Australian exploration battled on through the challenging headwinds of 2020 and surprisingly, 2020 saw an increase in exploration drilling on 2019 activity. Twenty-five exploration wells were drilled in 2020 versus 20 exploration wells drilled in 2019. Eight discoveries were made during the year, with the most significant being the Enterprise discovery in the Otway Basin. 2020 also saw a return to exploration drilling in the Beetaloo Sub-basin unconventional plays. Appraisal drilling was dominated by Cooper-Eromanga Basin and coal seam gas activity. There were no offshore appraisal wells in 2020. The exploration farm-in deals of note were Santos taking additional equity from Armour in their South Nicholson Basin unconventional project and Origin taking additional equity from Falcon in their Beetaloo Sub-basin unconventional project. Origin also farmed into the Canning Basin position of Buru Energy and Rey Resources. Australia is set for an exciting year of exploration ahead with a return to exploration drilling in the Bedout Sub-basin, further exploration drilling in the North Perth Basin and a continuation of drilling and testing of the unconventional plays in the Beetaloo Sub-basin.

The Oobagooma Sub-basin of the Roebuck Basin includes the offshore extension of the onshore Fitzroy Trough of the Canning Basin. Together with the Leveque Platform, it covers an area of approximately 50,000 km2, yet only 14 exploration wells have been drilled in the area to date, five of which were drilled in the past 30 years. The sub-basin contains sediments ranging in age from Ordovician to Recent. This study examines the petroleum prospectivity of a region that is one of the least explored on Australia’s North West Shelf. Recent exploration drilling has revived interest in the area, with the 2014 Phoenix South–1 oil discovery in the offshore Bedout Sub-basin and the 2015 Ungani Far West–1 oil discovery in the onshore Fitzroy Trough. The two most significant source rock sequences relevant to the Oobagooma Sub-basin are the Carboniferous Laurel Formation and the Jurassic section. The former interval is part of a proven petroleum system onshore and is the source of the gas discovered at Yulleroo and oil at Ungani and Ungani Far West. A thick Jurassic trough to the north of the Oobagooma Sub-basin is believed to be the source of the oil and gas in Arquebus–1A and gas in Psepotus–1. Hydrocarbon charge modelling indicates significant expulsion occurred during both the Cretaceous and Tertiary from both source intervals. Trap timing is generally favourable given that inversion structures formed in several episodes during the Late Jurassic to Late Tertiary. The Early Triassic, now proven to be oil prone in the Phoenix South area (Molyneux et al, 2015), provides an additional (albeit less likely) source for the Oobagooma Sub-basin. These rocks are thin to absent within the Oobagooma Sub-basin, so long-distance migration would be required from deep troughs to the west.

Heilongjiang Jixi Basin is one of the important coal basins, and the CBM exploration is still in its infancy. This study shows that Jixi Basin is large in number of plies, thin in depth, poor continuity; the types of coal give priority to gas coal and coking coal, reaching the limits of angry thermo genic gas, coal seam gas with a large amount of gas supply is sufficient. In the southern basin, coal mainly developed in the range of 300~1200m, burial depth is moderate, and the dip is small, it is more favorable compared with the north.

This case study research examines informal adult learning in the Lock the Gate Alliance, a campaign against mining for coal seam gas in Central Gippsland, Australia. In the field of the campaign, circumstantial activists learn to think critically about the environment, they learn informally and incidentally, through socialization with experienced activists from and through nonformal workshops provided by the Environmental Nongovernment Organization Friends of the Earth. This article uses Bourdieu’s “theory of practice,” to explore the mobilization of activists within the Lock the Gate Alliance field and the practices which generate knowledge and facilitate adult learning. These practices have enabled a diverse movement to educate the public and citizenry about the serious threat fracking poses to the environment, to their land and water supply. The movements successful practices have won a landmark moratorium on fracking for coal seam gas in the State of Victoria.
