The status of the Australian species of Agathis Salisb. is reviewed. Although only three species are involved, there has been a considerable amount of nomenclatural confusion. One new species is described from north Queensland, A. atropurpurea Hyland. A. palmerstonii F. Muell. is a synonym of A. robusta (C. Moore ex F. Muell.) F.M. Bail.

We describe two new species of forest frogs in the genus Platymantis from the Isabel Island group, Solomon Islands. One new species is a medium-sized, terrestrial form that is morphologically most similar to P. weberi (a widespread Solomon Islands species). The other new species is an arboreal frog that is morphologically similar to Platymantis neckeri (known from Bougainville, Choiseul, and Isabel islands). Both new species possess unique advertisement calls that distinguish them from all sympatric congeners. Because acoustic characteristics function as the primary mate-recognition signals for anuran species, and are therefore an excellent indicator of the status of unique evolutionary lineages, we recognize each as new species. We diagnose both new species on the basis of their distinctive advertisement calls and in the case of the terrestrial form, by differences in body size, body proportions and skin texture. The diversity of ceratobatrachid frogs of the Solomon islands and Bougainville is underestimated and in need of a comprehensive taxonomic review coupled with a standardized survey of acoustic characters.

Ten new species of the genus Cylindromyia Meigen are described and information about the 11 species of this genus previously described has been greatly supplemented. A new key is also provided. This study has shown that the genus is extremely well represented in Australia and more species probably remain to be discovered in each State. Another genus of Cylindromiini, Saralba Walker, has been recorded for Australia for the first time, and one new species of it described.

The genera Hoplopisthius and Carcinopisthius are reviewed. All the species are redescribed and illustrated and an updated identification key and distributional maps are provided. One new species from New Guinea is described (Hoplopisthius maximus n. sp.) and two new synonymies are proposed: Hoplopisthius celebensis Kolbe, 1892 = H. trichemerus Senna, 1892, n. syn. and Carcinopisthius lamingtoni Damoiseau, 1987 = C. forcipitiger Damoiseau, 1987, n. syn. Phylogenetic analysis using PAUP (maximum parsimony) was performed using 25 morphological characters of adults. This analysis shows the group Hoplopisthius + Carcinopisthius is monophyletic, but Carcinopisthius alone is paraphyletic. Nomenclatural changes at the generic level are made to reconcile nomenclature and phylogeny: Hoplopisthius is preserved; Carcinopisthius is downgraded to the rank of subgenus for the two oriental species H. oberthueri and H. fruhstorferi; and Pseudotaphroderes is resurrected as a third subgenus and includes all New-Guinean and Australian species.

The genera Bitomoides van Achterberg, 2004, Neopius Gahan, 1917 and Sternaulopius Fischer, 1965 of the subfamily Opiinae are newly discovered in China and one new species of each genus are described and illustrated, viz. Bitomoides platyaulicis Sheng & Chen sp. n., Neopius citrinus Sheng & Chen, sp. n. and Sternaulopius macrophthalmos Sheng & Chen sp. n. The status of the genus Neopius Gahan is discussed.

In this review of Australian phreodrilid oligochaetes, several descriptions are amended, some species are reclassified and additional distribution data are provided for most species. One new genus (Nesodrilus) and 11 new species (Phreodrilus diemenensis, Phreodrilus melaleucensis, Phreodrilus mitodes, Antarctodrilus acanthaseta, Antarctodrilus micros, Antarctodrilus horwitzi, Nesodrilus southwellensis, Insulodrilus parviseta, Insulodrilus unisetoides, Insulodrilus bifidus and Astacopsidrilus myothyros) are described from Australia. Insulodrilus lacustris (Benham, 1903) is recorded in Australia for the first time, while Phreodrilus mauienensis Brinkhurst, 1971, and Astacopsidrilus campbellianus (Benham, 1909), comb. nov., are removed from the Australian species list. The latter is the first phreodrilid to be recorded on Macquarie Island. One new species, Insulodrilus novaezelandiae, is described from New Zealand and three new species, Antarctodrilus spinosus, Nesodrilus isochaeta and Astacopsidrilus beckettae, are described from Campbell Island. Aspects of phreodrilid zoogeography and anatomy are discussed.

