Over the past four years the Australian Oil and Gas Exploration Industry has moved from a period of high exploration and development, skill shortages and overseas recruitment, through to a period of declining levels of exploration activity and expenditure, low world prices and significant retrenchments.A number of manpower and training aspects of industry development and decline over the period 1980 through to 1987 are discussed.The paper reviews and examines aspects of the Australian oil and gas work force and labour market. It brings into sharp focus a number of critical training and professional development issues facing the industry today. It proposes a review and rationalisation of academic programs for geoscientists and planning for future manpower requirements for the industry.

Hydrocarbon resources have become the most essential commodity contributing to any nation’s growth and development in the recent years. For the past decades now, the quest for hydrocarbon resources has been increasing in an arithmetic rate that its supply can no longer meets the demand for its consumption today. In petroleum industry, seismic and well log analyses play a vital role in oil and gas exploration and formation evaluation. This study is aimed to effectively characterize the reservoirs and analyze the by-passed pay in Philus Field, Niger-Delta, Nigeria in order to look into the economic viability and profitability of the volume of oil in the identified reservoir(s). The faults in the study area trend in NW-SE direction and dip towards the south. Seven reservoirs were mapped on Philus field. A discovery trap and a by-passed (new prospect) trap were mapped out on the field. The petrophysical analysis showed that porosity of Philus field was 0.24. The volumetric analysis showed that the Stock Tank Original Oil in Place of discovery trap (Philus field) ranged from 1.6 to 43.1 Mbbl while that of new prospect trap ranged from 18.1 to 211.3 Mbbl. It is recommended that the oil reserve of Philus field needs to be recalculated.

This paper examines the nature of the new forms of work and employment brought to the North East of England by the development of offshore construction activities, serving the North Sea's oil and gas industries in the period since the early 1970s. In particular, it assesses the extent to which these activities differ from traditional forms of work and employment organisation within the region. The results of this analysis suggest the need to interpret contemporary patterns of restructuring, both in a particular local labour market context and more generally, as part of an on-going evolutionary process, rather than as a decisive break (or shift) from the past.

Abstract Competing assumptions about whether entering the labour market via fixed-term jobs is a good or bad start into work life persist in the literature. Based on the longitudinal survey TREE, this article sheds light on (1) who enters the Swiss labour market via fixed-term jobs after graduating from initial vocational education and on (2) the consequences regarding their future returns. Results indicate that vocational education graduates entering the work force via fixed-term jobs of low occupational status must expect lower future wages.

Australia has emerged as a major international upstream player during the past few years. Record investment recently is set to transform Australia into one of the world’s leading gas exporters by the end of this decade. The significant unconventional oil and gas potential continues to attract major international energy companies to these shores, while exploration activity remains buoyant despite a reserves to production ratio (R/P) of more than 65 years. Australia has the resources and the skill set to remain at the forefront of the industry for years to come. Growing international competition, cost, regulatory, and productivity challenges, however, are beginning to blot the landscape for future investment of a similar scale. Drawing on the commercial challenges of operating in Australia, the author explores whether the returns of offer in Australia stack up against some of the opportunities elsewhere in the world, and what can be done to keep Australia’s resources industries competitive.

This has been a problem in the past, just as the converse has also. Communications barriers, however, are fading away, because at each level, educational, corporate divisional, and in operations, geologists are becoming better geophysicists and geophysicists are becoming better geologists. Their formerly discrete endeavors are becoming better coordinated and their work less separate. Geophysicists have been largely concerned with measurements of earth‐crust phenomena. Incorporation of more geology into such measurements has increased the reliability of the conclusions. As knowledge of the earth increases, the application of geology becomes less of an intuitive matter and thus more precise also. In this epoch in which oil and gas exploration proceeds to progressively greater depths, the distinction between a petroleum geologist and a petroleum geophysicist becomes more difficult to define. The time appears to be approaching when universities aiming graduates at the petroleum industry may graduate petroleum earth scientists, not geologists and geophysicists.

