Ion Ion Solvent Interactions in Solution .XI. Spectroscopic Studies of Group-2 Perchlorates in Acetone

Solutions of Mg(ClO4)2 and Sr (ClO4)2 in acetone have been studied at various concentrations up to saturation by using infrared absorption, Raman scattering and multinuclear n.m.r (1H, 13C, 17O, 25Mg, 35Cl). Solvation numbers of c. 4.5 (Mg2+) and c. 5.5 (Sr2+) were determined from component band analysis of the c. 800 cm-1 acetone band in the Raman spectra. The solvent shell about the Mg2+ had a high level of steric crowding. There was a small amount of solvent-shared ion-pair formation at all oncentrations in solutions of Mg(ClO4)2 which showed little concentration dependence. In solutions of Sr (ClO4)2 there was evidence for the formation of both solvent-shared associated-ion species and ion-contact species. The solvent-shared species appeared to have two alternative configurations in one of which the anion was both polarized and highly hindered. There was a salt-promoted reaction in which the perchlorate was reduced to chloride and the solution darkened. This reaction prevented the use of Raman spectra to quantify the association equilibria.

Vibrational spectra and 7Li, 13C and 35Cl n.m.r. spectra have been obtained for solutions of LiClO4 in acetone for salt concentrations from 0.05 to 6 M. Infrared spectra give qualitative indications of ion association. Analysis of the Raman band due to C-C stretching in acetone yields solvation numbers for the Li+ ion of the order of 3. Component band analysis of the ClO4- symmetric stretching vibrational band and the various n.m.r. spectra lead to the identification of solvent-separated ion pairs, contact ion pairs and ion aggregates, in addition to free solvated ions. The dependence on salt concentration of all four species has been determined. The association quotient for the association equilibrium (Li+)s(ClO4)- ↔ [Li+(acetone)ClO4-)s was determined to be 1.4 � 0.3 dm3 mol-1.

Association equilibria in aqueous solutions of the salts Be(NO3)2, Ca(NO3)2 Sr(NO3)2, Ba(NO3)2 and Al(NO3)3 have been studied through band shape and component band analysis of the non-degenerate, Raman-active V1 vibrational band of the nitrate ion. Band contributions due to the aquated nitrate ion, solvent-separated ion pair, and contact ion pair were made for all salts. The nature of the contact ion pair was shown to be different in the presence of Be2+ and Al3+ from that seen for the other salts. This difference was associated with a strongly directional perturbation of the nitrate ion. For all salts the solvent-separated ion pair species was present in the lowest concentration solution studied (as low as 0.05 M). At intermediate concentrations the solvent separated ion pair species was the dominant solution species while at the higher concentrations the species with anion and cation in contact becomes appreciable. For solutions of Ca(NO3)2 some evidence for a more extensive ion aggregate was found at the highest concentration (5M). Equilibrium quotients calculated from the spectroscopic components are in reasonable agreement with previous values determined by equilibrium and transport measurements, and it is suggested that these previous determinations detected the presence of solvent-separated ion pairs rather than contact ion pairs.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Aim to determine the features of adiponectin expression, secretion of adiponectin and its receptors in local fat depots in CVD. Materials and methods The study included 90 patients with СAD (Group 1) and 60 patients with heart defects (Group 2). Adipocytes were isolated from samples of subcutaneous (SAT), epicardial (EAT) and perivascular (PVAT) adipose tissue obtained during CABG or heart valve replacement. The expression of adiponectin was determined by qPCR using TaqManTM Gene Expression Assays (Applied Biosystems, USA) in the ViiA 7 Real-Time PCR System (Applied Biosystems, USA), the levels of expression products was determined using enzyme immunoassay (Bender MedSystems GmbH, Vienna, Austria). The data were analyzed using the statistical software Statistica 9.0. Results EAT adipocytes were characterized by the lowest adiponectin expression relative to adipocytes of other localization both in Group 1 and Group 2. In patients Group 1 adiponectin expression in EAT was reduced relative in SAT and PVAT (by 1.2 and 1.5 times). In Group 2, the adiponectin mRNA in the EAT was lower than in the SAT and PVAT (1.4 and 1.5 times). The expression of adiponectin in EAT in Group 2 exceeded the same indicator in Group 1 by 1.2 times. The maximum expression of adiponectin was observed in the PVAT culture in patients of both groups. For Group 2, this indicator exceeded the values of Group 1 by 1.2 times. The content of adiponectin in the culture EAT was lower than in the SAT, both in Group 1 and Group 2 (by 1.3 and 1.13 times). The level of this indicator in Group 2 was 1.4 times higher than in Group 1. PVAT adipocytes of patients with CAD were characterized by the lowest level of adiponectin secretion in comparison with adipocytes of other localization. The adiponectin level in the PVAT of Group 2 exceeded that of fat stores of other localization and in Group 1 patients by 1.8 times. There were no statistically significant differences in the expression and concentration of adiponectin in the culture of adipocytes of the SAT between the groups of patients. In Group 1, the lowest level of AdipoR1 was found in the adipocyte culture of the PVAT. Noteworthy is the decrease in the level of AdipoR1 in Group 1 compared to the level of Group 2, observed in the SAT and PVAT: 1.3 and 1.5 times. There were no significant differences in the concentration of the AdipoR1 in the EAT, as well as AdipoR2 in all types of AT between the groups of patients. Conclusion: in CVD the EAT is characterized by minimal expression and secretion of adiponectin, regardless of nosology. In CAD despite the high level of expression of adiponectin, the adipocytes of the PVAT were found to have the lowest content in comparison with adipocytes of other localization. Dysregulation of the adiponectin/AdipoR axis is observed in PVAT, which may be due to low expression of adiponectin receptors and long-term processes of its post-translational modification and oligomerization in CAD.

