This paper compiles material from state and territory jurisdictions describing the location and resource potential of Australian onshore and coastal waters acreage to be made available for petroleum exploration in 2016. The Australian state and territory governments continue to support investment in the petroleum industry through the annual provision of land for exploration, which is promoted nationally and internationally. Technical assessments are provided with the release, which detail the potential for conventional and/or unconventional resources. The level of assessment will depend on exploration maturity, but may include a description of the geological setting, review of exploration history, summary of key results, and subsurface maps/sections. In addition to this, any updates on recent upstream developments and government initiatives, as well as present and future policy directions that relate to onshore petroleum exploration, may be described, particularly for jurisdictions that are not making land available this year. With global demand for gas—led by Asia—expected to grow at 2.6% annually between 2015 and 2025, investing in Australia’s petroleum and gas industry presents a significant opportunity to supply into this growing market.

Australian state and territory governments continue to support investment in the petroleum industry through the provision of acreage for exploration, which is promoted nationally and internationally. Updates are provided on recent upstream developments and government initiatives. Present and future policy directions that relate to onshore petroleum exploration are described, particularly for jurisdictions that are not making land available this year. When the APPEA conference was last held in Perth, in 2014, the oil price and exploration outlook were very different from today. In 2016, the petroleum industry experienced the full impact of the downturn, with the price for oil reaching a low of under $27 USD/barrel (WTI) early in the year. Several companies departed the onshore, exploration was at a fifteen-year low and much acreage has been surrendered across Australia. However, 2017 is showing signs of improvement with oil prices in the mid-50s and some hope that the industry will turn the corner this year. Low levels of exploration activity may have implications for future domestic gas supplies, and rising gas prices are of concern to local manufacturing industries and consumers throughout Australia. However, this may present marketing opportunities for successful explorers.

The growth in domestic and global demand for energy has encouraged the development of new and innovative sources of energy. In Australia, the coal seam gas (CSG) industry has been in the vanguard of these advances with significant investment already in place to develop major CSG projects in Queensland. This rapid rise has highlighted the potential for other unconventional resources with proponents now exploring for new resources, such as shale gas, across Australia. Governments have generally attempted to support the development of these new industries. Regulatory reform has addressed the bespoke regulatory issues presented by unconventional gas production particularly in respect of water, land access and co-existence with other industries. Despite this the onshore gas industry continues to face political uncertainty, community division and divergent regulatory responses. Industry has consistently called for regulatory reforms to address duplication, remove unnecessary costs and improve approval processes to speed project delivery and enhance project returns while maintaining robust environmental protection obligations. State and Federal governments have responded to these calls for action in varying ways. While there is much to approve of in each of these processes each presents specific issues and risks that must be considered before they are implemented or more broadly adopted. Therefore, the question arises: What is the best long-term regulatory approach for the sustainable development of Australia’s unconventional resources? This paper reviews existing Australian regulatory approaches and analyses how regulators, industry and the community can work together to develop and implement a regulatory framework that achieves their respective objectives.

Peter Green is the Geoscience Manager: Energy Geoscience in the Geological Survey Queensland and has extensive experience in basin studies, geoscience and the development of petroleum regulation in Queensland. This paper provides a summary of the land releases for petroleum exploration for onshore areas and coastal waters of Australia for 2010. The summaries include upstream petroleum acreage opportunities for the states and the Northern Territory, and geothermal energy exploration opportunities. The rise in interest in export liquefied natural gas projects has ensured petroleum exploration and production has remained strong. Interest in acquiring petroleum acreage to explore for both conventional and non-conventional plays remains high. Australian state and the Northern Territory governments continue to provide access to land and promotional opportunities for companies to undertake exploration and development of our petroleum resources. Acreage on offer provides a mix of exploration opportunities from conventional oil and gas through to the unconventional plays such as shale gas and tight gas. This change in acreage on offer reflects the changing nature of the onshore petroleum industry in Australia.

