Application of Rock Physics and Seismic Inversion for the Determination of Reservoir Architecture and Connectivity for Coal Seam Gas Field Development

Currently, under the conditions of increasing depletion of hydrocarbon reserves in Russia, it is necessary to consider the resource potential of poorly-researched oil and gas objects as a factor for ensuring the sustainable development of the oil and gas complex, in the context of the concept formation of rational subsoil utilization and a circular economy. The methodology of this study is based on a clear sequence of geological and economic studies of poorly-researched oil and gas objects, including four stages, such as analysis of the raw material base, assessment of the raw material potential, determination of technological development parameters, and economic evaluation. The methods of the probabilistic estimation of oil resources of the forecasted objects with regard to geological risk are outlined. Software packages “EVA—Risk Analysis” and “EVA—Economic Evaluation of Oil and Gas Field Development Projects” were used for estimation. The result of the study is the determination of the geological and economic efficiency of the development of nine hydrocarbon objects with the determination of the order of their further geological exploration, and introduction into industrial development on the example of the poorly-researched region of the Timan-Pechora oil and gas province located in the Arctic zone.

In the process of high sulfur gas field development, the sulfur will separate out from the mixed gas when the pressure near wellbore area drops to a critical pressure of H2S. This will reduce the reservoir porosity greatly and decrease the gas well productivity as well. This paper discusses the characteristics of pressure transient testing plots when sulfur deposition occurs based on the redial composite reservoir model. And introduce an approach to determine the sulfur deposition radius near the wellbore with pressure transient testing interpretation in high sulfur gas reservoir. The method has been applied in some high sulfur gas field in eastern Sichuan Basin. The result shows that the method is simple and practical.

Time-lapse dedicated 3D seismic surveys were acquired across the Pyrenees oil and gas field, Exmouth Sub-basin to map production-induced changes in the reservoir. Rock-physics 4D modelling showed that changes in pore pressure and fluid saturation would produce a time-lapse seismic response of sufficient magnitude, in both amplitude and velocity, to overcome time-lapse noise. The dominant observed effect is associated with gas coming out of solution. The reservoir simulation model forecasted that reservoir depletion would cause gas breakout that would impact the elastic properties of the reservoir. The effect of gas breakout can be clearly observed on the 4D seismic data as a change in both amplitude and velocity. The analysis of the seismic datasets was proven to be enhanced significantly by using inversion methodologies. These included a band-limited extended-elastic impedance (EEI) approach, as well as simultaneous 4D elastic inversion. These datasets, combined with rock physics modelling, enabled quantitative interpretation of the change in 4D seismic response which was a key tool for assisting with the infill well placement and field development strategy.
