Developing processes which reduce enteric methane production without compromising animal productivity has become critical for sustainable livestock production. It was hypothesised that administrating cysteamine hydrochloride (CSH) to sheep would decrease methane yield (MY) and plasma concentration of somatostatin (SRIF) while increasing bodyweight gain (BWG) and daily wool growth. In the first experiment, 30 Merino × Dorset lambs were randomly divided into three groups receiving different dosages of CSH; 0 mg/kg BW, 80 mg/kg BW daily, or 80 mg/kg BW every third day; for a period of 35 days. The effect on BWG, feed conversion ratio (FCR), daily wool growth, voluntary feed intake (VFI), and MY (g CH4/kg DM intake) were studied. Treatment with CSH daily increased BWG (P < 0.05) and daily wool growth (P < 0.05), improved FCR (P = 0.01), and reduced MY (P < 0.01). Administering CSH every 3 days increased BWG (P < 0.05) and reduced MY (P < 0.01). There was no CSH effect on VFI. In the second experiment, CSH equivalent to 80 mg/kg BW was administered once to eight Merino × Dorset lambs. Blood samples were collected at –24, –16, 0, 2, 8, 24, and 48 h of administration. Plasma concentrations of SRIF were significantly reduced (P < 0.01) within 2 h of CSH ingestion and remained at reduced levels 48 h after administration. These results show that CSH rapidly reduces plasma SRIF concentration, which is likely to leading to an increase in animal production traits while reducing enteric MY. This experiment constitutes a novel and potentially significant investigation into the control of livestock greenhouse gas emissions while increasing livestock productivity.

One of the comestibles that have high nutritional value and are easy to obtain is chicken. The higher demand for chicken must be accompanied by an increase in production. It is important for the breeder of broiler chicken to choose high quality Day Old Chick (DOC) from the broiler breeder which also has high quality and productivity. The type of broiler breeder that is grown in PT. Karya Indah Pertiwi is Ross 308. Observations were made when the chickens were 18th to 21st weeks old in 6 henneries totaling about 10,000 chickens. The performance of broiler breeder observed were feed consumption, bodyweight gain, feed conversion ratio, and uniformity. Feed consumption of broiler breeder at 18th to 21st week was 659.4 g/chicken, 700,583 g/chicken, 742,116 g/chicken, 767.2 g/chicken. Bodyweight gain at 18th to 21st week was 143.51 g/chicken, 193.3 g/chicken, 63.43 g/chicken, 167.96 g/chicken. Feed conversion ratio at 18th to 21st week was 4.5, 3.6, 11.6, 4.5. The uniformity at 18th to 21st week was 77%, 81%, 81%, 81%. In conclusion, the value of feed consumption for broiler breeder at PT. Karya Indah Pertiwi was increasing every week. Bodyweight gain at 20th week was lower than 18th, 19th, and 21st week. The value of feed conversion ratio at 20th week was higher than at 18th, 19th, and 21st week. Chicken uniformity value at 18th week was not good it was at 77%, while at the 19th, 20th, and 21st week it was quite good at 81%.

Canola meal (CM) is a locally produced protein source that may be less expensive than soybean meal (SBM). This study evaluated the effects of replacing 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% SBM with CM in diets for slaughter ostriches. The CM was added at the expense of SBM and other concentrates, with minor changes in other ingredients. Birds (n = 15 per treatment) were reared from 77 to 337 days old on the trial diets, which were supplied ad libitum for starter, grower, and finisher phases. Bodyweights and feed intake were measured during these phases. No differences (P >0.05) were found between treatments for live weight at the end of each phase, dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) over all the growth phases. Although no differences were observed in live weight at the end of each phase, the birds reared on the diet with 50% CM were heaviest at slaughter, and birds reared with 100% CM were lightest (P <0.05). Differences (P <0.05) between diets were observed for the weight at slaughter, weights of the liver and thyroid glands and the pH of the cold carcass. However, no differences (P >0.05) were observed between diets for fat pad weight, dressing percentage, and weights of thighs and Muscularis gastrocnemius. The results indicate that CM could replace SBM in the diets of slaughter ostriches without affecting production traits and slaughter yields. Keywords: alternative protein, average daily gain, canola, dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio, growth, ostrich nutrition, production