The seismic method has been thriving in the oil and gas industry for decades. Technological progress in acquisition, processing and interpretation have made it practically the only geophysical method used for petroleum exploration. Unfortunately, gravity, as a pioneering geophysical method appears to have been completely forgotten in Australia’s oil and gas industry. Most of the gravity data in Australia were collected in the 1960s and 1970s. Only government agencies and a few exploration companies have conducted gravity surveys in petroleum basins since that time. Australia’s mostly flat terrain, economical aspects of the gravity method such as low cost and the ability to cover vast underexplored onshore basins in the country, all seem to be positive factors indicating that this method should be commonly used as a part of petroleum exploration. Given the petroleum industry is currently trying hard to make exploration more economically effective, this may be an opportunity to revive the gravity method in petroleum exploration.

Exploration for oil and gas has soared to an all time maximum, and it will continue to increase. In eleven western states such exploration will be predominantly on our public lands. These lands are managed to (1) conserve and perpetuate natural resources, (2) give greatest good to the greatest number, and (3) have the benefits exceed the cost. The conservation program of the Bureau of Land Management is engaged in the construction of soil and moisture conservation projects, range improvements, and revegetation. At the present time the Bureau is actively engaged in controlling the poisonous invader Halogeton, employing herbicides and reseeding. Seismic methods, as often employed, may be destructive to soil and vegetation or surface resources and therefore opposed to other activities and interests. Direct losses occur through improperly bulldozed trails and the use of stockwater reservoirs. Shot holes left unplugged are dangerous. The oil and gas industry must develop conservation policies within its own ranks. Roads may be properly constructed and damage repaired. The petroleum industry must decide by its own actions its future place on our public domain.

The petroleum industry offers a broad spectrum of problems that falls within the domain of expertise of mechanical engineers. These problems range from the design of well production equipment to the evaluation of formation responses to production and stimulation. This paper briefly describes various aspects and related difficulties with which the oil industry has to deal, from the time the well is spudded until the field is abandoned. It attempts to delineate the problems, to outline the approaches presently used, and to discuss areas where additional research is needed. Areas of current research activity also are described; whenever appropriate, typical or pertinent case histories are used to illustrate a point.

Abstract Digital transformation is one of the most discussed themes across the globe. The disruptive potential arising from the joint deployment of IoT, robotics, AI and other advanced technologies is projected to be over $300 trillion over the next decade. With the advances and implementation of these technologies, they have become more widely-used in all aspects of oil and gas industry in several processes. Yet, as it is a relatively new area in petroleum industry with promising features, the industry overall is still trying to adapt to IR 4.0. This paper examines the value that Industry 4.0 brings to the oil and gas upstream industry. It delineates key Industry 4.0 solutions and analyzes their impact within this segment. A comprehensive literature review has been carried out to investigate the IR 4.0 concept's development from the beginning, the technologies it utilizes, types of technologies transferred from other industries with a longer history of use, robustness and applicability of these methods in oil and gas industry under current conditions and the incremental benefits they provide depending on the type of the field are addressed. Real field applications are illustrated with applications indifferent parts of the world with challenges, advantages and drawbacks discussed and summarized that lead to conclusions on the criteria of application of machine learning technologies.

The most utilized technique for exploring the Earth's subsurface for petroleum is reflection seismology. However, a sole focus on reflection seismology often misses opportunities to integrate other geophysical techniques such as gravity, magnetic, resistivity, and other seismicity techniques, which have tended to be used in isolation and by specialist teams. There is now growing appreciation that these technologies used in combination with reflection seismology can produce more accurate images of the subsurface. This book describes how these different field techniques can be used individually and in combination with each other and with seismic reflection data. World leading experts present chapters covering different techniques and describe when, where, and how to apply them to improve petroleum exploration and production. It also explores the use of such techniques in monitoring CO2 storage reservoirs. Including case studies throughout, it will be an invaluable resource for petroleum industry professionals, advanced students, and researchers.

A fiscal regime must reflect the underlying characteristics of the petroleum industry. Australia’s fiscal settings do not sufficiently reflect the current and future characteristics of the industry, particularly frontier deepwater exploration activity. The fiscal system can encourage greater exploration by providing more immediate access to tax benefits for exploration for all taxpayers, adjustment of the PRRT augmentation rules to better reflect time lags and improving development economics for high risk projects. Competing international regimes exhibit a greater flexibility of fiscal terms required to attract investment. Common petroleum industry arrangements, such as farm-ins should be free from any tax uncertainty. Tax legislation should be amended on a timely basis to correct technical anomalies or uncertainties.
