Nodulation studies on chickpea (Cicer arietinum)

Glasshouse and field experiments were conducted with chickpea (Cicer arietinum) rhizobia to determine the inoculation requirements of this highly Rhizobium-specific legume. There did not appear to be any host-strain specificity within the species. There was a strong nodulation response to inoculation with four strains (unaffected by time of sowing) even at a level of inoculant application below normal. In some field experiments, nodulation responses were not reflected in improved foliage dry matter production or seed yield. However, the correlations between degree of nodulation and plant growth and seed yield were significant. There was a distinct advantage in using solid inoculant applied in the row with the seed instead of conventional seed inoculation when fungicide-treated chickpea was being sown. Two strains, CB1189 and CC1192, were considered suitable for inoculants.

Sixteen field experiments were conducted to assess whether inoculant applied as a liquid or in solid form separately from the seed but into the seed bed could be used as a substitute for conventional methods of legume seed inoculation. The experiments were done over a period of 8 years, on several soil types, with both crop and pasture legumes. Criteria used to measure response included success of the applied strain of rhizobia in forming nodules, quality of nodulation, seedling establishment, foliage dry matter production, and seed yield. Under favourable conditions for sowing, solid and liquid inoculants were generally as good as seed inoculation at similar total rates of application in promoting root nodulation and plant growth. However, when conditions were unfavourable for survival of rhizobia, e.g. when seed was dusted with toxic fungicide or when germination was delayed owing to environmental circumstances, solid or liquid inoculant gave better nodulation and very often better plant growth and seed yield than seed inoculation. The implications of these findings on alternatives to conventional seed inoculation and how they might be applied to agricultural practice are discussed.

Field experiments were conducted in Saskatchewan using chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) to evaluate fall-applied granular rhizobial inoculant. Seed yield and percentage N derived from fixation generally did not differ between granular inoculant applied in the fall (FG) and seed applied peat-based powder (SP). Results suggest that FG applications may be an alternative to spring seed inoculation for chickpea. Key words: Chickpea, rhizobial inoculant, granular inoculant, nodulation, N2 fixation

SUMMARYField experiments conducted in two localities in two growing seasons on the effect of inoculating haricot bean showed that a local strain of Rhizobium significantly improved nodulation and usually increased the nitrogen content of plants. In three out of four experiments, increases in seed yield were obtained ranging from 20–145 Per cent (significant in two cases). Inoculation was better than 43 kg. N/ha. of combined nitrogen but not better than 86 kg. N. Soil inoculation gave better early nodulation than seed inoculation, but the difference diminished in the later stages of plant growth.

The response of Vicia sativa (cvv. Languedoc, Blanchefleur and Morava) and V. benghalensis (cv. Barloo) seed yield to seeding rate was examined in 9 field experiments across 2 years in south-western Australia. There were 2 types of field experiments: seeding rate (20, 40, 60, 100 and 140 kg/ha) × cultivar (Languedoc, Blanchefleur, and Morava or Barloo), and time of sowing (2 times of sowing of either Languedoc or Blanchefleur) × seeding rate (5,�7.5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha).A target density of 40 plants/m2 gave 'optimum' seed yield of vetch in south-western Australia. In high yielding situations, with a yield potential above 1.5 t/ha, the 'optimum' plant density for the early flowering cultivar Languedoc (85–97 days to 50% flowering) was increased to 60 plants/m2. The later flowering cultivar Blanchefleur (95–106 days to 50% flowering) had an optimum plant density of 33 plants/m2 at all sites, regardless of fitted maximum seed yield. Plant density in the range 31–38 plants/m2 was found to be adequate for dry matter production at maturity of Languedoc and Blanchefleur. For the remaining cultivars Barloo and Morava we were unable to determine an average optimum density for either dry matter or seed yield due to insufficient and/or inconsistent data.

Field experiments were conducted during rabi (winter) seasons of 2010-11 and 2011-12 at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur to study the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus on growth, dry matter production and yield of French bean. A randomized complete block design was followed with 10 combinations of N (0,50, 100, 150 and 200) and P (0,22, 33, 44 and 55) kg ha-1 along with a blanket dose of control. All the treatments showed the maximum leaf area index (LAI) at 65 days after sowing (DAS). All the treatments showed the maximum total dry matter production, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate at harvest and at 55-65 DAS, respectively in both the years. LAI, dry matter production, CGR, NAR and seed yield significantly increased with the increase in nitrogen and phosphorus level upto 150 kg N and 44 P kg ha-1 , respectively. Similar trend was followed in maximum number of pods (9.45) and seed yield (1563.33 kg ha-1). The treatment comprises with 150 kg N and 44 P Kg ha-1 gave the highest seed yield which was 51.40 and 54.30 % higher than control plots.Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 41(4): 759-772, December 2016

