The composite effect, where the recognition of the upper half of a face is disrupted by a discrepant lower half relative to an isolated half-face, without a corresponding effect for vertical half-faces, provides a ready method of investigating configural information in face recognition. In previous studies purely photographic techniques have been used for composite construction. We investigated the effects of more face-like stimuli, constructed by morphing techniques. Subjects were trained to identify frontal Japanese faces, and tested on recognition on marked upper, lower, left, and right halves, both as half-faces and with distractors. While response accuracy for the upper and lower composites was lower than those for the relevant halves, there was no such effect for the right - left composites. A familiarity design was used in the second experiment to replicate this result. In the third experiment quarter-faces (top left - bottom right facial quadrants) were used to control for the information present. We found a strong composite effect for the right - left composites, and weaker ones for the top - bottom and quarter composites. In the fourth experiment we examined whether this effect was dependent on the presence of the quarter-composites by presenting them in a second block but found no effect of this manipulation. It thus appears that although there is a composite effect with faces composed in a shape-free manner, this effect is unstable. Under certain circumstances subjects may convert from a top - bottom relational processing strategy to a right - left strategy. The information used, even with a constant task, is dependent upon the variability of the images involved.

This study used the Pathfinder program to evaluate evacuation safety by assuming evacuation training in high school buildings and changing classroom layout. Analysis of the final evacuation requirements for Scenario 2, which currently has a concentration of classrooms on the third floor of the building, showed that Scenario 2 reduced 29.6 seconds to 173.9 seconds compared to Scenario 1's 203.5 seconds. However, the analysis of Scenario 3, in which 10 classrooms and personnel of three grades were placed equally on the left and right sides of the building, showed that the final evacuation requirements were reduced 3.9 seconds to 170.0 seconds compared to Scenario 2, but there was no significant difference. Scenario 3, which has more the efficiency of school year operation by placing classroom layout on the same floor by grade level than Scenario 2, in which more classrooms and students were placed downstairs. In each scenario, an analysis of the final evacuation requirements showed that the evacuation exit T1 on the left side of the building was 28 seconds or more shorter than T3 on the right side of the building. Therefore, it was analyzed that proper classroom layout and ramp facilities in high school buildings ensure evacuation safety

This chapter explores the way that political polarization in the 1920s and 1930s played out in both metropolitan France and in French Algeria. Extremisms of both the right and the left challenged the legitimacy of the Third Republic. This confrontation between left and right was complicated in French Algeria by the appearance of an active cohort of Muslim politicians running for office under the terms of the 1919 law. By the early 1930s this cohort was led by a dynamic politician from Constantine named Mohamed Bendjelloul, whose activities created tension within the local political establishment.

SummaryIn order to determine the relative frequencies of left and right leg venous thrombosis during pregnancy and the frequencies of venous thrombosis during the three trimesters, a cohort study of 60 consecutive patients with a first episode of venous thrombosis during pregnancy was performed. Fifty-eight women had isolated left leg thrombosis, two patients had bilateral venous thrombosis and no patient had isolated right leg venous thrombosis. Thirteen patients had venous thrombosis during the first trimester (21.7%), 28 during the second trimester (46.7%) and 19 during the third trimester (31.7%). These findings indicate that patients with symptoms in the right leg rarely have venous thrombosis. Because leg pain and swelling occur most frequently during the third trimester but venous thrombosis is relatively equally distributed during all three trimesters, patients presenting earlier during pregnancy are more likely to have venous thrombosis than patients presenting later during pregnancy.

Three experiments are reported in which blindfolded right-handed adults felt numerical stimuli with the middle fingers of their left or right hands. These stimuli consisted of collections of raised dots in random arrangement to be enumerated (Experiment I), collections of evenly spaced raised dots in a straight line to be enumerated (Experiment II), and raised digits to be identified (Experiment III). Differences between hands were only found in Experiment I. The left hand was faster, apparently reflecting specialisation of the right cerebral hemisphere for the analysis of complex spatial stimuli. A fourth experiment, in which collections of raised dots in random arrangement to be enumerated were felt through a piece of cloth by subjects who were not blindfolded, confirmed the left hand superiority and demonstrated that it had not arisen from loss of sight of the movements of the dominant hand.