The Raman spectra of solutions in acetone of crystalline salts with anionic stoicheiometries HgX3-, HgX42-, Hg2X5-, and Hg3X82- (where X = Cl, Br, or I) were determined. The dominant species identified in all cases except (pyH)2HgI4 was HgX3- which probably had a bent (C3v) configuration. The species Hg2I5- was also identified in solutions of Me4NHg.2I5. The disproportionation reactions are discussed in terms of ion-solvent interactions.

Detonation nanodiamonds (NDs) have shown to be promising agents in several industries, ranging from electronic to biomedical applications. These NDs are characterized by small particle size ranging from 3 to 6 nm, while having a reactive surface and a stable inert core. Nanodiamonds can exhibit novel intrinsic properties such as fluorescence, high refractive index, and unique Raman signal making them very attractive imaging agents. In this work, we used several nanodiamond preparations for Raman spectroscopic studies. We exposed these nanodiamonds to increasing temperature treatments at constant heating rates (425–575°C) aiding graphite release. We wanted to correlate changes in the nanodiamond surface and properties with Raman signal which could be used as adetection marker. These observations would hold potential utility in biomedical imaging applications. First, the procedure of optimal linear smoothing was applied successfully to eliminate the high-frequency fluctuations and to extract the smoothed Raman spectra. After that we applied the secondary Fourier transform as the fitting function based on some significant set of frequencies. The remnant noise was described in terms of the beta-distribution function. We expect this data treatment to provide better results in biomolecule tracking using nanodiamond base Raman labeling.

✓ The degree of brain-stem dysfunction associated with high-level fluid-percussion injury (3.0 to 3.8 atm) was investigated in anesthetized cats. Measurements were made of the animals' intracranial pressure (ICP), pressure-volume index (PVI), far-field brain-stem auditory evoked responses (BAER's), and cerebral blood flow (CBF). The animals were classified into two groups based on the severity of neuropathological damage to the brain stem after trauma: Group 1 had mild intraparenchymal and subarachnoid hemorrhages and Group 2 had severe intraparenchymal and subarachnoid hemorrhages. The ICP values in Group 1 were insignificantly lower than those in Group 2, while the PVI values in Group 2 were clearly lower (p < 0.05). Immediately after the injury, peaks II, III, and IV of the BAER's demonstrated a transitory and marked suppression. One Group 1 and two Group 2 animals showed the disappearance of peak V. In Group 1, the latencies of peak II, III, and IV gradually increased until 60 to 150 minutes postinjury, then returned to 95% of baseline value at 8 hours; however, the animals in Group 2 showed poor recovery of latencies. Two hours after brain injury, the CBF decreased to 40% of the preinjury measurement in both groups (p < 0.001). In contrast to Group 2, the CBF in Group 1 returned to 86.8% of the preinjury measurement by 8 hours following the injury. Changes in PVI, BAER, and CBF correlated well with the degree of brain-stem injury following severe head injury'- These data indicate that high-level fluid-percussion injury (> 3.0 atm) is predominantly a model of brain-stem injury.

Immunity acquired by newborn animals is known as passive immunity, and for ruminants, antibody acquisition depends on the ingestion and absorption of adequate amounts of immunoglobulins from colostrum. This study relates different initial levels of acquired passive protection and serum total protein (TP) and immunoglobulin G (IgG). Serum immunoglobulin concentration and total protein were evaluated for female Holstein calves in the first sixty days of life. Animals were separated into three groups according to their initial level of passive immunity: group 1- animals with a low level of passive immunity (below 20 mg mL-1); group 2- animals with a medium level (between 20 and 30 mg mL-1), and group 3- animals with a high level (above 30 mg mL-1). Serum total protein was determined through the biuret method and IgG was determined by radial immunodiffusion. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized, split-plot statistical design. Fluctuation of the variables along the experimental period was determined through non-linear regression by the DUD method (PROC NLIN - Non Linear SAS). Animals with low antibody acquisition started to produce antibodies earlier, reflecting a compensatory synthesis. On the other hand, animals having adequate levels exhibited an extended period of immunoglobulin catabolism and the beginning of the endogenous phase was delayed. Regardless initial levels, the fluctuations in IgG contents occurred around adequate physiological concentrations, ranging from 20 to 25 mg mL-1.

