Two groups of five medium Wool Peppin Merino rams were individually penned in an animal house for 18 months. During this time the normal seasonal pattern of changes in day length was reversed for one group of rams (treatment). The control group of rams received normal daylight at Trangie (32S). From late September 1960, semen was collected once every 14 days from all rams by electro-ejaculation and semen quality was assessed. Significant treatment X months of year interactions found for most semen characteristics. The semen of treated rams had a lower pH during October 1960, and a higher proportion of normal sperm and number of sperm per ejaculate during November 1960, than the semen of control rams. During the period February to June 1961 the semen of treated rams was of a lower quality than the semen of control rams. During November- December 1961 and January to March 1963, the semen of treated rams had a significantly lower proportion of live sperm (P<0.005) than the semen of control rams. From these results it was not possible to determine if the daily photoperiod exerted a direct or indirect effect on the semen quality of Merino rams.

Objective: There are two reasons could cause male infertility: the first is lack of sperm (including olygospermia and azoospermia), the second is the abnormality in sperm quality or semen quality. The question is: which are the quality of sperm and semen of olygospermia and azoospermia person. Material and Method: Using case - control method, we analysis 68 semen samples of olygospermia, azoospermia person and 51 semen samples from control person. Results: (i) In olygospermia and azoospermia person: the percentage of sperm with normal volume (> 2 ml) was 37.93%, normal pH was 89,6%, normal viscosity was 46.55%. These indicators in control group as follow: 78.43%, 100%, and 84.31%; (ii) 100% olygospermia person have low rate of sperm mobility and normal sperm morphology. Discussion: Most of cases with olygospermia and azoospermia have quality abnormaly of semen. Conclusion: patients with numberal abnormality showed usually quality abnormaly of semen.

One group of 11 medium wool Peppin Merino rams was kept in short wool during summer 1960-61 (treatment). A second group remained unshorn during this period (control). Semen was collected from all rams at 14-day intervals during the summer period, October 1960 until March 1961, and from control rams until 243 March 1962. Both groups of rams had semen of similar and high quality during summer 1960-61. In the control group there was significant monthly variation for all semen characteristics studied but semen quality remained generally high. Significant differences were found between individual rams for all semen characteristics studied, some rams having markedly degenerate semen during the summer periods.

Abstract Thirty clinically healthy dogs with poor semen quality were used in the study. Fifteen dogs were supplemented daily with selenium (0.6 mg/kg organic selenium from yeast) and vitamin E (5 mg/kg) per os for 60 d. The control group (15 dogs) was not supplemented. Semen was collected from all dogs by manual manipulation on days 0, 30, 60, and 90. The sperm concentration and motility parameters were evaluated with a Hamilton Thorne sperm analyser, version IVOS 12.3. For the assessment of sperm morphology, Diff-Quik stain was used. The percentage of live and dead spermatozoa was estimated on dried smears stained with eosin-nigrosin. The concentration of spermatozoa, most motility parameters determined (PMOT, VSL, VCL, ALH, BCF, RAPID, MEDIUM, SLOW, and STATIC), and the percentage of spermatozoa morphologically normal and live increased significantly (P < 0.05) after 60 d of supplementation. In the control group, there were no changes in motility parameters while the concentration and total sperm count decreased over the duration of the study. In conclusion, supplementation with selenium and vitamin E for 60 d can improve the quality of semen in dogs with lowered fertility.

Semen quality of cocks is of utmost importance in reproduction. Breeding method, breed, strain and genetic constitution are the major components of the genetic factors capable of affecting the semen quality of cocks. This research seeks to determine the effect of genotype on the semen quality traits of 272 F crossbred cocks produced at day-old by main and 1 reciprocal crossbreeding of 69 Isa Brown and local frizzle feathered, naked neck and normal feathered chickens. The genotypes of the cocks were Isa Brow x frizzle feathered main cross (IBxF), Isa Brown x naked neck main cross (IBxNa), Isa Brown x normal feathered main cross (IBxN), frizzle feathered x Isa Brown reciprocal cross (FxIB), naked neck x Isa Brown reciprocal cross (NaxIB) and normal feathered x Isa Brown reciprocal cross (NxIB). At 36-40 weeks of age, semen was extracted from the cocks by abdominal  massage technique and used to evaluate semen volume (SV), sperm motility (SM), sperm concentration (SC) and live sperm (LS) at weekly intervals. Data obtained from the evaluation were subjected to analysisof variance and tested at 5% level of probability. Genotypes differed significantly (P <0.05) in SC at 37-40 weeks and in SM and LS at all ages. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in SV. Regardless of genotype and age, the mean SV, SM, SC and LS ranged from 0.31±0.02 to 0.24±0.01ml, 71.84±1.33 to 58.75±2.16 %, 3.22±0.02 to2.92±0.02 x109/ml and 71.91±1.37 %, respectively. The NxIB and IBxNa genotypes produced largest numericalsemen volume at 37 and 39 weeks of age respectively. Whereas SC and LS were significantly highest for IBxF and IBxN respectively at week 37, SM was so for IBxN at all ages. Further, the LS of IBxN genotype was significantly highest at 36-38 and 40 weeks of age. The exotic Isa Brown and normal feathered main cross cocks exhibited the best semen quality traits among all genotypes studied and should be selected for improvement of the reproductive characteristics of cocks.

