The effect of insecticide treatment on the yield and botanical composition of sown pastures in Western Australia

The yield and botanical composition of established, sown pastures were measured after applying insecticides to control the red-legged earth mite. Halotydeus destructor (Tuck.), the lucerne Flea, Sminthurus viridis (L.) and the webworm, Talis spp. The response to treatment depended upon the pest involved, the numbers present, and the vigour of the pasture. Control of H. destructor resulted in an average response of 3.9. cwt an acre of extra dry matter in the spring. To consume this, it is sugested that stocking rate should be increased by about 1/4 sheep per acre. This could be raised to 1/3 sheep per acre by careful selection of treatment areas. Slightly greater responses, up to perhaps 1/4 sheep per acre, can be expected when S. viridis is plentiful. Heavy webworm attack reduced carping capacity on average about one sheep per acre. The economics of insecticide treatment are examined in the light of these results. A formula is given whereby the farmer can calculate the likely return from treatment on his own property. It is concluded that in a large number of cases treatment is near the borderline of profitability. Farmers should make certain that insecticide treatment is the best way of spending their money. Having decided to use insecticides they should (a) treat only those areas where obvious damage is being done and avoid any blanket spraying programme and (b) ensure that some positive use is made of the increased herbage following treatment.

The type of pollen of date palm trees could affect the chemical characteristics of the fruit, and determine the quality and quantitative aspects. Careful selection of proper pollen for pollination of date palm is very important. This research was conducted for the selection of the best pollinizers and to study the effects of five varieties of male trees from the Shahdad area on the chemical characteristics of `Jiroft Mazafati' date. A completely random block was used for analysis of the 2 years of data (1991–1993). The study sight was in the Jiroft area of Kerman Province, Iran. Samples of fruit were collected after the pollination process and the required information recorded. Total dry matter, fruit moisture, total sugar content, fruit ash, and fruit pH were measured. Statistical calculations analysis and compound variations and evaluations of the treatments by Duncan's test indicate that, statistically, the different treatments have no effect on the fruit pH, and the difference are not significant. There are statistically significant effects on the other chemical characteristics of the fruit.

For five years, three rates of ammonium sulphate (N0, N1, and N3: 0, 280, and 840 kg/ha/year) were applied as a split dressing to ,a pasture of Bromus mollis L. and Trifolium subterraneum L. which was continuously grazed by wethers set-stocked at 8.6 and 12.4 sheep/ha. The N0 treatment produced clover dominance, N1 a mixed sward, and N3 grass dominance. The higher stocking rate increased the proportion of clover in the mixed sward. These differences in botanical composition produced three significant effects on the relation between liveweight gain and quantity of green pasture on offer. An increase in the proportion of clover in the sward increased: (1) the quantity of herbage dry matter on offer required for liveweight maintenance; (2) the maximum rate of liveweight gain; (3) the quantity of dry matter on offer at the point of 90% maximum liveweight gain. Regressions of those three parameters on botanical composition accounted for over 90% of the variance. The effects of treatments on liveweight at other times of the year are also described. In the first year of grazing ammonium sulphate increased liveweight, apparently because of increased pasture on offer after emergence. In subsequent years the effect of ammonium sulphate was reversed: liveweight was reduced, and this was associated with lower nitrogen concentrations in, and lower quantities of, herbage produced. Wool elongation rates were greatest in spring and lowest prior to the germinating rains in autumn. Elongation rate was unaffected by stocking rate and only slightly affected by ammonium sulphate. From January to April, greatest elongation occurred on the grass-dominant N3 paddocks; from May to December greatest elongation occurred on the clover-dominant N0 paddocks. The implications of the role of nitrogen fertilizer in relation to sheep production in the winter rainfall regions of Australia are discussed.