A new species of Tethya Lamarck, 1815 is described from a depth of 1000 m on the continental slope of the Great Australian Bight (GAB), southern Australia. The GAB slope was explored as part of systematic benthic surveys to understand unexplored communities in the light of current oil and gas exploration activity in the area. Tethya irisae sp. nov. was present at 1000 m in six of eight longitudinal depth surveys. Three molecular markers were obtained: COI, 28S (D3–D5) and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2. COI and 28S phylogenetic analyses show that the new species fits clearly within the genus Tethya. This is the 28th species of Tethya reported from Australia; it is unusual in that it has a stalk. The presence of a stalk as a morphological character to split genera in this family is questioned. The description of this new species is an opportunity to revisit the molecular phylogeny of the Tethyida Morrow & Cárdenas, 2015 using comprehensive datasets of COI and 28S markers. As in previous analyses, four Tethya clades were retrieved; we discuss the possibility of using external colour to support some of these clades. Despite unclear phylogenetic relationships amongst Tethyidae Gray, 1848 from Australia, our results suggest that tethyid genera Tethytimea Laubenfels, 1936, Tectitethya Sarà, 1994, Laxotethya Sarà & Sarà, 2002, Stellitethya Sarà, 1994, and Xenospongia Gray, 1858 derive from species of Tethya. We show that asters have been secondarily lost at least twice in the Hemiasterellidae Lendenfeld, 1889: in Liosina Thiele, 1899 and a potential new genus from northern Australia. We formally propose the reallocation of Liosina from Dictyonellidae van Soest, Diaz & Pomponi, 1990 to Hemiasterellidae Lendenfeld, 1889.

Many positive changes have been implemented in Serbia since the beginning of the transition period, and while these improve the position of women in the labour market the main indicators still show significant gender differences. Women are the majority of the unemployed and there are significant differences between regions and districts, in fields of work, experience, and the length of time taken to find work. An analysis of trends in the labour market over the past decade shows a worsening of the position of women, with a lower participation in economic activity and employment, rising unemployment rates, and an increase in the average time to find work and the proportion of women in traditionally female occupations. Problems of gender inequality demand more attention in order to improve existing legislation and the implementation of economic policies in the labour market which will ensure higher participation of women with lower education, with special emphasis on increasing the motivation of these women to undergo continuing education and training.

Exploration activity in Australia in 2013 occurred across a broad spectrum of conventional and unconventional plays. Competition for acreage was buoyant with large tracts of key onshore basins either licensed or under application. Offshore, there were new awards on the western Australian margin and in the Bight Basin off SA. Offshore 3D seismic acquisition was reduced from anomalously high levels in 2012. Onshore 2D seismic acquisition was at historic highs and onshore 3D was the most ever recorded. Overall drilling levels were maintained despite a decline offshore. Of 13 offshore wells drilled, six were discoveries. Sixty-nine exploration wells (excluding CSG wells) were drilled onshore. Fifty addressed conventional, and 19 were unconventional shale or basin-centered gas targets. Sixty of the 69 wells were drilled in the Cooper/Eromanga Basin where conventional oil and gas exploration yielded 11 oil and six gas discoveries. Drilling and fraccing campaigns in the Nappamerri Trough unconventional gas plays provided early encouraging results. 213 exploration and appraisal CSG wells were drilled in the CSG basins of Queensland and NSW. In Queensland a record total of 1,317 CSG wells were drilled in fiscal year 2012/2013. Shale gas exploration activity was increasingly focused on the Palaeozoic and Proterozoic Basins of Western, Central and Northern Australia with major oil and gas companies involved in joint ventures preparing for drilling in 2014. The results of these programmes will have an important bearing on the future direction of exploration in these plays.


Subject Senegal's oil and gas prospects. Significance Senegal is preparing to join the ranks of Africa's oil and gas producers, as exploration led by Cairn Energy and Kosmos Energy delivers positive results. Poor supply and high energy costs have historically been a barrier to Senegal's economic development. The oil and gas finds could radically transform the economy, although Kosmos' gas discovery is a long way offshore and will require cooperation with neighbouring Mauritania. While BP's involvement is a significant boost to the project, the past participation of the president's brother has raised transparency concerns. Impacts The emergence of Dakar as a regional port would prompt wider inward investment. The power sector will benefit from lower fuel costs, but not through an instant windfall. Senegal's neighbours stand to gain from increased oil and gas exploration investment and better energy supply.
