This monograph describes the genus Phyllachora as it occurs on members of the Gramineae, discusses the reliability of criteria for delimiting species, and gives a taxonomic account of the Phyllachora species found on grasses. A world-wide survey of graminicolous Phyllachora specimens has led to the conclusion that of the 278 species and varieties named in the literature, only 95 are valid species and a further 21 are doubtful species. Of the 95 valid species, three (P. americana, P, longinaviculata, and P. microsperma) have been given new names, and five (P. bulbosa, P. koondrookensis, P. platyelliptica, P. polytocae, and P. rostellispora) are new species. Two species complexes are discussed. The P. fallax complex includes four species which, although fairly readily separated, have several features in common and may be better delimited in future as varieties. The P. shiraiana complex includes seven bambusicolous species, few of which have been seen by the author, and the published descriptions of which are closely similar. It is possible that six of these species are synonyms of P. shiraiana s. str. A key to graminicolous Phyllachora species and a guide to its uses are provided as well as a host index, including 135 grass genera, and an index to Phyllachora species, their synonyms, and doubtful species.

The genus Episcepsis Butler, 1877 is widely distributed in the Neotropical region and currently includes 43 valid species many of them described solely based on external morphology. The existence of species complexes makes their identification difficult without examination of genital morphology. Four new species from Brazil, Cuba and Peru are described herein; Episcepsis andina sp. nov., E. diversa sp. nov., E. insularis sp. nov. and E. travassosi sp. nov. Comparisons with other similar species as well as photographs of external morphology and male genitalia are provided.

The genus Eois Hübner (Geometridae: Larentiinae) comprises 254 valid species, 217 of which were described from the Neotropics and 31 of those having their type locality in Brazil. Since this species rich genus has never been revised, and may potentially include many cryptic undescribed species, Eois embodies a problematic taxonomic scenario. The actual diversity of Eois is greatly underestimated and the Brazilian fauna is poorly known, both because of inadequate sampling and because of the potential existence of cryptic species "hidden" within some nominal taxa. In this study we investigated the diversity within a cryptic species complexes associated to the E. pallidicosta and E. odatis clades. We describe three new species Eois oya Moraes & Montebello sp. nov., Eois ewa Moraes & Stanton sp. nov., and Eois oxum Moraes & Freitas sp. nov., in an integrative taxonomy approach, using morphology, host plant use and species delimitation tools.

AbstractThree species complexes (pallidiventris, chlorea, and geniculata) of Pristiphora Latreille are recognized from China. Two new species of Pristiphora from Nanking (Nanching), China, are described: P. sinensis n. sp., which is closely related to the Holarctic species P. geniculata (Hartig); and P. nankingensis n. sp., which belongs in the chlorea complex with P. fausta (Hartig), P. chlorea (Norton), and P. borneensis Forsius. P. formosana Rohwer and P. sauteri Rohwer from Taiwan (Formosa), together with P. zella Rohwer, P. pallidiventris (Fallén), and P. denudata Konow, belong in the pallidiventris complex. The lancets of the southeast Asian species of Pristiphora not illustrated by Benson (1963) are shown. Keys to adult females of species in the pallidiventris and chlorea complexes, and the separation of adult males and females of P. geniculata and P. sinensis n. sp., are presented. P. denudata is considered to be a valid species, not a subspecies of P. pallidiventris.

Abstract. A very diverse ostracod fauna was discovered in the latest Permian strata of the Dongpan section, southwestern Guangxi, South China. Fifty-one species belonging to twenty-eight genera were identified and described, including two new species (Bairdia dongpanensis n. sp. and Spinomicrocheilinella anterocompressa n. sp). This type of assemblage, with nineteen palaeopsychrospheric species and four pelagic species, is the first world-wide deep-water ostracod fauna reported from the latest Permian strata and the first one recorded in the Permian of China. The palaeoenvironmental analysis allows one to propose an evaluation of the bathymetry variation along the Dongpan section.

