Floral development in Daviesia cordata (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae: Mirbelieae) and its systematic implications

The floral development of Daviesia cordata Smith is studied by the use of scanning electron microscopy. This is the first study of a member of Mirbelieae. Although organ initiation in Papilionoideae is said to be almost uniformly unidirectional from the abaxial to the adaxial side, the presented floral development shows striking differences from this mode. Sepals, petals and the antepetalous stamens are initiated in simultaneous whorls, which is seen as a consequence of harmonisation of the plastochrons within the whorls. The antesepalous stamens are initiated unidirectional from the adaxial to the abaxial side, which is the reversed direction of the common mode of Papilionoideae. This is the first record of reversed unidirectionality in Papilionoideae, which can be linked with isolated findings in Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae. Concerning developmental aspects, the results seem to link the papilionoid flower closer to those of Caesalpinioideae and Mimosoideae. Further developmental studies are necessary to broaden the data matrix for a detailed phylogenetic analysis.

The investigations were carried out using light and scanning electron microscopy. The flowers of <i>Elaeagnus commutata</i> grow in clusters of 1-4 in the leaf axils. They are actinomorphic, four-lobed, with a single perianth that is yellow from the adaxial side, while the abaxial side is silvery-white. Peltate hairs of different structure are found on both surfaces of the sepals. The conical epidermal cells of the lobes are covered with a thick striated cuticle. Cylindrical hairs were observed on the edges of the lobes. Peltate hairs also grew on the style. The dish-shaped nectary gland is located at the base of the style. Nectar is secreted through numerous, evenly distributed stomata located above or at the level of other epidermal cells. Different stages of stomatal development are evidence of the asynchronous functioning of the stomata. The nectary consists of small epidermal cells and 5-6 layers of secretory parenchyma. The deeper layers of the gland are composed of larger cells of subglandular parenchyma in which vascular bundles supplying the nectary run. Honey bees were the main pollinators of silverberry. Ten silverberry flowers produced an average of 12 g of nectar with a sugar concentration in the 29.5-34.5% range. The weight of pollen produced by 10 flowers was 3.33 mg.

Investigations by scanning electron microscopy have revealed that ingestion of Rosalina floridana (Cushman) and Quinqueloculina seminulum (Linné) (Foraminiferida) by the common periwinkle Littorina littorea Linné results in severe etching of the surface veneer in the rotalids studied, and removal of the surface veneer and partial dissolution of the underlying tabular layer of calcite in the miliolids examined. The acidic nature of the digestive juices is suggested as the agent responsible for this phenomenon. Observations of test wall construction is compared to current models of calcite secretion.

Floral initiation and development in relation to time of flowering were investigated in Banksia baxteri and B. hookeriana with the aid of scanning electron microscopy. Floral initiation occurred in spring in B. baxteri and in early summer in B. hookeriana. Floral development was rapid in B. baxteri (3 months to reach anthesis in summer). In B. hookeriana, development took 5 months, with anthesis occurring in winter. Most B. hookeriana blooms were produced on 2-year-old shoots, while B. baxteri produced about half of its blooms on 2-year-old shoots and almost as many on 3-year-old shoots. In both species, shoots that flowered within 2 years were longer and thicker in their first year than other shoots. A critical minimum stem length was determined for the first year's growth, to be used as a criterion for determining which shoots to remove during pruning. Details are provided for the timing of pruning to achieve maximum bloom production in B. baxteri and B. hookeriana.

Morphology at different developmental stages was investigated by dissection and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in five sedges: Eleocharis (three species) and Schoenoplectus (both Cyperoideae, Scirpeae), and Lepidosperma (Caricoideae, Schoeneae). In each case all the perianth segments (scales or bristles) were positioned outside the staminal primordia or stamens, consistent with classical interpretations of flowers. Putative exceptions and previous alternative interpretations of floral morphology in the Cyperaceae are discussed. SEM developmental studies of Hypolytreae (e.g. Scirpodendron) are needed for further clarification of interpretative floral/inflorescence morphology in the family.

