The structural characterization of several novel complexes of gallium(iii) and indium(iii) nitrates, crystallized with 2,2′-bipyridyl (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) from nitromethane solution, is presented. The adduct In(NO3)3:bpy (1:2) is of the form [(ONO2)(O2NO)2In(bpy)2], rather than [(ONO2)3ML2] as found for the larger M = Ln (rare earth), Bi, despite similar 2-symmetry. Several hydroxo-bridged dimers, [L2M(OH)2ML2](NO3)4(·S) are also presented, the cations all of the same isomeric form. [(ONO2)(bpy)In(OH)2In(bpy)(O2NO)], interestingly, displays two different forms within the one crystal, by virtue of different dispositions of the coordinated nitrate. The structures of related cis-[(phen)2GaBr2]Br(·S) and [(en)2In(OH)2In(en)2](NO3)4 (en = H2N(CH2)2NH2) are also described, the latter isomorphous with its cobalt(iii) counterpart.

The room-temperature single-crystal X-ray structural characterization of the title compound (tpyH2)2[Tb(OH2)8]Cl7.~2⅓H2O is recorded. Crystals are triclinic, Pī , a 17.063(5), b 16.243(3), c 7.878(3) Ǻ, α 84.78(2), β 84.39(3), γ 87.81(2)°, Z = 2 formula units; 3167 'observed' diffractometer reflections were refined by full-matrix least-squares procedures to a residual of 0.057. Notable features of interest of the compound are the 'chelation' of chloride ions by the terpyridinium cations , and the existence of a free [Tb(OH2)8]2+ cation in the presence of an abundance of chloride ions.

The structural characterization of a new quasi- undecahydrate of samarium(III) picrate is described. [ Sm ( pic )2(OH2)6]( pic ).43/4H2O is monoclinic, C 2/c, a 39.96(1), b 7.951(2), c 24.233(9) Ǻ, β 110.92(2)°, Z = 8, temperature c.295 K; R was 0.047 for 5010 'observed' diffractometer reflections. Like the cations of Part I, the present has two picrate and six aqua ligands; although the general stereochemistry is similar, the picrate ligands are both clearly unidentate, unlike previous arrays wherein one behaves in a quasi- bidentate mode utilizing an ortho-nitro oxygen atom.