AbstractAn assemblage of 50 species of small shelly fossils is described from Cambrian Series 2 (Stage 4) strata in North Greenland, the present day northernmost part of the paleocontinent of Laurentia. The fossils are derived from the basal member of the Aftenstjernesø Formation at Navarana Fjord, northern Lauge Koch Land, a condensed unit that accumulated in a sediment-starved outer ramp setting in the transarctic Franklinian Basin, on the Innuitian margin of Laurentia. Most other small shelly fossil assemblages of similar age and composition from North America are described from the Iapetan margin of Laurentia, from North-East Greenland south to Pennsylvania. Trilobites are uncommon, but include Serrodiscus. The Australian bradoriid Spinospitella is represented by a complete shield. Obolella crassa is the only common brachiopod. Hyoliths, including Cassitella, Conotheca, Neogloborilus, and Triplicatella, are abundant and diverse, but most are represented just by opercula. Sclerites interpreted as stem-group aculiferans (sachitids) are conspicuous, including Qaleruaqia, the oldest described paleoloricate, Ocruranus?, Inughuitoconus n. gen., and Hippopharangites. Helcionelloid mollusks are diverse, but not common; they are associated with numerous specimens of the bivalve Pojetaia runnegari. The fauna compares best with that of the upper Bastion Formation of North-East Greenland, the Forteau Formation of western Newfoundland, and the Browns Pond Formation of New York, but several taxa have a world-wide distribution. Many specimens are encrusted with crystals of authigenic albite. Abstract Among Antarctic amphipods of the genus Eusirus, a highly distinctive clade of giant species is characterized by a dorsal, blade-shaped tooth on pereionites 5–7 and pleonites 1–3. This lineage, herein named ‘crested Eusirus’, includes two potential species complexes, the Eusirus perdentatus and Eusirus giganteus complexes, in addition to the more distinctive Eusirus propeperdentatus. Molecular phylogenies and statistical parsimony networks (COI, CytB and ITS2) of crested Eusirus are herein reconstructed. This study aims to formally revise species diversity within crested Eusirus by applying several species delimitation methods (Bayesian implementation of the Poisson tree processes model, general mixed Yule coalescent, multi-rate Poisson tree processes and automatic barcode gap discovery) on the resulting phylogenies. In addition, results from the DNA-based methods are benchmarked against a detailed morphological analysis of all available specimens of the E. perdentatus complex. Our results indicate that species diversity of crested Eusirus is underestimated. Overall, DNA-based methods suggest that the E. perdentatus complex is composed of three putative species and that the E. giganteus complex includes four or five putative species. The morphological analysis of available specimens from the E. perdentatus complex corroborates molecular results by identifying two differentiable species, the genuine E. perdentatus and a new species, herein described as Eusirus pontomedon sp. nov.

AbstractA new nematode species Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) sciaenidicola sp. nov. is described based on specimens collected from the Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest) and the Argentine croaker Umbrina canosai Berg, from coastal waters of Argentina and Brazil. These nematodes were firstly identified as D. (C.) elongatus (Törnquist, 1931), a commonly reported species from M. furnieri in South American Atlantic waters. However, other species of Dichelyne have so far been reported from this host in the same area, namely D. (C.) rodriguesi (Pinto, Fábio et Noronha, 1970), D. (C.) amaruincai (Freitas, Vicente et Ibañez, 1969) and D. (Dichelyne) micropogonii Pereira et Costa, 1996. A careful re-examination of these parasites, as well as of type specimens of all species reported from M. furnieri, revealed that these nematodes represented a new species. The new species is distinguished from most of its congeners by having papillae 5–7 and 9 forming a subventral line close to cloaca, this feature is shared with other 6 species [D. (C.) dichelyneformis (Szidat, 1950), D. (C.) fraseri (Baylis, 1929), D. (C.) abbreviatus (Rudolphi, 1819), D. (C.) adriaticus (Törnquist, 1931), D. (C.) minutus (Rudolphi, 1819) and D. (C.) mariajuliae Alarcos, Timi, Etchegoin et Sardella, 2006)], which are readily distinguished by their body size, spicules length, distribution patterns of other papillae and position of the excretory pore and deirids. Also, D. (C.) elongatus from Umbrina canariensis (Valenciennes) from West Africa is established as a new species Dichelyne (Cucullanellus) yvonnecampanae sp. nov.; D. (C.) amaruincai from Pacific waters is considered as a valid species, D. (D.) micropogonii is regarded as species inquirendae and D. (C.) rodriguesi is identified as Cucullanus sp.