The effects of weather on clover scorch disease caused by Kabatiella caulivora, the effects of the disease on pasture and sheep production, and the effect of sheep stocking rate (6, 8, 10 and 12 sheep/ha) on the disease were studied in a field experiment over three seasons near Albany, Western Australia. Spraying with benlate was used to control clover scorch on some treatments. Mean temperatures during the period when symptoms of the disease increased were in the range 11-17�C. Rainfall was frequent each year during the same period. The rapid increase in disease symptoms was observed when pasture dry matter on offer was approximately 2500 kg/ha. Disease symptoms decreased during a period of water stress of the pasture. Clover scorch disease had no consistent effect on pasture or animal production except that pasture dry matter on offer in spring was reduced in the unsprayed treatments at the lower stocking rates in the second two years. Higher stocking rates (10 and 12 sheep/ha) reduced the level of clover scorch symptoms without the use of chemical control with benlate. At the period of peak scorch symptoms a stocking rate of 10 sheep/ha reduced disease incidence by 20-35% compared with 6 sheep/ha in unsprayed plots. Increased sheep stocking rates are suggested as a possible alternative to chemical control or replacement of susceptible strains of subterranean clover in grazed pasture.

SummaryPastures of a mixture of Brachiaria mutica(para) and B. decumbens(signal) grown with Gentrosema pubescens(centro) and Macroptilium atropurpureumcv. Siratro and grazed at three stocking rates 1·8, 2·1 and 3·6 animals/ha for 5 and 6 years of grazing were compared with B. humidicolacv. Tully (Koronivia) oversown with centro and siratro and grazed at 3·0, 3·6 and 4·5 animals/ha and native pastures of Themedaaustralis and Pennisetum polystachyon oversown with Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Schofield after burning, and grazed at 1·3, 2·0 and 2·7 animals/ha. All pastures were given 20 kg/ha of sulphur.The para and centro pasture gave the highest live-weight gain with 731 kg/ha/year when stocked at 3·6 animals/ha in 1979–80. and 592 kg/ha/year in 1980–1. Signal grass gave 621 and 493 kg/ha/year in 1979–80 and 1980–1 at 3·6 animals/ha. Koronivia grass gave similar production as signal: 639, 466 and 406 kg/ha/year at 3·6 animals/ha stocking rate from 1979 to 1982. On the natural pastures 1st year gains were high, 412 kg/ha/year at 2·7 animals/ha, but declined to 224 kg/ha/year at 2·0 animals/ha in year 2.In the para pastures, centro increased up to 50%, while with signal it increased to 25% of the botanical composition, owing to a decline in grass dry matter. In koronivia pastures, centro and siratro declined, inversely with stocking rate, and M.pudica increased in the high stocking rate. In the natural pastures T. triandra declined with increasing stocking, to 1% at 2·7 animals/ha. P. polystachyon remained approximately stable. M. pudica became important as grazing increased, and weeds also increased. Para grass was high in N, P, S and Na. N was low in signal, koronivia and T. triandra while the concentration of Na (0·41%) was high in koronivia, but it was extremely low in signal and T. triandra(0·02%).The trials suggest that landholders could commence grazing of existing natural pastures for up to 2 years at about 2·0 animals/ha in the 1st year and 1·3 animals/ha in subsequent years to obtain 350 kg LWG/ha in year 1 and the 200 kg LWG/ha thereafter. With cultivated pastures much higher yield can be obtained using para plus centro on the low-lying aieas, and signal plus centro plus siratro on non-flooded areas. Koronivia can be used in occasionally intensively stocked areas. All pastures require S fertilizer every 2 years.

