This study aimed to evaluate the allelopathic activity of aqueous extracts of castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) leaves on germination and initial growth of canola (Brassica napus L.) and radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seedlings. Two experiments were conducted, usingcanola seeds for the first, which was installed in a 2x7 factorial scheme (with two photoperiods – dark and light and seven extracts concentrations - 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32%). The second experiment consisted of an evaluation of radish seed germination submitted to seven concentrations of the extracts in the dark photoperiod. The germination of the canola seeds was reduced in the dark, and the use of extracts at concentrations of 16% and 32%inhibited seeds germination for both studied photoperiods. The radish seed germination was completely inhibited when the concentration of 32% was used, however, at the concentrations of 4, 8 and 16% a reduction on rootand hypocoyl development of the seedlings were observed, affirming the high allelopathic potential of castor bean aqueous extracts on canola and radish.

Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.), a promising bioenergy crop, is readily planted in marginal lands like saline soils. A controlled experiment was conducted to explore the possibility of using gibberellic acid (GA3) as a promoter for caster bean grown under NaCl conditions and to try to determine the most appropriate concentration of GA3 for seedling growth. The seeds of salt-tolerant cultivar Zibi 5 were firstly soaked with 0, 200, 250, and 300 µM GA3 for 12 h and then cultured with 1/2 Hoagland solution containing 0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl in pots filled with sand. Plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, dry mater of each organ, activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), soluble protein, and proline content in the leaves were examined. Plant height and stem diameter, SOD, and POD activity was significantly highest in the treatment of 250 µM GA3 under salt concentration of 50 mM NaCl among all the testing days; protein content was highest when GA3 concentration was 250 µM under 100 mM NaCl treatment. This indicated that caster bean seed soaking with 250 µM GA3 could be the most suitable concentration for promoting seedling growth of caster bean, improving their stress resistance.

AbstractThe endosperm and cotyledon tissues of Ricinus communis seeds and young seedlings were examined for changes in the mineral nutrient composition of globoids during early seedling growth. The effect on globoid composition of providing mineral nutrients to the developing seedling was also investigated. Globoids in endosperm and cotyledon tissues of castor bean seeds contained P, Mg and K, as well as trace amounts of Ca, Fe and Zn. Irrespective of the addition of mineral nutrients, K content in globoids of endosperm and cotyledon tissues declined significantly during initial seedling growth. During early seedling growth, amounts of Fe, Zn and Ca increased in cotyledon globoids. Ca contents of globoids of endosperm tissues also increased. The changes in Fe, Zn and Ca globoid contents were not influenced by providing mineral nutrients to growing castor bean seedlings.

The current study was aimed to evaluate the seed priming potential of AGE (aqueous garlic extracts) to enhance seed germination and early seedling growth of eggplant. Different concentrations (100, 200, and 300 µg mL−1) of AGE were evaluated along with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and salicylic acid (SA), plant growth regulators with reported seed priming potential whereas, water was taken as a control treatment. Eggplant seeds were primed for 4-, 8-, and 12-h and seed germination traits such germination rate index, germination percentage, mean germination time, and early seedling growth traits such as fresh and dry weights, root, and shoot lengths were observed. Moreover, plant antioxidant enzymes activities and lipid peroxidation levels, soluble protein contents and reactive oxygen species were monitored to establish the stimulatory/inhibitory effects of the treatments. Our results indicate priming potential of AGE, SA, and MeJA to enhance seed germination and early seedling growth in eggplant and the effects were obvious in various morphological and physiological traits. Seed priming significantly altered the antioxidant enzymes activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) with alteration in the reactive oxygen species (ROS). Interestingly, priming duration also affected the bioactivity of these chemicals because seed priming with 300 µg mL−1 AGE for 4 h had a positive influence, however, prolonged exposure to the same concentration inhibited the seed germination process and induced oxidative stress on the seedlings with elevated levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) content. We propose AGE seed priming as a bio-stimulant to enhance seed germination and early seedling growth in eggplant, and the results hence lay the foundation for the preparation of garlic-based compounds to improve vegetables production under plastic tunnels and greenhouse production units.