Abstract An identification key to ten valid species of Paurodontella is given. A compendium of the most important diagnostic characters with illustrations of each species is included as a practical alternative and supplement to the key. The diagnosis of Paurodontella is emended and a list of all valid species of the genus is given. Two new species (Paurodontella myceliophaga n. sp. and P. balochistanica n. sp.) collected around the roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) from North-West Frontier Province and Balochistan, Pakistan, are described and illustrated. Paurodontella myceliophaga n. sp. is characterised by having a short post-uterine sac, lateral field with four incisures, excretory pore at the base of the pharynx and fusiform median bulb, whereas P. balochistanica n. sp. has a longer and very slender body with posterior vulva, lateral field with four incisures and short mucronate tail. Because these species are limited in distribution, their importance is not known.

AbstractThe Nearctic Idiocerini exclusive of the fauna of the Sonoran subregion are reviewed. The 68 recognized species are assigned to three genera: Idiocerus Lewis, Rhytidodus Fieber, and Balcanocerus Maldonado-Capriles. Three subgenera of Idiocerus are recognized, including I. (Liocratus) Dub. and I. (Populicerus) Dlab. (n. stat). Sahlbergotettix Zvk., 1953, Viridicerus Dlab., 1974, Tremulicerus Dlab., 1974, and Acericerus Dlab., 1974 are synonymized with Idiocerus Lewis, 1834.Sixteen new species of Idiocerus are described: aureus, carolina, cedrus, freytagi, gillettei, immaculatus, inebrius, iodes, lucidae, midas, pericallis, taiga, unicolor, vanduzeei, venosus, and xanthiops. I. varions n. n. is created for varias DeLong & Hershberger, 1947 (nec Germar, 1818). I. lunaris Ball (n. stat.), I. obsoletus (Wlk.) (n. stat.), and I. raphus Freytag (n. stat.) are recognized as valid species for the first time. Twelve other species are removed from synonymy. I. verrucosus Ball is placed as a subspecies of I. musteus Ball (n. stat.). Five new synonymies are created: alnirubratus Bliven, 1955 = I. couleanus Ball & Pkr., 1946; nigrens DeL. & Cld., 1937 = I. distinctus Gill & Bak., 1895; duzeei Prov., 1890 and vagus Ball, 1902 = obsoletus Walker, 1851; and apertus DeL & Hbr., 1947 = I. verticis (Say), 1831.Additional characters of the male antennae, male abdominal apodemes, and female ovipositor are described and illustrated. The phylogeny and hosts of the members of Idiocerus are discussed. Keys are provided to the genera of the Nearctic Idiocerini, and to the species of Idiocerus of the Nearctic region, exclusive of the Sonoran subregion, for both sexes.

The infauna of Chabahar Bay (Iranian Coast of the Gulf of Oman) was investigated using shallow water (less than 10 m) grab-samples between June 2013 and March 2014. The magelonid fauna of these samples was studied and prioritized, with four species being present:M. fauchaldisp. nov.,M. symmetrica, M.cf.cinctaandM. crenulifrons. The new species differs from all known magelonid species within the Persian Gulf region in possessing polydentate abdominal hooks. A fifth species, currently undescribed, was also found. The validity ofM. pulchellaoriginally described from Kuwait is discussed in light of its closeness toM. crenulifrons. The main distinguishing feature between the two species is the presence or absence of crenulation of the anterior prostomial margin, a character shown to be variable inM. crenulifrons. Although differences between the type specimens of both species suggestsM. pulchellato be a valid species, examination of further material and DNA analysis is needed.