The effects of phosphorus (P), sulphur (S) and stocking rate on the dry matter yield, and chemical and botanical composition of natural pasture were examined from November, 1971 to May, 1976 in a 20 point central composite design. P and S were applied annually at five levels (0, 6, 15, 23, 29 kg P ha-1; 0, 14, 34, 54, 67 kg S ha-1) and the plots were grazed continuously at five stocking rates (2.2, 3.2, 4.8, 6.3, 7.3 dry ewes ha-1). Each of the factors, P, S, and stocking rate affected total dry matter. At 4.8 and 6.3 sheep ha-1 the optimum rate of P was 15 kg ha-1, but at 3.2 sheep ha-1 it increased from 15 kg ha-1 to 23 kg ha-1 over the period. S had little effect on yield at the start and end of the experiment, but in between its effect depending on stocking rate; at 3.2 sheep ha-1 low levels (<I4 kg ha-1) were optimal, but at 4.8 and 6.3 sheep ha-1 very high levels (>54 kg ha-1) were needed. The quantity of green grass and legume was low in winter and was not consistently affected by any of the factors. The level of N in the green grass remained at less than 2%. Over the period of the experiment the basal cover of perennial grass and the frequency of annual legume declined, while the percentage of bare ground and annual grass increased. These changes over time could not be related to any of the factors, except that the percentage of A. ramosa declined at the higher stocking rates. In some years high stocking rate decreased the percentage of A. ramosa and S. variabilis, and increased that of C. truncata, D. linkii, K. phleoides and T. glomeratum. In terms of pasture yield, fertilized perennial grass pastures on the North-West Slopes have potential carrying capacities of at least 4.8 dry sheep ha-1. However, to support this high stocking rate without significantly affecting pasture yield high levels of S, around 54 kg ha-1, and moderate levels of P, around 15 kg ha-1, are required. At this higher stocking rate no major changes in botanical composition occurred.

Influence of top-dressing is considered in the article, norms and terms of sowing on of winter-annual rape. The assessment conducted by the yield of green mass and seeds, output capacity by about 1 hectare of dry matter, feed units and digestible protein, the number of dead plants and density of herbage. Established that hardiness and productivity of winter rape can be enhanced through the use of farming practices as: by creating a moderate density of herbage, using optimal terms of planting and doses of mineral fertilizers, selection of predecessors and careful preparation of the soil ect. The mechanism of influence of agrotechnical receptions is exposed on of winter-annual rape through determination in roots before the offensive of the winter of separate biochemical indexes (sugar, starch, to protein).

We all feel the implications of the force of social media—for good and for ill—in our lives and in our professional world. At the time of this writing, Facebook continues with its struggle to “clean up its act” as more revelations surrounding breaches of trust and hacked user data surface in the news and various countries attempt to hold Facebook to account. Despite this, social media use continues to grow exponentially, and the potential for responsible, ethical, and transparent social media to transform the ways in which we interact with and learn from each other increase with it. As we wait to see what the future holds for social media in society, we are reminded once again that it is the careful selection of pedagogical tools such as social media, as well the guided awareness of the challenges and benefits of those tools, that remains constant, even as tools may change, disappear, or fall out of fashion.

Net pasture dry matter production and available pasture dry matter were measured over 3 years in a small-scale replica of the study of the effects of dairy cow grazing management and stocking rate reported by McMeekan & Walshe (1963).2. The four treatments were(i) Controlled rotational grazing, light stocking rate (0.95 cows/acre).(ii) Controlled rotational grazing, heavy stocking rate (1.19 cows/acre).(iii) Uncontrolled, set stocked grazing, light stocking rate (0.95 cows/acre).(iv) Uncontrolled, set stocked grazing, heavy stocking rate (1.19 cows/acre).3. The pasture measurement technique employed measured net pasture production (gains through new growth minus losses from all sources). It is argued that this parameter, rather than absolute pasture production, governs the changes in the dry matter feed supply to the grazing animal.

Seed of 2 cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum) and 1 burr medic (Medicago polymorpha) with increasing phosphorus (P) concentrations (wheat 1.4-3.7 g P/kg dry matter, medic 3.3-7.9 g P/kg dry matter) were collected from field experiments with variable levels of applied superphosphate (wheat 0- 577 kg P/ha, medic 0-364 kg P/ha) in south-western Australia. These seeds were used in further experiments to examine the effect of seed P concentration on the subsequent dry matter (DM) production of seedlings and plants in 3 glasshouse pot experiments and 1 field experiment. Seed of the same size (wheat, 35 mg/seed; medic, 3.6 mg/seed) but with increasing P concentration produced substantially higher DM yields in the absence or presence of freshly applied superphosphate P up to 28-35 days after sowing in the pot experiments and 67 days after sowing in the field experiment.
