Seed Production, Pollinator Attractants and Breeding System in Relation to Fire Response — Are There Reproductive Syndromes among Co-occurring Proteaceous Shrubs?

The reproductive biology of two species pairs was compared, one member of which (Dryandra sessilis (Knight) Domin, Hakea erinacea Meissner) is susceptible to severe stress and disturbance by fire (nonsprouter) and stores few seeds in its crown, while the other (D. lindleyana Meissner, H. cristata R.Br.) is resilient (resprouter) and also stores most of its seeds for some years. It was hypothesised that the nonsprouter would have a high annual seed production associated with a suite of attributes directed towards that end (forming a reproductive syndrome), and that the resprouter would have the reverse properties. Over 30 attributes were assessed, covering putative pollinators, pollinator attractants and rewards, flower phenology, breeding system, and flower, fruit and seed production. Dryandra sessilis produced far more seeds than D. lindleyana, due to prolific flower production and a high fruit : flower ratio (associated with an effective outcrossing breeding system). Hakea erinacea produced significantly more seeds than H. cristata, which was attributable to its smaller fruits and exceptionally high fruit : flower ratio (associated with highly effective selfing). The correlation of seed production and fruit : flower ratio with susceptibility to fire was not supported by any consistent pattern among the other reproductive attributes.

Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Ligaria cuneifolia have been studied, addressing the following questions: (i) Are there temporal differences in the female and male functions? (ii) How do nectar composition, volume, concentration, and amount of sugar vary throughout the flower lifetime? (iii) How does the plant respond to nectar removal? (iv) What is the breeding system of this species? Flowers last 4 days. There is a predominance of the male function in the first days and of the female function in the last days. Chemical composition of nectar varies throughout the flower lifetime; there is a constant decrease in sucrose along with an increase in glucose. Nectar is secreted during nights, and every secretion period is followed by a cessation interval. After the final cessation, a period of active resorption follows. During the mostly male phase of the flower, nectar has more sucrose than hexose, its secretion is discontinuous, and nectar removal reduces the rate of nectar production. During the mostly female phase, nectar has more hexose than sucrose, its secretion ceases, nectar removal does not affect nectar production, and a resorption period is inferred. Tests for spontaneous autogamy and apomixis were negative. Low fruit set is obtained when autogamous, geitonogamous, and xenogamous hand pollinations are performed on flowers less than 2 days old compared with flowers at least 3 days old (0, 15, and 47% versus 19, 37.5, and 89%, respectively). These results indicate the the reproductive system of L. cuneifolia is primarily xenogamous, but reproductive success is related to flower age. Abstract Island plants provide special opportunities for the study of evolution and ecology. In field and greenhouse studies we characterized a model reproductive system for Plocama pendula, endemic to the Canary Islands. This species has a complicated and not immediately obvious reproductive system. Pollination is biotic, and all flowers are morphologically hermaphroditic, but half of the plants characteristically bear flowers with nectar, pistils with reflexed stigmatic lobes and pollen-less anthers (i.e. they are functionally female flowers). The other half bear nectar-less flowers with abundant pollen and full-sized pistils that mostly have un-reflexed stigmatic lobes (i.e. they are hermaphroditic flowers functioning mostly as males). However, experiments show these pollen-bearing flowers to be self-compatible. Thus, the functionally male flowers have a breeding system that allows selfing in limited circumstances, but the functionally male flowers produce far fewer fruits than do functionally female flowers. With morphologically gynodioecious, functionally largely dioecious flowers, sometimes capable of selfing, the reproductive system of this species could be labelled as ‘leaky’ in many respects. Thus, we propose that P. pendula has colonized new habitats and persists in substantial populations at least in part because it manifests a reproductive system that is a model for successfully balancing the often-conflicting evolutionary demands of colonization, establishment and persistence.

Acacia baileyana F.Muell. is a native environmental weed which has invaded bush areas of south-eastern Australia from ornamental plantings. There are two main colour forms, the typical green-leaf form and the variety `purpurea', which has purple new growth. Only the green form appears to have invaded natural bush. The weed potential of A. baileyana was investigated in terms of its breeding system and seed production. It was found that the purple form is as reproductively efficient as the green form. Both forms were outcrossing, highly self-incompatible, grew very rapidly and flowered by two years of age. For open, natural pollination, final pod set was low-less than 0.41%. However, seed production was high due to the high number of flowers present. Maximum flower production for a 2-year-old plant was over 300 000, resulting in more than 8000 seeds. Precocity and high flower numbers appear to be the reasons for the weed status of A. baileyana. Given the similarity in reproductive efficiency between both forms, it is postulated that the absence of the purple form as a weed could be due to it being a relatively new horticultural variety, or to the purple colour being a recessive trait.

