Botanical contributions of the Northern Australia regional survey. I. Studies on Northern Australian species of Eucalyptus

This is the first botanical contribution from the C.S.I.R.O. Northern Australia Regional Survey. Revised accounts of 50 species with discussions on taxonomy, distribution, and typification of names are the result of a partial revision of the genus Eucalyptus as represented in the northern part of Australia; keys to two groups particularly studied are given. All the 42 species known from the northern part of the Northern Territory are treated, with three keys to their identification; the first of these is based on characters observable in the field, the second on hand specimens with buds and flowers, and the third on hand specimens with fruits only. New criteria for the discrimination of species have been used, and some examples of their application are shown graphically; these include the number of lateral veins in the leaf, the ratio of its length to its breadth, and (to some extent) the exact distance of the intramarginal vein from the margin and the shape of the free part of the calyx-tube of the flower. The juvenile stages, flowers, fruits, and seeds are described for the first time for some species. Types of all names, with the herbaria in which they are to be found, are cited, with reference to published figures, some of which appear for the first time in this paper. Several lectotypes are designated, and the guiding principles adopted for their selection are described. Citations of specimens are restricted to those collected in 1946-9 on the Northern Australia Regional Survey, to types, new records, and some critical collections. Distribution maps of 51 species are based on all specimens examined. Plates from photographs illustrate the characteristic habit of some species, the deciduous nature of some, a few characteristic barks, various type specimens and some other specimens cited in taxonomic discussions. The status of about 160 names was investigated. Among others, E. clavigera A. Cunn. ex Schau., E. polycarpa F. Muell., E. terminalis F. Muell., E. foelscheana F. Muell., and E. racernosa Cav. are shown to have been originally applied to species different from those currently passing under these names. Many names are treated as synonyms on taxonomic grounds, 24 of them for the first time. All nomenclatural changes are summarized in two tables. One new species, E. porrecta S. T. Blake, and one new combination, E. gilbertensis (Maiden & Blakely) S. T. Blake, are proposed. The following species are new records for the areas mentioned: E. Izerbertiana and E. cliftoniana (Northern Territory) ; E. aspera and E. ferruginea (Queensland) ; E. bigalerita and E. patellaris (Western Australia) ; and E. dichromophloia (South Australia). In an appendix, the graphical methods and distribution maps are discussed and some remarks made on the phylogeny and history of distribution of the genus.

This is an account of portion of the botanical collections of the Northern Australia Regional Survey, 1946–47, chiefly from the Darwin–Katherine area. Families fully considered are Anacardiaceae, Aquifoliaceae, Araceae, Barringtoniaceae, Burseraceae, Casuarinaceae, Cochlospermaceae, Lauraceae, Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae, Leguminosae-Mimosoideae (except Acacia), Meliaceae, Myristicaceae, Nymphaeaceae, Palmae, Pandanaceae, Passifloraceae, Pittosporaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rhizophoraceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, Sonneratiaceae, and Sphenocleaceae. A few species of the following families are also discussed: Combretaceae, Cyperaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Gramineae, Leguminosae-Papilionatae, and Moraceae. In addition to discussions on taxonomy, synonymy, and orthography of names, the following additions to the flora of the Northern Territory are recorded: new species: Dendrolobiunz stipatum, Desmodizim polyneurum, Horsfieldia australiana, Sclerandrittm grandiflorum, and Vavaea australiana; species not previously recorded from Australia: Mimosa acanthocarpa, Pistia stratiotes, and Sphenoclea xeylanica; species already known from other parts of Australia: Albixia canescens, Casuarina cunninghamiana, Colubrina asiatica, Cryptocarya cunninghamii, Cyperus platystylis, Cyperus ramosii, Hymenachne amplexicaulis, Neptunia gracilis, Passiflora foetida, and Petalostigma banksii. Two new names are proposed, Eulalia mackinlayi (F. Muell.) S. T. Blake and Terminalia ferdinandiana Exell. The genera Horsfieldia, Pistia, Sphenoclea, and Vavaea have not previously been recorded from Australia and Albixia, Colubrina, Cryptocarya, Dendrolobium, Hymenachne, and Mimosa have not previously been recorded from the Northern Territory. Sphenoclea represents a new family (Sphenocleaceae) for Australia. Cochlospermum fraseri, Cryptocarya cunninghamii, and Sphenoclea xeylanica are also recorded for the first time from Queensland. The following reductions to synonymy are made: Alectryon bleeseri O. Schwartz to Cupaniopsis alliacardioides (A. Rich.) Radlk.; Barringtonia denticulata (Miers) Knuth to B. gracilis (Miers) Knuth, which is treated as distinct from B. aczttangula (L.) Gaertn.; Buchanania oblongifolia W. V. Fitzg. and B. muelleri Engl. var. pilosa Engl. to B. obovata Engl.; Buchanania muelleri Engl. to B. arborescens (BI.) Bl.; Ilex peduncularis F. Muell. to I . arnhemensis (F. Muell.) Loes.; and Pandanus delestangii Martelli to P. aquaticus F. Muell.