We provide keys, descriptions and illustrations for 16 species of Scoliidae Latreille, 1802 found in Hong Kong, of which nine are new records for the territory, one is new to China and one is new to science: Scolia pakshaoensis sp. nov. The status of one species (Megacampsomeris sp. 1) remains uncertain; it may represent an additional new species.

Two Australian species of Polynema Haliday (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), P. (Polynema) draperi Girault and P. (Polynema) editha Girault, are redescribed, as is the Australasian and Oriental P. (Dorypolynema) mendeli Girault; the previously unknown female of P. draperi and male of P. editha are also described. One new species group, the draperi group, is newly defined in P. (Polynema), in which eight new species are described: P. (Polynema) aristokratka sp. n. (New Zealand), P. (Polynema) baronessa sp. n. (New Zealand), P. (Polynema) grafinya sp. n. (New Zealand), P. (Polynema) imperatrix sp. n. (Australia), P. (Polynema) koroleva sp. n. (New Zealand), P. (Polynema) markiza sp. n. (New Zealand), P. (Polynema) princessa sp. n. (Australia), and P. (Polynema) rangatira sp. n. (New Zealand). Keys to the two treated subgenera of Polynema, both sexes of the world species of P. (Dorypolynema Hayat & Anis), and to females of the 10 described P. (Polynema) species in Australia and New Zealand are given. Taxonomic notes are provided for the Afrotropical species Polynema (Dorypolynema) mboroense (Risbec), comb. n. from Acmopolynema Ogloblin, whose previously unknown female is described, and for the Australian species Palaeoneura frater (Girault), comb. n. from Polynema.

This paper has been written in response to a request for determinations of certain parasites of wood-boring beetles in Queensland, Australia. The description of a new species of Monolexis entailed rather more research than was expected and has led to the expression of a few opinions of an exploratory nature on the status of the subfamily Hecabolinae. Altogether one new species in the Doryctinae and six (including one new genus) in the Hecabolinae are described.The types of all new species are in the British Museum.

Four new species of Psolus Oken from Australia are described: Psolus parantarcticus sp. nov. from Macquarie Island, Psolus salottii sp. nov. from South Australia and Macquarie Island, Psolus steuarti sp. nov. from Victoria, and Psolus springthorpei sp. nov. from Queensland. Megalota Diakonoff, previously known from the Indoaustralian Region (India, Sri Lanka, New Guinea, and Australia), Madagascar, and Africa, is reported from the Neotropics for the first time. Three previously described New World species (i.e., Megalota submicans (Walsingham), n. comb.; M. delphinosema (Walsingham), n. comb.; and M. plenana (Walker), n. comb.) were concealed within incorrect generic assignments or as “unplaced” species (i.e., lacking contemporary generic assignments). Twenty-one new species are described and illustrated: M. synchysis (TL: Venezuela), M. peruviana (Peru), M. aquilonaris (Mexico), M. vulgaris (Costa Rica), M. cacaulana (Brazil), M. macrosocia (Ecuador), M. ochreoapex (Costa Rica), M. spinulosa (Costa Rica), M. simpliciana (Costa Rica), M. jamaicana (Jamaica), M. ricana (Costa Rica), M. ceratovalva (Venezuela), M. bicolorana (Costa Rica), M. longisetana (Costa Rica), M. deceptana (Costa Rica), M. crassana (Costa Rica), M. gutierrezi (Costa Rica), M. chamelana (Mexico), M. beckeri (Brazil), M. flintana (Brazil), and M. pastranai (Argentina). Males of the genus are characterized by three distinctive features of the genitalia: the uncus consists of a pair of greatly expanded, flattened, variably round or square lobes, densely covered with spines and setae; the valvae are narrow with an elongate, apically spined process arising from the base of the costa; and the juxta is membranous with a narrowly sclerotized Uor J-shaped posterior edge. Five species have been reared from Croton spp. (Euphorbiaceae) in Costa Rica, and this is consistent with a single record of this host for an Australian species of Megalota.