Abstract. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of breed and a diet containing linseed on the growth and carcass composition characteristics of heifers. A total of 48 Limousin (LI) and Charolais (CH) heifers with an average weight of 270 kg were assigned to two diets containing either extruded linseed (LIN) or no supplemental oilseed (CON). The target slaughter weight was set at 500 kg. The diet had no effect on any of the observed production traits. The CH heifers had higher live weight gains (P<0.001) and a lower feed conversion ratio (P<0.001). The LI heifers had a higher dressing percentage (P<0.001), higher meat to bone ratio (P<0.001), greater m. longissimus lumborum et thoracis area (P<0.05), and produced more internal and carcass fat (P<0.05). It was concluded that purebred LI heifers grew less rapidly and less efficiently but produced heavier carcasses with a more favourable meat to bone ratio compared to purebred CH heifers.

The experiment was conducted on 12 female goats with average bodyweight of 13±1.28 kg, designed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replicates to evaluate replaceing Operculia turpethum levels on growth of Bach Thao goats. Four treatments had the following convolution rate: 0% (OT0, control), 25% (OT25), 35% (OT35) and 45% (OT45). Concentrate is 0.15; 0.2 and 0.25 kg dry matter/head/day. Crippling rates (25, 35 and 45%) were calculated on the basis of 5% body weight and feathered grass was fed ad bilitum. The results showed that the average bodyweight gain of goats in treatments OT0, OT25, OT35 and OT45 was 77; 104; 111; 91 g/head/day, in which OT35 treatment had the highest bodyweight gain . DM intake was significantly different in the treatments. Feed conversion ratio was the lowest at OT25 (7.89) and the highest at OT0 (9.38) but no significant difference. The OT35 treatment achieved the best bodyweight gain and economic efficiency in the brackish replacing levels in the Bach Thao diets

The study was conducted to determine the optimum dietary concentration of arginine relative to lysine on the basis of the performance, carcass traits and blood characteristics of 1–35-day-old broilers using a randomised complete block design. One-day-old broilers (n = 1200) were allocated to five dietary treatment groups receiving different arginine:lysine (Arg:Lys) ratios, where the proportion of Arg was progressively increased by increments of 10%, and the concentration of lysine was kept constant; the final ratios were 0.85, 0.95, 1.05, 1.16 and 1.26. Each diet treatment was composed of eight replicates (4 males and 4 females), with 30 chickens each replicate. All broilers were fed in three phases, namely starter, grower and finisher, at 1–10, 11–24 and 25–35 days of age respectively. An increase in the Arg:Lys ratio in the diet from 0.85 to 1.26 linearly (P < 0.001) increased bodyweight gain by 7% and improved feed conversion ratio by 6%. Feed intake and mortality were not significantly (P > 0.05) different among the treatments. Increasing the Arg:Lys ratio in the diet linearly (P < 0.0001) and quadratically (P < 0.05) improved the carcass yield and relative chilled carcass weight respectively. The percentages of breast meat and creatinine and insulin-like growth factor-1 concentrations also linearly (P < 0.0001) increased by 5.5%, 23.0% and 18.0% respectively, with an increasing dietary Arg:Lys ratio. The results of the present study indicated that the highest dietary Arg:Lys ratio (1.26) improved bodyweight gain, feed conversion ratio, breast meat, creatinine and insulin-like growth factor-1. However, the optimum dietary Arg:Lys ratio to improve carcass yield and weight gain in the grower phase (Days 11–24 of age) was at 1.05.