The status of the 20 genera comprising at least 60 species of Sciomyzidae known from China is reviewed. Ten genera are recorded for the first time from China. A diagnostic key to all genera known from China is provided along with figures of the main characters. The geographic distribution of every genus known from China is discussed and distribution maps are presented. Recorded for the first time in the Oriental Region are 2 genera (Coremacera Rondani, 1856 and Pherbina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) and 5 species (in Dichetophora Rondani, 1868, Pherbellia Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830, and Tetanocera Duméril, 1800). Euthycera meleagris Hendel, 1933, previously synonymized with Dichetophora meleagris (Hendel, 1933), is resurrected as a valid name. Pherbellia brevistriata Li, Yang & Gu, 2001 is placed as a junior synonym of Pherbellia nana reticulata (Thomson, 1869). Reported for the first time are the female of Pherbellia ditoma Steyskal, 1956 and the male of Pherbellia orientalis Rozkošný & Knutson, 1991, both discovered in China during this study.

The pygmy water boatmen (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Micronectidae) of continental Australiaare revised. The two genera and 17 species occurring in Australiaare fully described and keyed. The following species are transferred to Austronecta gen. nov.: Micronecta australiensis Chen, M. micra Kirklady, and M. carinata Chen. Austronecta bartzarum, sp. nov., is newly described. Within Micronecta Kirkaldy, thirteen species are recorded, including M. paragoga sp. nov. The following new synonymies are proposed: Micronecta illiesi Wróblewski, Micronecta concordia King and Micronecta dixonia King are junior synonyms of Micronecta annae Kirkaldy. A lectotype is designated for Micronecta tasmanica Wróblewski. Micronecta ludibunda Breddin is newly recorded for Australia, based on one male examined from Queensland. Within Australia, range extensions are recorded for the following species: Austronecta australiensis (New South Wales, Queensland); A. micra (Western Australia); Micronecta lansburyi Wróblewski (Western Australia); M. adelaidae Chen (Western Australia); M. major Chen (Queensland); M. halei Chen (South Australia); M. virgata Hale (Northern Territory); M. quadristrigata Breddin (Northern Territory); and M. queenslandica Chen (Northern Territory). All species are described and illustrated. Discussion and documentation of all primary type material is provided and where available, type specimens are illustrated. All male genitalic structures are illustrated with scanning electron micrographs. Line drawings are included for all other diagnostic characters, along with color habitus illustrations for both sexes of all species. Distribution maps are included for the following species: Austronecta micra, A. bartzarum, Micronecta paragoga, M. lansburyi, M. adelaidae, M. major, M. virgata, M. halei, M. quadrstrigata, and M. queenslandica. Diagnostic morphology and variation is discussed for all treated species. A phylogenetic analysis of Australasian micronectid generic relationships is presented. Discussion is provided on zoogeographic relationships of Australian Micronectidae.

