Isentropic compressibilities of binary mixtures of butylamine + hexane, butylamine + heptane, and butylamine + octane were determined at 303.15 and 313.15 K. The three mixtures exhibit positive deviations in compressibility. This is ascribed to a structure-breaking effect of n-alkanes. The deviation becomes more positive with increase in chain length of n-alkanes and with increase in temperature.

Excess volumes of binary mixtures of alcohols in methylcyclohexane have been determined at 30.0 and 40.0 °C, using a modified dilatometer of Brown and Smith. The systems include: (I) 1-propanol – methylcyclohexane, (2) 1-butanol – methylcyclohexane, (3) 1-pentanol–methylcyclohexane, and (4) 1-hexanol–methylcyclohexane. The VE values are found to be positive over the entire range of composition in all the four systems and the values are interpreted on the basis of the structure-breaking effect of methylcyclohexane.

The diagrams of state of mixtures of 4-n-alkyloxybenzylidene-4'-n-butylanilines with 4-n- alkyl- and 4-n-alkyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyls are studied. The mixtures form induced smectic phases of type SA, SB and SE. In all three smectic phases the thickness of the smectic layers agrees with the mean values of the molecular lengths. In most cases the induced SA phases do not show uninterrupted miscibility with the SA phases of the pure components. For instance, the system 40 • 4/8 CBP exhibits three separate SA phase areas. The maximum transition temperatures of the induced smectic phases increase with increasing chain length of the azomethines, but remain constant in case of the SA and SB phases or even decrease in case of the SE phases with increasing chain length of the cyanobiphenyls

Enthalpies of mixing are reported for ternary n-alkane mixtures prepared from binary mixtures with large chain-length differences and at temperatures where the enthalpies of mixing of simple binary mixtures show changes of sign. In neither case does the behaviour of the ternary mixtures deviate significantly from that of the congruent binaries.

Excess volumes and isentropic compressibilities for the binary mixtures of cyclohexanone, cylopentanone and 2-methylcyclohexanone with butylamine were determined at 30315 and 31315 K. Excess volumes of the three mixtures are negative over the whole range of compositions at both the temperatures. Deviations in isentropic compressibility are also negative in all the three mixtures. The results are ascribed to strong hydrogen bonding between unlike molecules. The results also suggest that cyclization decreases both √E and the deviation in isentropic compressibility.