SEMEN QUALITY OF LIMOUSIN AND SIMMENTAL BULLS MAINTAINED IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PENS AT THE INSTITUTION OF LEMBANG ARTIFICIAL. The intensive maintenance of bulls included animal house and pens protecting animals against sunlight, cool effect, rain, high speed of win and other predators. Objective of this study was to evaluate effects of single bull in a pen (SB) and double bulls in a pen (DB) on semen quality of Limousin and Simmental bulls at the Institution of Lembang Artificial Insemination in West Java. Primer and secondary data of both bulls reproduction were used in this study and analyzed by t test method. Results showed that average volume of semen in both bulls of Limousin and Simmental under SB (9.54 ± 2.19 mL/ejaculation) was significantly higher of 7.67 percents than those of bulls under DB (8.86 ± 1.79 mL/ejaculation). The average of percentage of spermatozoa motility in both bulls of Limousin and Simmental under DB (71.00 ± 2.67) was not significantly differ with those of bulls under SB (70.10 ± 2.37). The average of spermatozoa mass movement in both bulls of Limousin and Simmental under SB (1.84 ± 0.37) was significantly more aggressive of 5.43 percents than those of bulls under DB (1.94 ± 0.24). Finally, the average of pH of semen in both bulls of Limousin and Simmental under SB (6.66 ± 0.11) was not significantly differ with those of bulls under DB (6.64 ± 0.10). Correlation between reproduction variables of both Limousinand Simmental bulls in SB and DB was not correlated between one and another variables indicated by correlation values ranging from -0.29 to 0.18. Based of the result of study can be concluded that semen quality of Limousin and Simental in single pen was better than that in double pens. The correlations among reproductive veriables of Limousin and Simmental in both sigle and double pens had no correlation between one and another variable. Keyword: Type of Pen, Semen Quality, Simmental Bull, Limousin Bull.

Abstract Background Recently, researchers have focused on the use of natural antioxidants to improve semen quality as a key element for successful artificial insemination. In this context the first aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity and composition (minerals, vitamins, and sugars) of Opuntia ficus-indica cladode ethanolic extract (ETHEX). A further purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of ETHEX supplementation on the quality of liquid ram semen extended with skim milk (SM) at 5°C. The antioxidant activity of ETHEX was studied using DPPH• assay. The mineral composition and the sugar and vitamin contents of ETHEX were determined using an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and HPLC-DAD-RID analytical instruments. As a second part, semen was collected from five Boujaâd rams with an artificial vagina. The ejaculates with more than 70 % motility were pooled, extended with skim milk (SM) extender without (control) or supplemented with 1–8 % of ETHEX (37°C; 0.8 × 109 sperm/mL). Sperm quality parameters were assessed at 8, 24, 48 and 72 h. Results The results showed that ETHEX had a higher antioxidant activity compared to those of ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Furthermore, ETHEX contains a considerable amount of minerals, vitamins, and sugars. The inclusion of 1 or 2 % ETHEX in SM increased the sperm motility, viability, membrane integrity and decreased the abnormality, spontaneous and catalyzed lipids peroxidation (P < 0.05) up to 72 h. In addition, semen diluted with 1 and 2 % ETHEX decreased the level of DNA fragmentation compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusions In conclusion the ETHEX could be recommended to improve the quality of liquid ram spermatozoa. However, its effects on sperm physiology and artificial insemination should be further studied.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the scientific evidence pertaining to the effectiveness of high-pull headgear in growing Class II subjects. METHODS: A literature survey was performed by electronic database search. The survey covered the period from January 1966 to December 2008 and used Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Articles were initially selected based on their titles and abstracts; the full articles were then retrieved. The inclusion criteria included growing subjects between 8 to 15 years of age, Class II malocclusion treatment with high-pull headgear, and a control group with Class II malocclusion. References from selected articles were hand-searched for additional publications. Selected studies were evaluated methodologically. RESULTS: Four articles were selected; none were randomized controlled trials. All of the articles clearly formulated their objectives and used appropriate measures. The studies showed that high-pull headgear treatment improves skeletal and dental relationship, distal displacement of the maxilla, vertical eruption control and upper molars distalization. One of the studies showed a slight clockwise rotation of the palatal plane; the others showed no significant treatment effect. The mandible was not affected by the treatment. CONCLUSION: While there is still a lack of strong evidence demonstrating the effects of high-pull headgear with a splint, other studies indicate that the AP relations improve due to distalization of the maxilla and upper molars, with little or no treatment effects in the mandible. Greater attention to the design should be given to improve the quality of such trials.