A new species and eight new subspecies of Papilionoidea discovered in Vietnam between 2002 and 2020 are described and illustrated. The status of two taxa are revised. New taxa include Pieridae: Delias sanaca bidoupa Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. and Talbotia naganum aurelia Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov.; Nymphalidae: Abrota ganga pulcheria Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Bassarona recta consonensis Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Pantoporia bieti aurantina Monastyrskii & To subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata cristata Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Ragadia latifasciata crystallina Monastyrskii & Vu, subspec. nov.; Faunis indistincta luctus Monastyrskii & Vu subspec. nov. & Aemona gialaica Monastyrskii, K. Saito & Vu, spec. nov. The taxon infuscata Devyatkin & Monastyrskii, previously described as the subspecies Aemona tonkinensis infuscata, was elevated to the species level, while the taxon critias (Ragadia critias Riley & Godfrey) was reduced to a subspecies. Three Satyrinae species were recorded from Vietnam for the first time: Palaeonympha opalina Butler, 1871; Ypthima motschulskyi Bremer & Grey, 1853; and Ragadia latifasciata Leech, 1891.

The knowledge on the diversity of the genus Patrera Simon in Colombia is widely expanded. P. auricoma (L. Koch, 1866) and P. armata (Chickering, 1940) are redescribed and their females are described for the first time and recorded from Cundinamarca and Meta departments, respectively. Aysha strandi (Caporiacco, 1947) is synonymized with P. armata. Three species groups in the genus Patrera are proposed to include the bulk of its species (fulvastra, florezi, and philipi). These groups are diagnosed based on sexual characters. Twenty-five new species are herein described, illustrated and mapped: P. anchicaya n. sp. (♂♀); P. barbacoas n. sp. (♂); P. borjai n. sp. (♂♀); P. danielae n. sp. (♂♀); P. dimar n. sp. (♂♀); P. perafani n. sp. (♂♀); P. platnicki n. sp. (♂); P. quillacinga n. sp. (♂♀), and P. ramirezi n. sp. (♂♀) into the fulvastra species group. P. bonaldoi n. sp. (♂♀); P. boteroi n. sp. (♂); P. carvalhoi n. sp. (♂♀); P. florezi n. sp. (♂♀); P. perijaensis n. sp. (♀); P. quimbaya n. sp. (♂♀); P. sampedroi n. sp. (♂); P. yukpa n. sp. (♂♀), and P. wiwa n. sp. (♂♀) in florezi species group. P. sutu n. sp. (♂); P. chucurui n. sp. (♂♀); P. dawkinsi n. sp. (♂); P. dentata n. sp. (♂); P. dracula n. sp. (♂); P. kuryi n. sp. (♂♀), and P. longitibialis n. sp. (♂) in philipi species group. We also briefly discuss some aspects of the species groups’ genital morphology, based on a comparison with the type, P. fulvastra Simon. Additionally, distribution maps for all Colombian species including new records for P. armata (Chickering, 1940), P. auricoma (L. Koch, 1866) and P. suni Dupérré & Tapia, 2016 from Cundinamarca, Meta and Nariño departments are also herein included.

One hundred forty-six species of Gelechiidae including 36 new records are reported from Israel. Anarsia balioneura Meyrick, 1921 and Polyhymno chionarcha Meyrick, 1913 are recorded for the first time in the Palaearctic region. Two new species are described: Metzneria freidbergi sp. nov., and Scrobipalpa aravensis sp. nov. Six new synonyms are established: Stygmatoptera Hartig, 1936 syn. nov. of Polyhymno Chambers, 1874; Eulamprotes Bradley, 1971 syn. nov. of Oxypteryx Rebel, 1911; Polyhymno abaiella Amsel, 1974 syn. nov. of Polyhymno chionarcha, Meyrick, 1913; Gelechia haifella Amsel, 1935 syn. nov. of Athrips rancidella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854); Sophronia catharurga Meyrick, 1923 and Sophronia parahumerella Amsel, 1935 syn. nov. of Pseudosophronia exustellus (Zeller, 1847). New or additional host plants are recorded for Metzneria aspretella Lederer, 1869, M. agraphella (Ragonot, 1895), M. ehikeella Gozmány, 1954 and Scrobipalpa suaedivorella (Chrétien, 1915). Photographs of the type specimens of most taxa described from Israel and Palestine are presented. The following species are removed from the list of Gelechiidae of Israel: Nothris sulcella Staudinger, 1879, N. skyvai Karsholt & Šumpich, 2015, Anarsia spartiella Schrank, 1802, Megacraspedus cerussatellus Rebel, 1930, Oxypteryx atrella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Isophrictis anthemidella (Wocke, 1871), Metzneria metzneriella (Stainton, 1851), Scrobipalpa otregata Povolný, 1972, Scrobipalpa nitentella (Fuchs, 1902), Scrobipalpa remota Povolný, 1972, Scrobipalpa salinella (Zeller, 1847) and Ephysteris diminutella (Zeller, 1847). Moreover, Stomopteryx remissella (Zeller, 1847) is recorded as new to the Altai Mountains of Russia, Anarsia balioneura Meyrick, 1921 is new to Cyprus and Libya, Polyhymno dumonti (Hartig, 1936) is new to Libya and Sudan, Scrobipalpa superstes is new to Greece, Stenolechia gemmella (Linnaeus, 1758) is new to Jordan and Polyhymno chionarcha is new to Saudi Arabia.

