Di(cyclopentadienyl)titanium(III) chloride has been prepared in high yield by addition of tetrahydrofuran to dry mixtures of titanium trichloride and di(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium in stoicheiometric or excess amounts. Reaction of titanium tetrachloride with excess di(cyclopentadienyl)magnesium also yielded (C5H5)2TiCl in moderate yield. Some properties of the compound are given, including solid state and aqueous spectra. Magnetic measurements show the compound to have one unpaired electron per titanium atom.

AbstractReaction of Mn(NCS)2with pyrazole leads to the formation of three compounds with the compositions Mn(NCS)2(pyrazole)4(1), [Mn(NCS)2]2(pyrazole)6(2) and Mn(NCS)2(pyrazole)2(3). Compound1, already reported in the literature, consists of discrete complexes, in which the Mn(II) cations are octahedrally coordinated by four pyrazole ligands and two terminally N-bonded thiocyanate anions. In compound2each of the two Mn(II) cations are coordinated octahedrally by three pyrazole ligands and one terminal as well as two bridging thiocyanate anions, which link the metal cations into dimers. In compound3also octahedrally coordinated Mn(II) cations are present but they are linked into chainsviacentrosymmetric pairs ofμ-1,3-bridging thiocyanate anions. Upon heating compound1loses the pyrazole co-ligands stepwise and is transformed into the chain compound3viathe dimer2that is formed as an intermediate. Magnetic measurements on compounds2and3reveal dominating antiferromagnetic interactions, as already observed for 1D Mn(NCS)2coordination compounds with pyridine based co-ligands.

A method for the selective monooxdiation of secondary benzylic C–H bonds is described using an N-oxyl catalyst and a hypervalent iodine species as a terminal oxidant. Combinations of ammonium iodate and catalytic N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) were shown to be effective in the selective oxidation of n-butylbenzene directly to 1-phenylbutyl acetate in high yield (86%). This method shows moderate substrate tolerance in the oxygenation of substrates containing secondary benzylic C–H bonds, yielding the corresponding benzylic acetates in good to moderate yield. Tertiary benzylic C–H bonds were shown to be unreactive under similar conditions, despite the weaker C–H bond. A preliminary mechanistic analysis suggests that this NHPI-iodate system is functioning by a radical-based mechanism where iodine generated in situ captures formed benzylic radicals. The benzylic iodide intermediate then solvolyzes to yield the product ester.

In the present study, we aimed to obtain a high yield and productivity for glucosamine using a low-cost solid-state culture with Aspergillus sydowii BCRC 31742. The fermentation conditions, such as inoculum biomass, moisture content, and supplemental volume and mineral salt, were chosen to achieve high productivity of glucosamine (GlcN). When the initial supplemental volume used was 3 mL/g substrate, the yield and productivity of GlcN were 48.7 mg/gds and 0.69 mg/gds·h, respectively. This result will be helpful for the industrialization of the process.

Crystal and molecular structure analysis of 1,4-diethylquinoxalinium iodide shows a virtually planar quinoxaline ring with 11 conjugated π-electrons. In contrast to the triiodide of the 1,4,6,7-tetramethyl derivative or to the tetraphenylborate salt of 1,4-diethylquinoxalinium cation radical the iodide exhibits π-π-dimerized radical cations in the solid state with synplanar ethyl groups and a rather small intermolecular distance of about 315 pm between the π-planes of the primarily interacting 1,4-diazine rings. Solid state magnetic measurements between 2 and 300 K show considerably diminished magnetic moments due to partial spin-pairing, and UV/VIS spectroscopic measurements in acetonitrile reflect the π—π-interaction in solution through the appearance of a long-wavelength absorption band.
