Via hydrothermal synthesis, we constructed four nucleobase metal-organic compounds, viz. Zn2(7H-ade)(oba)2·H2O (1), Zn(1H-hyp)(Hoba) (2), Ni(1H-ade)(ip) (3), and Cd(H2O)(9H-ade)(ip) (4), where ade, hyp, H2oba, and H2ip are adenine, hypoxanthine, 4,4′-oxybisbenzoic acid, and isophthalic acid, respectively. These polymers show novel 2D and 3D structures, such as 3-fold interpenetrating dmp net, supramolecular zeolite-type sra net, and exceptional 2D 44 net composed of three kinds of quadrangle, observed in polymers 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Moreover, thermogravimetric studies of polymers 1, 2, and 4, and the magnetic properties of 3 are also explored.

The long-standing dream of scientists to be able to link molecules together into crystalline, extended (infinite) 2D and 3D structures is now realized by the establishment of reticular chemistry through the discovery and development of metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks. The architectural, thermal, and chemical stability of such frameworks allowed study of their ultra-high porosity, reactivity and many applications including carbon capture and conversion to fuels, and water harvesting from desert air.

The important role of pyrazine (pz) and its derivatives in fields such as biochemistry and pharmacology, as well as in the study of magnetic properties, is surveyed. Recognition of these properties without extensive investigations into their structural properties is not possible. This review summarizes interactions that exist between these organic compounds by themselves in the solid state, as well as those in coordination polymers with metal ions and in polyoxometalate-based hybrids. Complexes based on pyrazine ligands can generate metal–organic framework (MOF) structures that bind polyoxometalates (POMs) through covalent and noncovalent interactions. Some biological and magnetic properties involving these compounds are considered and the effect of hydrogen bonding on their supramolecular architectures is highlighted.