The status of two supposedly myrmecophilous Australian 'Glyptoma' species described by A. M. Lea is reviewed, and lectotypes designated for both species. A new genus, Myrmelibia, is proposed for Glyptoma kingi Lea of south-eastern Australia. This genus is not related to Glyptoma or Thoracophorus, but belongs near the genera Eulibia, Heterotrochinus and Holotrochidius of the Oriental-Indian Ocean region. New records confirm that M. kingi is one of the few truly myrmecophilous osoriines, probably host-specific with Zridomyrmex nitidus Mayr (Hymenoptera : Formicidae : Dolichoderinae). Glyptoma myrmecophilum Lea is transferred to the genus Thoracophorus as a senior synonym of T. quadricostatus Bernhauer (new synonymy); present evidence suggests it is free-living and subcortical, not myrmecophilous. A key to all 16 genera of Osoriinae (sensu Blackwelder) known to occur in Australia is presented, along with the names, distribution and microhabitat of Australian species included in each genus. Four genera (Allotrochus, Arpagonus, Espeson, and Saegerius) are reported from Australia for the first time, each based on undescribed species from northern Queensland.

A revision of the genus Macromalthinus resulted on recognition of twelve species, six of which are herein proposed as new: Macromalthinus belemensis Brancucci, 1981, M. brasiliensis (Pic, 1906), M. globuliventris Brancucci, 1981, M. guyanensis sp. nov., M. luteoapicalis sp. nov., M. maximiceps Pic, 1919, M. orapuensis sp. nov., M. piceiventris sp. nov., M. quadratithorax sp. nov., M. santaremensis Brancucci, 1981, M. schmidli Constantin, 2010 and M. xerophilus sp. nov. No taxonomic changes were necessary in the previously described species, which are distinguished through differential diagnosis and an updated identification key. The type specimens of all species were revisited and their photographs are provided. Discussions on the diagnostic character of each species, general morphology and the first description of wings and female genitalia of Macromalthinus are presented, as well as the first description of the female of M. maximiceps Pic, 1919. Finally, new records and distribution maps are presented for all species.

Based on two specimens collected in the Antarctic deep-sea (4928 m) the adult female and male of the genusPseudolamprops Gamô, 1989 are described for the first time. A new combination is proposed, Pseudolamprops profundus(Reyss, 1978) comb. nov., and several new records from the North Atlantic and Antarctica are provided. The diagnosis of Pseudolamprops is revised on the account of the new material available.

AbstractThis paper presents the first records of the parasitic copepod Caligus furcisetifer Redkar, Rangnekar et Murti, 1949 beyond Indian waters, specifically, on the body surface and head of the critically endangered largetooth sawfish (commonly referred to as the freshwater sawfish in Australia), Pristis microdon Latham, 1794 (Elasmobranchii, Pristidae), in brackish tidal waters of the Fitzroy River in the Kimberley region of Western Australia and the Leichhardt River in the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Queensland. This represents a geographic range extension of ∼8000 km for this parasite. Further, it is only the second member of the genus Caligus to be found on an elasmobranch host in Western Australia and it is the first time this species has been reported from the Southern Hemisphere. Male biased dispersal of P. microdon may be the vector in which the parasite has dispersed from India across to northern Australia, or vice versa. A decline in populations of the critically endangered P. microdon (and possibly other pristid species) in these regions may lead to a concomitant decline in their parasite fauna.