Recent studies indicated a high prevalence of hyperglycemia in non-diabetic patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the threshold of admission glucose (AG) as a predictor of adverse events in ACS is unclear. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the threshold of admission glucose (AG) as a predictor of adverse events including Major Acute Cardiac Events (MACE) and mortality, during the first week of admitting patients presenting with ACS. Material and Methods The data of 551 patients with ACS were extracted and evaluated. Patients were stratified according to their blood glucose on admission into three groups: group 1: <7 mmol/L (n = 200, 36.3%) and group 2: >7 mmol/L and <15 mmol/L (n = 178, 32.3%) and group 3: ≥15 mmol/L (n = 173, 31.4%). Stress hyperglycemia was arbitrarily defined as AG levels > 7 mmol/L (group 2 and 3). Patients with ACS were sub-divided into two groups: patients with unstable angina (UA, n = 285) and those with ST segment elevation myocardial Infarction (STEMI, n = 266) and data were analyzed separately using multiple regression analysis. Results The mean age of patients was 59.7 ± 14.8 years and 63% were males. The overall mortality in the population was 8.5% (5.4% in STEMI and 3.1% in UA) patients. In STEMI patients, the odds ratio of stress hyperglycemia as predictor of mortality in group 3 compared with group 1 was 3.3 (CI 0.99-10.98, P < 0.05), while in group 2 compared with group 1 was 2.4 (CI: 0.75-8.07, P = 0.065) after adjustment for age and sex. Similarly, in UA patients, the odds ratio of stress hyperglycemia in group 3 compared with group 1 was 2.7 (CI 0.37-18.98, P < 0.05), while in group 2 compared with group 1 was 2.4 (CI: 0.4-15.2, P = 0.344) after adjustment for age and sex. The incidence of more than 2 MACE in both STEMI and UA patients was higher in group 3 compared with the other two groups. Regression analysis showed that history of DM, high level of LDL cholesterol, high level of HbA1c, and anterior infarction were significant predictors of adverse events while other risk factors such as BMI, history of hypertension and smoking were of no significance. Conclusion This study indicates that the stress hyperglycemia on admission is a powerful predictor of increased major adverse events and hospital mortality in patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Background: The current study aimed to investigate the possible cross-protective effects of attenuated L. major against L. infantum in BALB/c mice. Methods: This experimental study was performed in 2017 in Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. The attenuated strain of L. major was prepared by continuous weekly subculturing of the parasite. Forty-eight female BALB/c mice were divided into eight groups. Group 1 injected (ID) with wild type of L. major; group 2 injected (IV) with L. infantum; group 3 injected (ID) with attenuated L. major; group 4 injected (ID) with attenuated L. major, and after three weeks challenged (IV) with L. infantum; group 5 injected (IP) with attenuated L. major; group 6 injected (IP) with attenuated L. major, and challenged (IV) with L. infantum (IV); group 7 injected (IV) with attenuated L. major; and finally group 8 injected (IV) with attenuated L. major and after three weeks challenged (IV) with L. infantum. Forty-five days post-infection, the parasite load in the spleen and liver of the mice was determined as Leishman-Donovan units (LDU). Results: The differences in mean of LDU of spleen between different groups were statistically significant (P<0.048). In addition, the differences in percent of infection in liver between pairwise comparisons of groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). The highest intensity of infection was observed in group 2 while low intensity of infection was seen in groups 3, 4 and 5. Conclusion: Live attenuated L. major can induce substantial protection against L. infantum, particularly when the parasites were injected intravenously.

Background. The lipid profiles of patients with overweight, obesity and healthy individuals, the citizens of Transcarpathia valley regions were analysed.Objective. The study was aimed at evaluation of dyslipidaemia frequency in patients with overweight and obesity, determination of expedience of statins prescription.Methods. All patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 – patients with overweight; group 2 – patients with obesity of I and II degree. Estimation of lipid profile parameters was conducted by means of spectrophotometric device SIEMENS Dimension RxL Max. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted using Microsoft Excel 2007.Results. The patients with obesity had higher level of total cholesterol (6.03±0.53 mmol/l), lower HDL-C (1.15±0.07 mmol/l) and higher level of LDL-C (4.19±0.46 mmol/l) compare with overweight patients.In 46% of patients with overweight, dyslipidaemia was evidenced and required correction, 27% of them had high CVR and needed statin therapy, 19% of people with obesity had moderate CVR and didn’t need statins.77% of obese patients needed lipid correction, 54% of them with very high and averagely high level of CVR required statin therapy; 23% of people with obesity had moderate CVR and did not need statins.Conclusions. In the studied overweight and obese patients, atherogenic dyslipidaemia was established in 46% and 77% of cases respectively. Correction of dyslipidaemia with statin was compulsory for 27% of patients with overweight and for 54% with obesity.