Experiments with or without Bradyrhizobium was carried out with five mungbean varieties at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm during kharif-I 2001 and kharif-I 2002 seasons to observe nodulation, biomass production and yield of mungbean. Significant influences of the mungbean varieties were observed on nodulation, biomass production and yield. BARI Mung-2 produced the highest nodule number, nodule weight, shoot weight, seed yield (1.03 t/ha in 2001 and 0.78 t/ha in 2002) and stover yield (2.24 t/ha in 2001 and 2.01 t/ha in 2002). Application of Bradyrhizobium inoculant produced significant effect on nodulation, shoot dry weight, seed and stover yields in both trials conducted in two consecutive years. Seed inoculation significantly increased seed (0.98 t/ha in 2001, 27% increase over control and 0.75 t/ha in 2002, 29% increase over control) and stover (2.31 t/ha in 2001 and 2.04 t/ha in 2002) yields of mungbean. Inoculated BARI Mung-2 produced the highest nodulation, dry matter production, seed and stover yields. Considering nodulation, biomass production and seed and yields, BARI Mung-2 was found as the best variety among the five. BARI Mung-5 produced the second highest seed yield followed by BARI Mung-4 and BINA Mung-2, and the lowest seed yield was observed in Barisal local. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate competitive effects of johnsongrass and sicklepod on growth and yield of irrigated and nonirrigated soybeans. Johnsongrass reduced soybean growth early in the growing season. Sicklepod was competitive all season, but competitiveness was greatest during the soybean reproductive stage. Soybean yields were reduced 31% by sicklepod, 14% by johnsongrass, and 36% by both weeds growing together. Nonirrigated soybeans yielded less than irrigated, but percent yield reductions were similar. Johnsongrass dry matter production and seed yield were reduced more than sicklepod by soybean interference. Soybean and sicklepod interference reduced johnsongrass seed production 73 to 95%. Johnsongrass produced 245 to 1238 seeds per plant when interfering with soybeans and sicklepod. Sicklepod seeds per plant were reduced 6 to 31% by johnsongrass interference and 47 to 75% by soybeans and soybeans plus johnsongrass.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of carbofuran on the establishment and subsequent yields of sod-seeded legumes. The effects of carbofuran on plant growth, nodulation and nitrogen fixation of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) in non-sterilized and sterilized soil were evaluated in growth cabinet experiments. In the field experiments carbofuran, applied immediately after seeding, had a positive effect on plant stand and seedling dry matter production of birdsfoot trefoil and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. ssp. falcata L.) in the weeks following seeding. In the first production years of these field trials, there was a trend for the total and legume yields to be higher in the carbofuran plots than where carbofuran was not used. In either growth cabinet experiment, however, shoot growth was not affected by carbofuran but a reduction in the number of plants in the non-sterilized and carbofuran pots occurred. A toxic effect of carbofuran on seedlings may have been involved. No correlation between soil nematode numbers and plant stand or dry matter production was found in either field or growth cabinet experiments. In the growth cabinet experiments, carbofuran did not affect the number of nodules but improved nitrogen fixation in sterilized pots of exp. B. Carbofuran increased the dry weight of individual nodules in the sterilized pots of exp. A but a decrease was observed in exp. B. These effects of carbofuran on the dry weight of individual nodules and specific nodule activity were also observed in the nematode-free environment created by sterilization. In view of these responses in sterile soil, it was suggested that the effect of carbofuran was not as a nematicide but rather a positive physiological effect on the plant component of the plant-rhizobium system.Key words: Carbofuran, establishment, legumes, nitrogen fixation, nematodes

An experiment was conducted during <italic>rabi</italic> season of 2010-12 to study the response of chickpea varieties to nutrients levels on a calcareous vertisols. The experiment comprised of four varieties i.e., NBeG-3, NBeG-28, JG-11 and KAK-2 and with four nitrogen levels i.e., 0, 20, 30 and 40 kg/ha laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications. Among the varieties significantly higher dry matter production at harvest was recorded with JG-11 while it was lowest with KAK-2. More number of pods per plant and seed yield were recorded with JG-11 followed by NBeG-3 and NBeG-28, while lowest with KAK-2. Interaction effect among the different varieties and nitrogen levels was non significant with yield attributes. Significantly higher seed yield was recorded with JG-11 @ 40 kg of N/ha but was at par with N @ 20 and 30 kg /ha, followed by NBeG-3 and NBeG-28.

SUMMARYField experiments made for 2 years under semi-arid unirrigated conditions of north India examined the physiological factors affecting the growth and yield of sorghum when intercropped with groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), mung (Vigna radiata) or cow pea (V. unguiculata). Dry-matter production and leaf area index of sorghum were increased when intercropped with any of the legumes. The mixture advantage was reflected in delaying the senescence of sorghum leaves. Maximum grain and stover yields of sorghum were obtained in a mixture with mung or cow pea. The higher seed yield resulted from more seeds per panicle and greater panicle and 1000-grain weight.
