Wool fibre tenacity and its relationship to staple strength

Wool fibre tenacity and its relationship to staple strength was studied in a pen-feeding trial of 40 New Zealand Romney ewes. A method for estimating fibre tenacity is described based on normalizing fibre breaking load by cross-sectional area measured on fibre fracture-surfaces. The validity of this protocol was demonstrated by showing that (i) fibre diameter measured at the point of rupture was not significantly (P > 0.05) changed by breaking, and (ii) that the tenacity estimate was not significantly (P > 0.05) correlated with cross-sectional area variation along fibres, and (iii) showed lower fibre-to-fibre variation than other accepted measures of intrinsic material strength. The majority (83.5%) of the 1200 fibres broken in this study cleaved in smooth-planed fractures normal to the long axis of the fibre, the remaining fibres demonstrated axial-splitting following rupture. Tenacity did not differ significantly between the two break-types (P > 0.05). Tenacity demonstrated small negative correlations (P < 0.05) with fibre cross-sectional area and ellipticity. No change in tenacity (P > 0.05) occurred within fine, slow-growing 'wool-break' regions and tenacity did not vary significantly (P < 0.05) between body sites on sheep. Tenacity showed no significant variation (P > 0.05) with differential winter feeding, but significant variations (P < 0.01) of wool tenacity occurred between sheep. The sheepto-sheep differences in tenacity showed significant relationships with two indices of staple strength, work (P < 0.01) and peak-force (P < 0.01). Variability in fibre tenacity between sheep and its relationship to staple strength may provide some explanation of the origin of 'tender' and 'sound' wools.

1. The percentage of intramuscular fat (and its iodine number), of moisture (fat-free), and of total, myofibrillar, sarcoplasmic, stroma and non-protein nitrogens in lumbar 1. dorsi muscles, and their ultimate pH, fibre diameter, cross-sectional area and weight (both absolutely and as a percentage of the total musculature) were determined at bacon weight in two male and two female litter-mate pigs from each of four pure-bred sows mated with one boar of the same breed. Such data were obtained for pigs of Large White, Landrace and Welsh breeds.

The variations in fleece characters and the dependence of wool production per unit area of skin on these characters were studied with 15 sheep in both a medium and a strong-wool strain of Merino. Small but significant differences in staple length and fibre diameter were found between regions on the body, whereas differences in density were large. The variation in density was about three times as large as those in staple length and fibre diameter. Distinct dorsoventral and anteroposterior gradients over the body existed for fibre density, but not for staple length and fibre diameter. The influences of the fleece characters on wool production per unit area were somewhat different in the two strains, and changed with level of production. Among the medium-wool sheep, fibre density had the largest effect on production, with staple length less and mean fibre cross-sectional area least. Among the strong-wool sheep, length was more important than density, which in turn was more important than fibre cross-sectional area. The combined data indicated that as mean wool weight per unit area increased, the influence of density rose to a maximum and then diminished, whereupon mean fibre volume became the main contributor to wool weight. For different positions on the body of individual sheep, the dependence of wool production per unit area on the fleece characters was found to be similar in the two strains. Fibre density had the major effect in determining the level of production, whereas the influences of staple length and fibre area were negligible.

SummaryTwo populations of perennial ryegrass (PRG) (Lolium perenne L.) were selected for low (LS) and high leaf shear breaking load (HS) in 1984 at DSIR, Palmerston North. Leaf shear breaking load for the LS group was c. 41% lower than for the HS group and the LS selection had significantly shorter, narrower leaves and smaller leaf cross-sectional areas than the HS selection. LS leaves were c. 27% less resistant to shear than HS leaves per unit of cross-sectional area. The lower leaf shear strength in the LS selection was associated with a significantly lower concentration of sclerenchyma tissues in the leaf cross-sectional area compared with the HS selection. The total shear load required to break down the same dry weight of leaves to 1 mm particle size (leaf index of masticatory load) was calculated and shown to be influenced by the differences in leaf morphology. LS leaves were estimated to have a 21% lower index of masticatory load than HS leaves when both were grown under optimum climatic conditions.

