsequent periods. The aim of this study was to study the effect of combined MMSC and HSC transplantation on liver regeneration under conditions of toxic carbon tetrachloride damage. Materials and methods. The study was performed on white male mice with toxic liver damage by intraperitoneal administration of carbon tetrachloride at a dose of 50 µl per mouse once. An hour after modeling liver damage, placental MMSCs and HSCs were administered intravenously at a dose of 4 million cells/kg and 330 thousand cells/kg, respectively, suspended in 0.2 ml of 0.9% NaCl solution. Control group animals were given 0.9% NaCl solution-0.2 ml intravenously. On days 1, 3, and 7 after cell transplantation, changes in inflammatory activity in the liver were evaluated, and mitotic and apoptotic indices were determined. On the 7th day after the introduction of cells, the activity of DNA repair enzymes of the PARP family was analyzed. Results. Combined MMSC and HSC transplantation leads to a decrease in the index of inflammatory activity in the liver due to a decrease in necrosis, hepatocyte dystrophy, and a decrease in infiltration. As a result of the study, an increase in the activity of PARP repair enzymes was found, which led to a decrease in programmed cell death. Also, cotransplantation of MMSCs and HSCs was accompanied by increased mitotic activity of hepatocytes. Conclusion. Cotransplantation of MMSCs and HSCs under conditions of toxic liver damage reduces the inflammatory response, stimulates the mitotic activity of hepatocytes, and increases the activity of enzymes of the DNA repair system. Activation of the liver's reparative system, in turn, reduces the programmed death of hepatocytes.

Ten experiments were carried out to examine some of the effects of lice infestation on heifers grazing on six commercial properties in the high rainfall areas of Victoria. In all experiments, famphur, a pour-on lousicide, effectively controlled lice populations (main species Linognathus vituli). Lice infestation was associated with lower growth rates in only two experiments. Significant correlations between lice infestation and liveweight gain of untreated heifers were found in three of ten experiments, but infestation accounted for only 23-30% of the variation in liveweight gain. The results support other studies conducted in Western Victoria, and the need for routine whole herd treatment against lice is questioned.

SUMMARY1. Scottish Half-bred ewes carrying twin foetuses were fed individually to make live-weight gains in the last six weeks of pregnancy of (1) 20%, (2) 10% and (3) 0% of their live weight in week 14 of pregnancy. In lactation the ewes were fed ad libitum. The lambs were removed 12 to 16 hr after parturition and the ewes were machine-milked twice daily for the first six weeks of lactation.2. Total birth weights per ewe of twin lambs from the treatments were (1) 10·10 kg, (2) 9·44 kg and (3) 8·18 kg and differed significantly.3. The level and pattern of voluntary intake in lactation did not differ significantly between the treatments. Total dry-matter intakes in the six weeks of lactation were (1) 121·9 kg (2) 105·9 kg and (3) 109·5 kg.4. The pregnancy treatments affected the level of milk production and the shape of lactation curves. The total yields in the first six weeks of lactation were (1) 58·8 kg, (2) 43·5 kg and (3) 26·9 kg. Higher contents of fat and protein and the lower content of lactose in the milk from treatment-3 ewes on days 1 and 3 of lactation indicated a slower onset of lactation in these ewes. Between days 7 and 35 of lactation the contents of fat and SNF were lowest on treatment 3 but the differences were not significant.5. The live-weight changes in lactation, which were in inverse order to the gains in late pregnancy, were (1) 3·4 kg, (2) 5·5 kg and (3) 9·5 kg.