The early stages of development of the inflorescence of Anthurium jenmanii Engl. were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The inflorescence of A. jenmanii consists of more than 100 flowers arranged in recognizable spirals. Each flower has four broad tepals enclosing four stamens that are not visible prior to anthesis. The gynoecium consists of two carpels. The floral primordia are first initiated on the lower portion of the inflorescence, they then increase in size and appear as transversely extended bulges. The two lateral tepals are the first organs to be initiated, followed shortly thereafter by the two median tepals. The two lateral stamens are initiated first, directly opposite the lateral tepals, and are followed by two median stamens initiated directly opposite the median tepals. A two-lobed stigma is clearly visible during the early stages of development of the gynoecium. On some of the young inflorescences, all floral parts were covered by extracellular calcium oxalate crystals. The release of these prismatic crystals occurs before the stamens and petals have reached maturity. The mode of floral development observed in Anthurium has similarities with that reported for Gymnostachys . However, contrary to Gymnostachys, the development of the flower of A. jenmanii is not unidirectional.

Abstract The micromorphological features of the fruit surfaces of nine species of Ukrainian flora, namely Valeriana tuberosa L., Valeriana tripteris L., Valeriana rossica P. Smirn., Valeriana stolonifera Czern., Valeriana grossheimii Worosch, Valeriana sambucifolia Mikan fil., Valeriana officinalis L. s. str., Valeriana wolgensis Kazak. [ Valeriana officinalis var. nitida (Kreyer) Rostanski], and Valeriana simplicifolia (Rchb.) Kabath, were examined. Depending on the presence and localization of pubescence on the surface of the fruit, three groups of species were distinguished: those with glabrous fruits, those with fruits pubescent only on the adaxial side, and those with fruits pubescent on both sides. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the additional characteristics of the fruits (microsculpture of the fruit surface, shape of cuticular formations on the surface of the outer periclinal walls of epidermal cells and on the surface of hairs, and structure of the stomatal complex), which were useful for the identification of the species. At the supraspecific level, the revealed features of the fruit surfaces somewhat overlapped and could be used to identify series and sections only as additional features. Based on the studied samples from herbarium material (KW), V. officinalis var. nitida was considered synonymous with V. wolgensis since there were no micromorphological differences between their fruits. The detailed micromorphological characteristics of the fruit surfaces of all the studied species can be used for further comparative morphological investigations of different aerial parts to identify stable features independent of geographic and ecological conditions.

Here we present results of our study on the leaf blades epidermis using scanning electron microscopy for 16species of Festuca from Altai. The factor analysis of mixed data revealed markedly differentiated groups according to theirsectional devision. This result supports the previous phylogenetic findings in the genus, except the section Aulaxyper. Thestudy also demonstrates the importance of the abaxial side of leaves in taxonomic treatment of the species, specifically theshape of long cells and silicon bodies, as well as the location of the latter.

Molluscum contagiosum is unique among the viral induced growths of the skin. Unlike other viral tumors, the molluscum contagiosum lesion is a mass made up of myriads of free, discrete virions. It is not a proliferating growth of epidermal keratinocytes such as one observes in the common wart. There is no better way to perceive the nature of this tumor mass than by scanning electron microscopy.Skin lesions of molluscum contagiosum were excised from patients and immediately fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde. After fixation the specimens were rinsed in Millonig’s Phosphate buffer. The entire lesion was than cross-sectioned with a razor blade, postfixed in 1% OsO4, rinsed again in buffer, dehydrated in grading ETOH, critical point dried, positioned on an aluminum stub and gold-coated. Examination was made using a JEOL SEM (JSM-35).

Abstract In November 2014 and May 2015, a total of 44 specimens of the South American silver croaker Plagioscion squamosissimus were collected: 30 in Marajó Bay and 14 in the Tapajós River, state of Pará, Brazil. The aim was to investigate the presence of anisakid nematodes and determine their parasitism indices and sites of infection, because of their importance regarding health inspection. Sixty-nine Anisakis sp. larvae were found; among them, 16 larvae in seven fish collected in Marajó Bay and 53 larvae in four fish in the Tapajós River. The parasitism indices of the nematodes collected from the fish in Marajó Bay comprised prevalence (P) of 23%, mean infection intensity (MI) of 2.28, mean abundance (MA) of 0.53, range of infection (RI) of 1-4, and infection site (IS) in the mesentery. The fish from the Tapajós River showed P = 28%, MI = 13.2, MA = 3.8, RI = 1-22, and IS = mesentery and intestine. To assist in taxonomic identification, images of the specimens obtained through optical microscopy with Nomarski's interferential contrast system and scanning electron microscopy were used. This is the first record of Anisakis sp. parasitizing P. squamosissimus.
