Buffer-feeding of grazing dairy cows, by allowing cows access to forage for a few hours each day, has been widely advocated as a means of maintaining high animal performance whilst enabling efficient sward utilization. However, in practice, responses to buffer-feeding with January/February calving cows have been extremely variable. The objective of this study was to examine if part of the variability in response could be explained by differences in the level of nutrition during the winter feed period.

Calculations based on conventional feeding standards suggest that cows grazing well-managed pasture are frequently consuming excessive quantities of protein in relation to their requirements and to the starch equivalent consumed. They also suggest that milk production from potentially high-yielding cows is limited primarily by the supply of dietary energy. This paper describes two experiments on the effects of low-protein supplements on the performance of grazing dairy cows and reports the main results on yield and composition of milk and herbage consumption. Full details and results, and some other aspects of the experiments, are being reported elsewhere.

Grazed grass is considered the cheapest feed available for dairy cows in temperate regions, and to maximise profits, dairy farmers must utilise this high-quality feed where possible. Recent research has reported that including white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in grass swards can have a positive effect on milk production. The aim of the present study was to quantify the effect of tetraploid and diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) swards sown with and without white clover on the milk production of grazing dairy cows. Four grazing treatments were used for the study; tetraploid-only PRG swards, diploid-only PRG swards, tetraploid PRG with white clover swards and diploid PRG with white clover swards. Thirty cows were assigned to each treatment and swards were rotationally grazed at a stocking rate of 2.75 cows/ha and a nitrogen-fertiliser application rate of 250 kg/ha annually. There was no significant effect of ploidy on milk production. Over the present 4-year study, cows grazing the PRG–white clover treatments had greater milk yields (+597 kg/cow.year) and milk-solid yield (+48 kg/cow.year) than cows grazing the PRG-only treatments. This significant increase in milk production suggests that the inclusion of white clover in grazing systems can be effectively used to increase milk production of grazing dairy cows.

Two experiments were undertaken to determine the effect of timing of protein supplementation on performance of grazing, lactating Holstein–Friesian cows fed maize silage and grain-based concentrate. In experiment 1, 36 cows were fed 0.8 kg DM/day of solvent-extracted cottonseed meal (CSM) either as 1 meal at 1200 hours with maize silage (CSM 1200) or at 1530 hours with concentrate (CSM 1530), or in 2 meals at 0600 and 1530 hours with concentrate (CSM 600 + 1530). In experiment 2, 36 cows were either fed no CSM (control) or fed 1.0 kg DM/day as either CSM 1200 or CSM 600 + 1530. In experiment 1, daily yields of 4% fat-corrected milk (FCM) and milk fat for CSM 600 + 1530 were significantly higher than for CSM 1530 with respective means of 22.8 v. 20.7 L and 895 v. 804 g. Daily yields of FCM and milk fat for CSM 1200 were intermediate (21.7 L and 841 g/cow, respectively). A similar trend for daily protein yield per cow was noted (712, 695 and 666 g for CSM 600 + 1530, 1200 and 1530, respectively). In experiment 2, milk yield differed numerically between CSM 600 + 1530 and other treatments, with means (± s.e.d.) of 24.7 ± 0.78, 22.9 ± 0.78 and 22.9 ± 0.78 L/cow.day for CSM 600 + 1530, CSM 1200 and control, respectively. Mean (± s.e.d.) net energy requirements for milk production and liveweight change tended to be lower for the control (68 ± 3.6 MJ/cow.day) as opposed to CSM 600 + 1530 (79 ± 3.6 MJ/cow.day) and CSM 1200 (76 ± 3.6 MJ/cow.day). Cumulative time where rumen degradable nitrogen:rumen degradable dry matter was less than 22 g/kg were 2, 2 and 3 h for CSM 600 + 1530, CSM 1200 and CSM 1530, respectively, in experiment 1, and 6, 4 and 2 h for the control, 1200 and CSM 600 + 1530, respectively, in experiment 2. No differences in rumen ammonia-N concentrations were noted between treatments in experiment 1. In experiment 2, a significantly lower mean (± s.e.d.) rumen ammonia-N concentration was recorded for the control at 1530 hours (62 ± 14.1 mg/dL) in comparison to CSM 600 + 1530 (114 ± 14.1 mg/dL) and CSM 1200 (119 ± 14.1 mg/dL). These experiments show that for grazing dairy cows supplemented with maize silage and grain-based concentrate, feeding a daily aliquot of CSM as 2 meals at 0600 and 1530 hours rather than 1 meal at 1200 or 1530 hours improves milk production.

Increasing the crude protein (CP) concentration of a ration fed to grazing dairy cows by adding canola meal can increase milk production. The present study investigated the effect of extra CP intake on nitrogen-use efficiency and the fate of the additional dietary nitrogen (N). Sixteen spring-calved rumen fistulated cows were housed in metabolism stalls for a 9-day period and offered one of the following four treatment diets: (1) 8 kg DM/cow.day of fresh perennial ryegrass (PRG) supplemented with 12 kg DM/cow.day of a partial mixed ration (PMR) comprising oaten hay, crushed maize and wheat grain (PMR 8); (2) 12 kg DM/cow.day of fresh-cut PRG and 12 kg DM/cow.day of PMR (PMR 12); (3) the same as for PMR 8 cows, except some wheat in the PMR was replaced with canola meal (PMR+C 8); and (4) the same as the PMR 12 cows, except some wheat in the PMR was replaced with canola meal (PMR+C 12). The PMR and the PMR+C diets were iso-energetic, but the canola meal provided extra CP. Crude protein intake was 14.4%, 14.8%, 16.8% and 17.4% DM for PMR 8, PMR 12, PMR+C 8 and PMR+C 12 respectively. The addition of canola meal increased DM intake (P < 0.05) from 20.4 to 21.6 kg/day and increased N intake (P < 0.001) from 478 to 590 g/day. Nitrogen digestibility increased (P < 0.05) from 67% to 71%, nitrogen-use efficiency decreased (P < 0.05) from 37% to 32% and urinary-N output increased (P < 0.01) from 118 to 160 g/day, indicating that the additional CP fed resulted in additional N surplus. Energy-corrected milk yield for the experimental period was 34 ± 3.1 kg/cow.day (mean ± s.d.); however, due to the low number of cows, the ability to rigorously assess the effects on milk production was limited.