Replacements of maize with Alocasia macrorrhiza root meal (AMRM) with or without added coconut oil slurry (COS) in poultry diets were investigated in a series of two experiments. In Experiment 1, the replacement of maize with two levels (10% and 20%) each of AMRM and AMRM–COS on egg production and egg quality was investigated. Experiment 2 investigated the same treatments as in Experiment 1 on broiler performance. In both experiments, each diet was fed to four replicates of 10 birds in a completely randomised design. There was no marked effect on feed intake (FI) in both experiments (P > 0.05). In Experiment 1, percentage hen-day production and feed conversion ratio were depressed (P < 0.05) on 20% AMRM and egg weight on 10% AMRM, but these depressing effects were overcome by COS addition. Egg mass was significantly (P < 0.05) increased on 20% AMRM–COS compared with the other AMRM groups, but did not differ (P > 0.05) between the control and AMRM–COS. Haugh unit and percentage shell were not affected by the treatment (P > 0.05). In Experiment 2, bodyweight gain was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced with the inclusion of AMRM in the diet, with the lowest gain on 20% AMRM–COS. Feed conversion ratio was adversely affected when AMRM was included at a concentration greater than 10% of dietary maize (P < 0.05). Coconut oil-slurry treatment of the meal did not improve performance. It was concluded that inclusion of AMRM at a concentration greater than 10% dietary maize adversely affects the performance of both layers and broilers. Treatment of AMRM with COS at 9 : 1 overcomes these adverse effects in laying hens, but not in broilers. More research is warranted on the effects of higher concentrations of COS-treated AMRM in the diet on layers, and on processing methods that will improve performance of poultry.

AbstractDue to its function, the peroxisome proliferative activated receptor-γ, coactivator-1α (PPARGC1A) gene is a candidate in the search for genes that may affect production traits in the pig. The purpose of this study was to screen for new SNPs in exon 8 of the porcine PPARGC1A gene and to test their possible association with production traits. Altogether 736 pigs representing five breeds Polish Landrace, n=242; Polish Large White, n=192; Hampshire, n=27; Duroc, 21; Pietrain, n=12) and synthetic line 990 (n=242) were scanned via SSCP assay. Four SNPs were found; two new ones: C/G (His338Gln) and G/A Thr359Thr), and two previously reported ones: C/A (Arg369Arg) and T/A Cys430Ser). The missense T/A and C/G SNPs demonstrated pronounced interbreed variability in terms of allele frequencies, including the exclusive presence of the C/G substitution in the Hampshire breed. The tested SNPs occurred in five putative haplotypes, and their frequency also differed substantially between breeds. The association of the SNPs with production traits was tested for G/A (Thr359Thr), C/A (Arg369Arg) and T/A (Cys430Ser) substitutions in Polish Large White, Polish Landrace and line 990. The analysis revealed only breed-specific associations. The T/A (Cys430Ser) SNP was related to the feed conversion ratio in the Polish Large White (P=0.02), and the silent G/A and C/A substitutions were respectively associated with abdominal fat in line 990 and backfat thickness in Polish Landrace (P=0.04). The combined effects of the substitutions were estimated as haplotype effects. Three significant contrasts between haplotypes were calculated, but the observed associations were again only breed-specific.

The objective of the study is to compare the practical results with the predicted results by Crossbreeding Effects (CBE) software on pig crossbred based on daily gain, backfat thickness and feed conversion ratio. Another purpose of this study is to predict those three traits among some expected hybridization. This research was conducted on pig farm at Binh Thang Research and Development center from 2013 to 2017. In this study, for each pair of purebred Duroc and Pietrain, Duroc and Landrace, Pietrain and Landrace, twelve hybridizations were analyzed, nine unhybridizations were predicted by CBE software. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the predicted and actual data. With some unhybridization crossbred , the predictions showed high reliability (P<0.05). Based on the predicted data of CBE software , some traits of the crossbred animals would not be improved, therefore, it was not necessary to conduct these hybridizations