This study was carried out to determine the influence of cuprous oxide nanoparticles (Cu2O NPs) biosynthesised from leaf extracts of Flacourtia montana on the tomato Lycioersicum esculentum seed germination, seedling growth and vigour index. Here we examined the promotory and phytotoxic effect of Cu2O NPs (0-160ppm) on tomato seeds resulted in dosage dependent response. The highest germination percentage (95%) was observed at 20ppm Cu2O NPs, however, above 20ppm Cu2O NPs, there is a reduction in the seed germination. The tomato seedlings showed increased root and shoot elongation up to 20ppm Cu2O NPs concentration, further increase in NPs concentration caused the negative effect on plants growth and development. The leaf pigments showed increasing trend in tomato plants after treatment with Cu2O NPs up to 20ppm as compared to control. Phytotoxicity of Cu2O NPs in tomato seedlings demonstrated by lower contents of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid pigments. The study of effect on antioxidant enzymes showed increases in activity with increase in Cu2O NPs concentration for two enzymes, Super oxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) out of five enzymes treated. High antioxidant activity of enzymes is followed by the increased lipid peroxidation and decrease in free radical scavenging activity by the DPPH. The activity of Catalase, Pheny Alanine Aminolyase and Poly Phenol Oxidase enzymes were found to increase up to 20ppm as compared to control and above this, all three enzymes showed decrease in activity. Uptake of Cu2O NPs nanoparticle by tomato seedlings was confirmed by atomic absorption spectroscopy.  Key words: Nano-Cuprous Oxide, Flacourtia montana, Tomato, antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation

The effect of 24-epibrassinolide and 28-homobrassinolide on seed germination and seedling growth of radish (<I>Raphanus sativus</I> L.) was studied under cadmium toxicity. The impact of brassinosteroids (BRs) on free proline levels and the activity of antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT; EC 1.11.1.6), peroxidase (POD; EC 1.11.1.7), superoxide dismutase (SOD; EC 1.15.1.1), ascorbic peroxidase (APOX; EC 1.11.1.11) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPX; EC 1.11.1.7) in radish seedlings under Cd toxicity was evaluated. The effect of BRs on the activity of ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO; EC 1.10.3.3) and lipid peroxidation in radish seedlings challenged with Cd stress was also investigated. BRs supplementation alleviated the toxic effect of the heavy metal and increased the percentage of seed germination and seedling growth. Out of the two substances, HBL was found to be more effective than EBL in stress alleviation. HBL (3&micro;M) alleviated the toxic effect of the heavy metal and increased the percentage of seed germination by 57% over Cd and 20% over unstressed control. Similarly supplementation of HBL (3&micro;M) caused an increase of 156%, 78% and 91% in length, fresh weight and dry weight of seedling, respectively, over Cd treatment alone. The amelioration of seedling growth by BRs under metal toxicity was associated with enhanced levels of free proline. The activities of antioxidant enzymes CAT, SOD, APOX and GPX were increased in the seedlings from treatments with Cd along with BRs. Brassinosteroid treatment reduced the activity of POD and AAO in heavy metal stressed seedlings. Lipid peroxidation induced by Cd was found reduced with the supplementation of BRs. The results obtained in the study clearly indicated the ameliorative influence of brassinosteroids on the inhibitory effect of Cd toxicity.

Currently, a real challenge for the workers in the agricultural research field is to stop or reduce the use of expensive agrochemicals/ chemical fertilizers which are hazardous to the environment as well as human health. Present study was aimed to improve the growth and obtain optimum yield of Vigna crop with eco-friendly, non-toxic way and to reduce the use of agrochemical/chemical fertilizer application in agricultural activities. A pot experiment was conducted to study the effect of chemical fertilizer (DAP) and biofertilizer ( Rhizobium strain) separately and in combination on seed germination and seedling growth (at 30 days) based on morphological parameters such as seedling length (cm), fresh weight (g), dry weight (g) and leaf area (cm)2 of Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek. After one month (30 Days) observations, it was found that seedling length, fresh and dry weights and leaf area were maximum in T4 and minimum in T15, T7 and T8 favored improved seedling length and leaf area whereas T7, T8, and T9 favored improved fresh and dry weights as compared to control.