This study was undertaken to explore the adding effect of manganese chloride (MnCl2), co-enzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) as well as α-lipoic acid to Tris extender on Freeze ability of Holstein bulls’ semen. This study was carried out at the department of artificial insemination at the Directorate of Animal Resource, Ministry of Agriculture in Abu-Ghraib, Baghdad for the duration from October\ 2013 to Jun\ 2014, including three experiments. Seven Holstein bulls of 3.5-4 years old were used in this study. Semen was collected via artificial vagina by one ejaculate/ bull/ week. The assessments were conducted for fresh semen, which was later pooled, equally divided for various treatments within each experiment, using Tris extender. In the first experiment, pooled semen was divided into three groups. First group was diluted with Tris only. Manganese chloride was added to Tris extender (0.7 mM) in the 2nd group while in 3rd group (0.9 mM) of the Manganese chloride was used. In the second experiment, semen was divided equally into three groups. The first group was considered as a control group diluted with Tris only. Co-enzyme Q10 was added to 2nd (0.2 mM) and 3rd groups (0.5 mM) treatments respectively. In the third experiment, semen was divided into three groups. The first group was diluted with Tris only (control group). While the 2nd and 3rd groups were added 0.5 and 1.0 mM α-lipoic acid respectively. The effect of these additions on Holstein bulls semen quality was studied during different periods (48 hours, one, two and three months post cryopreservation) for three experiments. The results revealed that the addition two levels of the MnCl2 (2nd and 3rd, experiment 1), Co- Q10  (2nd and 3rd, experiment 2) and α- lipoic acid (2nd and 3rd experiment 3) led to significant increases freezability as compared with control groups during all the experiment periods. In conclusion, the addition of MnCl2, Co-Q10 and α-lipoic acid led to improved post-cryopreservation semen quality of Holstein bulls. This will in turn enhance fertility rate of artificially-inseminated cows and owners economic income consequently.

Background: Bio-acoustic features of animal’s voice can provide meaningful information about their biological and physical characteristics. The present study was conducted to get indicators of age from voice analysis and explore the relationship between voice features and seminal parameters in Sahiwal bulls. Methods: Voice samples were collected from healthy bulls (n=20), maintained at ICAR-NDRI, Karnal. Bulls were classified into two groups i.e. young bulls and adult bulls. The voice signals were analyzed by Adobe Premium software and acoustic features were extracted by using PRAAT software. Result: The mean of acoustic features viz. call duration (sec), mean intensity (dB), total energy (P2S), amplitude (P), pitch (Hz), unvoiced frame (%), jitter (%), bandwidth (Hz) mean N/H ratio (%) have been found significantly different while mean H/N ratio (dB), shimmer (%) and pulses were not found statistically (P greater than 0.05) different between adult and young bulls. The seminal parameters viz mass activity (0-5 scale), individual progressive motility (%), live sperm count (%) and total sperm abnormality (%) were found significantly different between adult and young bulls. No significant association between voice features and semen quality of bulls was observed. Hence, voice signals of male might provide some clues about their age but for semen quality, there is further need to explore the interesting relationship between voice features and fertility of breeding bulls.

A link between obesity, overweight and reproductive performance in male volunteers 18 to 40 years (n=261), living in the city of Novosibirsk was investigated. Hormone levels (follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T), oestradiol (E2), inhibin B) and main indicators of semen quality (concentration, percentage of motile and morphologically normal sperm) were evaluated in each patient. Following groups were retrospectively formed: the control (group 1, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2, n=50), overweight men (group 2, a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m2, n=28), obese men (group 3, a BMI greater than 30.0 kg/m2, n=5). The exclusion criteria from the analysis were as follows: andrological disease (prostatitis, epididymal cyst, varicocele, sexually transmitted infection), transferred surgery of andrological diseases. A reduction in the testosterone serum concentration was found along the groups in the direction 1-2-3 respectively, 23.3-15.7-11.8 nmol/L (р1,2=0.006; р1,3=0.0001). Semen volume was statistically reduced in obese men compared with normal weight men (p1,3=0.019). There were no significant differences in age, FSH, LH, E2, Inhibin B levels, concentration, motility, percentage of morphologically normal sperm between groups. The findings show the distinct hypoandrogenia in young men with overweight and obesity. A testosterone deficiency is increased with increasing BMI and the testosterone concentration descends to less than 12 nmol/L in the obesity group, which corresponds to hypogonadism.