The objective is to study the incidence of metabolic disorders and effects of obese genes in patients after acute and chronic intoxication with pesticides and to justify methods for evaluating their severity to optimize differentiated therapy and prevention. Material and methods. In 104 agricultural workers after acute poisoning with 2,4-D based herbicides, organophosphorus pesticides and synthetic pyrethroids, and 66 patients with chronic intoxication with pesticides in the initial period and a year later, parameters of oxidative stress, carbohydrate and fat metabolism were studied, depending on the development of toxic liver damage syndrome. In patients after acute poisoning with 2,4-D-based herbicides, imbalance of fatty tissue hormones — leptin, resistin, adiponectin and TNF-α — has also been studied. Conclusion. Dynamic observation has made it possible to establish that in those who have had acute and chronic intoxication with pesticides with toxic liver damage syndrome, metabolic disorders and effects of obese genes develop as the progression of hepatosteatosis develops. The increased level of fatty tissue hormones in the blood — leptin, resistin and TNF-α, at the background of a slight decrease in adiponectin levels in patients who have had poisoning with 2,4-D-based herbicides, allows predicting an increased risk of a progressive course of steatohepatosis and obesity, prevention of which is based on the long-term use of metformin and statins. Objective. To evaluate the activity of pyruvate kinase (PK) isoforms in normal conditions, in toxic damage of the liver and during its regeneration.Materials and methods. An experimental study was carried out on 45 Wistar rats. Toxic liver damage was induced by the intraperitoneal administration of carbon tetrachloride. Mechanical damage was simulated by the surgical resection of the liver. The levels of PK isoforms R/L and M in the blood serum and liver tissue of the laboratory animals were measured with an ELISA test.Results. It has been found that the level of PK isoform M signifcantly increases in chronic toxic liver damage, which may indicate the activation of the processes of liver cell proliferation in response to the damaging effect of hepatotoxin (Mann-Whitney U Test: Z = 2.143; p = 0.032). After liver resection, the level of PK R/L, which characterizes the activation of glycolysis, increased and the level of pyruvate kinase M increased signifcantly, which reflected the processes of reparative regeneration in the liver.Conclusion. The serum level of PK isoforms may be used as a laboratory criterion for the activity of reparative regeneration processes, which can be used to evaluate the reparative potential of the liver in case of toxic or mechanical damage, as well as in chronic diffuse diseases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal efficacy of Kocuria marina (BMKo1) derived Lactic acid against Epidermophyton floccosum (MTCC-613) infections induced on male Swiss Albino mice model (Mus musculus).  For this purpose, the isolated strain was subjected to ‘flask fermentation’ and the Lactic acid produced as fermentation product, was quantified and analysed. Prior to preclinical test, healthy mice models of approximately 8 weeks old and 25-30 gm (weight) were subjected to intra-dermal administration for a period of 15 days to test for toxicity. Mortality, clinical signs, body weight changes were continually monitored. Then the mouse models were inoculated with 100 µl/ml (V/V) of E. floccosum (MTCC-613) spore suspensions following ‘Excision model’. After induction of the infection, the symptomatic mice groups were subjected to topical application of Kocuria lactic acid cream based formulation at a concentration of 1µl/ml (V/V). The naked eye observations were made on the infected lesions till the absolute deduction of infection of excised skin surfaces. The degrees of deduction of infection were converted into scores and the percentages (%) of deduction of infection were calculated and the average value was derived. There were inclusion of positive control (Fluconazole) and negative control (group with infection induced excision, but without any drug application) mice groups for the sake of comparison. Further, with absolute deduction of infection score observed in mice group, applied with Kocuria derived Lactic acid was akin to Fluconazole activity. However, the infection induced mice group was found to be with substantial increase of degree of infection. This study have curtain raised about the anti Epidermophyton infection activity of a cream based  Cell free Lactic acid derived from a non pathogenic strain of Kocuria marina on mouse models. Abstract Background The detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is challenging, particularly in post-mortem human tissues. However, there is increasing evidence for viral SARS-CoV-2 manifestation in non-respiratory tissues. In this context, it is a current matter of debate, whether SARS-CoV-2 shows hepatotropism. Case presentation Here, we report a case of an 88-year-old women with massive SARS-CoV-2 viremia, severe jaundice and clinical signs of an acute hepatitis, who died within a few days from an acute liver failure without showing any clinical signs of pneumonia. Autopsy revealed a severe chronic and acute liver damage with bile duct infestation by SARS-CoV-2 that was accompanied by higher expressions of angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2), Cathepsin L and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2). Conclusion Our findings indicate an enhanced biliary susceptibility to viral infection with SARS-CoV-2, that might have resulted from pre-existing severe liver damage. Furthermore, our findings emphasize the differential diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated liver failure in the clinical setting of an inexplicable jaundice.

The aim of this study was to identify the effect of zinc-enriched diet fed to goats and their kids on the number of Coccidia oocysts shed by kids, on clinical signs of coccidiosis, weight gains, and kids’ blood plasma concentration of zinc. A total of 22 goat kids were divided into 4 groups of 5 or 6 animals. Goats and kids from the control group did not receive any additional zinc, the second group was supplemented with inorganic zinc (zinc oxide), the third group was given zinc lactate, and the fourth group received chelated zinc. Samples of kids’ faeces were taken weekly from 3 to 9 weeks of their age (a total of 7 samples were taken). Samples of faeces were examined by a quantitative method to detect the number of oocysts. Kids were weighed weekly and their blood was taken in order to determine zinc concentrations in blood plasma. Animals from the group supplemented with zinc chelate and zinc lactate shed a significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower number of oocysts (13.4% and 11.9%, respectively) compared to the number of oocyst shed by control and zinc oxide supplemented groups (25% and 49.7%, respectively). Shedding of oocysts was not accompanied by clinical symptoms of coccidiosis in any of the groups. Kids supplemented with zinc chelate showed significantly highest weight gains and blood plasma concentration of zinc (p ≤ 0.05) as compared to control and inorganic zinc supplemented groups. Organic zinc is to be recommended to be used as a prophylaxis against coccidiosis in goat kids.