An investigation has been made of errors associated with calculations of the sum of the cross-sectional areas of fibres in a staple of wool from the apparent cross-sectional area of the staple when compressed in a slot. The general mechanism of the compression process has been elaborated, and the errors associated with various conditions suggested. The staple size mainly considered was about that coming from one square inch of skin. The range of mean fibre diameter was from 16 to 32 microns.

Wool from lines of Romney sheep selected for improved or reduced staple tenacity was examined to determine if the difference in staple tenacity was explained by a difference in fibre tenacity. A random sample of ewe hogget wools (n = 32) was chosen from each of the 2 selection lines. Fibre tenacity was measured by breaking 10 fibres from each wool sample using an Instron to measure peak force, and then a fluorescence microscope attached to an image analyser to measure cross-sectional area of the fracture surface. Staple tenacity was measured on 5 staples per sample, by placing each staple in a Staplebreaker set to 40 mm between clamps, and the peak force to break the staple was recorded. Prior to clamping, each staple was adjusted so that the thinnest point measured 1.5 mm2 in cross-section and this point was positioned 20 mm from each clamp. Although the difference in staple tenacity between these 2 groups was highly significant (P = 0.002)) there was no difference in the tenacity of individual fibres (P = 0.903). Staple tenacity was not significantly correlated with fibre tenacity (r = 0.090). Similarly, there was no significant correlation between work to break the staple and either work (r = 0.118) or peak force (r = 0.195) to break the fibre. It is proposed that other components of staple tenacity, such as the profile of cross-sectional area along the fibre and the variability of crimped fibre length within the staple, may be more important determinants of staple tenacity in these selection lines.

SummaryDuring a triple pelvic osteotomy, rotation of the free acetabular segment causes the pubic remnant on the acetabulum to rotate into the pelvic canal. The resulting narrowing may cause complications by impingement on the organs within the pelvic canal. Triple pelvic osteotomies were performed on ten cadaver pelves with pubic remnants equal to 0, 25, and 50% of the hemi-pubic length and angles of acetabular rotation of 20, 30, and 40 degrees. All combinations of pubic remnant lengths and angles of acetabular rotation caused a significant reduction in pelvic canal-width and cross-sectional area, when compared to the inact pelvis. Zero, 25, and 50% pubic remnants result in 15, 35, and 50% reductions in pelvic canal width respectively. Overrotation of the acetabulum should be avoided and the pubic remnant on the acetabular segment should be minimized to reduce postoperative complications due to pelvic canal narrowing.When performing triple pelvic osteotomies, the length of the pubic remnant on the acetabular segment and the angle of acetabular rotation both significantly narrow the pelvic canal. To reduce post-operative complications, due to narrowing of the pelvic canal, overrotation of the acetabulum should be avoided and the length of the pubic remnant should be minimized.

The paper presents solutions to the direct and inverse problems on longitudinal vibrations of a rod with a variable cross-sectional area. The law of variation of the cross-sectional area is modeled as an exponential function of a polynomial of degree n . The method for reconstructing this function is based on representing the fundamental system of solutions of the direct problem in the form of a Maclaurin series in the variables x and λ. Examples of solutions for various section functions and various boundary conditions are given. It is shown that to recover n unknown coefficients of a polynomial, n eigenvalues are required, and the solution is dual. An unambiguous solution was obtained only for the case of elastic fixation at one of the rod’s ends. The numerical estimation of the method error was made using input data noise. It is shown that the error in finding the variable crosssectional area is less than 1% with the error in the eigenvalues of longitudinal vibrations not exceeding 0.0001.

The study analyzed the functional parameters of nasal breathing, linear parameters of the nasal aperture, nasal cavity and nasopharynx, volumetric parameters of the upper airways in patients with II and III skeletal class of jaw anomalies before and after orthognathic surgery. The respiratory function of the nose was assessed using a rhinomanometric complex. According to rhinoresistometry data, nasal resistance and hydraulic diameter were assessed. According to the data of acoustic rhinometry, the minimum cross-sectional area along the internal valve, the minimum cross-sectional area on the head of the inferior turbinate and nasal septum and related parameters were estimated. According to the CBCT data, the state of the nasal septum, the inferior turbinates, the nasal aperture, the state of the nasal cavity, and the linear values of the upper respiratory tract (nasopharynx) were analyzed.