Abstract In each of the mussel species Mytilus edulis and M. trossulus there exist two types of mtDNA, the F type transmitted through females and the M type transmitted through males. Because the two species produce fertile hybrids in nature, F and M types of one may introgress into the other. We present the results from a survey of a population in which extensive hybridization occurs between these two species. Among specimens classified as “pure” M. edulis or “pure” M. trossulus on the basis of allozyme analysis, we observed no animal that carried the F or the M mitotype of the other species. In most animals of mixed nuclear background, an individual's mtDNA came from the species that contributed the majority of the individual's nuclear genes. Most importantly, the two mtDNA types in post-F1 male hybrids were of the same species origin. We interpret this to mean that there are intrinsic barriers to the exchange of mtDNA between these two species. Because such barriers were not noted in other hybridizing species pairs (many being even less interfertile than M. edulis and M. trossulus), their presence in Mytilus could be another feature of the unusual mtDNA system in this genus.

Synbranchus lampreia, new species, is described from rio Goiapi, Marajó Island, Pará, northern Brazil. It differs from the other two described species of the genus by its color pattern, which consists of large roundish black blotches scattered over a light brown or yellowish ground pigmentation and presence of inconspicuous brown small spots distributed among the large dark spots. The species is further distinguished from S. marmoratus by a higher number of vertebrae and from S. madeira by a shorter postanal length. Information about reproductive aspects is provided and larval stages are described and illustrated.

The duiker community in Central African rainforests includes a diversity of species that can coexist in the same area. The study of their activity patterns is needed to better understand habitat use or association between the species. Using camera traps, we studied the temporal activity patterns, and quantified for the first time the temporal overlap and spatial co-occurrence between species. Our results show that: (i) Two species are strongly diurnal: Cephalophus leucogaster, and Philantomba congica, (ii) two species are mostly diurnal: C.callipygus and C. nigrifrons, (iii) one species is strongly nocturnal: C.castaneus, (iv) and one species is mostly nocturnal: C.silvicultor. Analyses of temporal activities (for five species) identified four species pairs that highly overlapped (Δ^≥ 0.80), and six pairs that weakly overlapped (Δ^ between 0.06 and 0.35). Finally, co-occurrence tests reveal a truly random co-occurrence (plt > 0.05 and pgt > 0.05) for six species pairs, and a positive co-occurrence (pgt < 0.05) for four pairs. Positive co-occurrences are particularly noted for pairs formed by C.callipygus with the other species (except C. nigrifrons). These results are essential for a better understanding of the coexistence of duikers and the ecology of poorly known species (C. leucogaster and C. nigrifrons), and provide clarification on the activity patterns of C. silvicultor which was subject to controversy. Camera traps proved then to be a powerful tool for studying the activity patterns of free-ranging duiker populations.

Seed production and persistence of the Carnamah, Northam A, Dwalganup, and Geraldton strains of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) were examined in undefoliated swards in the wheatbelt of Western Australia. The early flowering characteristic of Carnamah was not always associated with higher seed yields. Only when there was a well-defined, early finish to the growing season, or when flowering was very much earlier in Carnamah (viz., following an early 'break' to the season), did this strain clearly outyield both Northam A and Geraldton. The seed yield of Dwalganup was generally inferior to that of the other strains. Factors affecting regeneration are discussed. Under low rainfall conditions, poorer germination-regulation of Carnamah, compared with Geraldton and Northam A, would be expected to result in poorer persistence unless offset by higher seed yields in the Carnamah strain.

Calyptrogyne ghiesbreghtiana Linden ex. H. Wendl. is an understorey palm that occurs at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. In this paper I combine analysis of natural variation and results of experimental manipulations to ask (1) what limits seed production? and (2) what processes cause variation in seed production by C. ghiesbreghtiana? The number of seed produced per inflorescence ofC. ghiesbreghtiana was limited substantially by the loss of female flowers to floral herbivores. Much variation in the number of seed produced perinflorescence of C. ghiesbreghtiana was due to losses of developing fruits to predators. Together these phenomena illustrate the influential role of natural enemies in the reproductive success of this plant. Seed-set efficiency (number of seeds/number of female flowers) was highly variable in this species, and such high levels of variation appear to be common in other species. For species with highly variable seed-set efficiency, the role of resource allocation to flower production in determining differences in seed production among individual plants is likely to be relatively small.