Abstract The heterochromatin of the third chromosome is the largest uncharacterized region of the Drosophila melanogaster genome, and the last major block of D. melanogaster heterochromatin to be thoroughly analyzed. In the present study, this region was genetically dissected by generating and analyzing a series of attached, detached and reattached third chromosomes. Separate detachment experiments were conducted for all 12 possible combinations of four newly synthesized sister-strand compound-3L and three newly synthesized sister-strand compound-3R chromosomes. A total of 443 recessive lethal detachment products carrying putative heterochromatic deficiencies were tested for complementation in a several-stage complementation analysis. The results revealed the presence of seven separable vital regions in the heterochromatin of chromosome 3. Attempts to reattach deficiency-carrying detachment products established that six of these vital regions are on the left arm, but only one is on the right arm. An analysis of the types and frequencies of detachment-product deficiencies generated in each detachment experiment permitted the genetic characterization of the progenitor compounds. It was also possible to determine the proximal-distal orientation of the genes on each arm, and to identify possible breakpoints for each lethal detachment product produced. The results of this study suggest that vital genes in the heterochromatin of the third chromosome are not randomly distributed between, nor within, the heterochromatic blocks of the left and right arms.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Statistical analysis of patients previously operated on may improve our methods of performing subsequent surgical procedures. In this article, we introduce a method for studying the functional properties of cerebral structures from electrophysiological and neuroimaging data by using the probabilistic functional atlas (PFA). The PFA provides a spatial distribution of the clinically most effective contacts normalized to a common space. This distribution is converted into a probability function for a given point in space to be inside an effective contact. The PFA was used to analyze spatial properties of the functional subthalamic nucleus (STN), defined as the spatial volume corresponding to the distribution of effective contacts. These results may potentially be useful in planning subthalamic implantation of electrodes. METHODS: In all, 168 bilateral subthalamic stimulations were examined. An algorithm was developed for converting these data into the PFA. The PFA for the STN (here called “atlas”) was calculated with 0.25-mm3 resolution, and several features characterizing the left and right STN were studied. The analysis was performed with and without lateral compensation against the width of the third ventricle. The key feature introduced here used for analysis of the functional STN is a (probabilistic) functional volume of structure (defined for a given probability as the volume of a region whose every point has a probability equal to or greater than this given probability). RESULTS: The analysis has been performed for two situations: with and without lateral compensation against the width of the third ventricle. Without lateral compensation, the differences between the mean values and standard deviations of their barycenter coordinates for the left and right functional STNs are 0.31 and 0.18 mm, respectively. The left STN and right STN exhibit differences in functional volume size and probability distribution. The entire functional volume is 240 mm3 for the left and 229 mm3 for the right STN. A more prominent difference exists in the region of high probabilities (0.7 or higher), called “hot STN.” The volume of the left hot STN is 5.52 mm3, whereas that of the right is 3.92 mm3. The left hot STN is 1.41 times bigger and 20% more dense than the right hot STN. For a given probability, the corresponding functional volume for the left hot STN is up to 43 times larger than that for the right STN. Practically speaking, lateral compensation does not change these results qualitatively. Quantitatively, differentiation between the left and right STNs is lower. For instance, for a given probability, the corresponding functional volume for the left hot STN is only up to 11 times larger than that for the right one. In either situation (i.e., with and without lateral compensation), the size of the hot STN in relation to the whole STN remains very small (1–2%). In addition, statistical analysis shows that in either situation, the means of the left and right functional STNs are significantly different. CONCLUSION: PFA-based planning may be superior to the current practice of using anatomic atlases that provide delineation of the target structure only, because it is more precise and provides a unique target point in the stereotactic space. This best stereotactic target is the point in the individualized atlas with the highest probability, meaning the highest probability of having the best target on the basis of the patients previously operated on. This best target is located in the hot STN, the size of which determines the precision of targeting. Because the size of the hot STN in comparison to the whole STN remains very small (1–2%) independent of whether or not lateral compensation is applied, target planning and execution have to be performed with high precision. The methodology presented, based on the PFA and on the functional volume, is general and can be applied to other structures and data sets. As numerous centers keep gathering large amounts of electrophysiological human and animal data, this work may facilitate opening new avenues in exploiting these data.

A 55-year-old woman was referred because of diffuse pruritic erythematous lesions and an ischemic process of the third finger of her right hand. She was known to have anaemia secondary to hypermenorrhea. She presented six months before admission with a cutaneous infiltration on the left cubital cavity after a paravenous leakage of intravenous iron substitution. She then reported a progressive pruritic erythematous swelling of her left arm and lower extremities and trunk. Skin biopsy of a lesion on the right leg revealed a fibrillar, small-vessel vasculitis containing many eosinophils. Two months later she reported Raynaud symptoms in both hands, with a persistent violaceous coloration of the skin and cold sensation of her third digit of the right hand. A round 1.5 cm well-delimited swelling on the medial site of the left elbow was noted. The third digit of her right hand was cold and of violet colour. Eosinophilia (19 % of total leucocytes) was present. Doppler-duplex arterial examination of the upper extremities showed an occlusion of the cubital artery down to the palmar arcade on the right arm. Selective angiography of the right subclavian and brachial arteries showed diffuse alteration of the blood flow in the cubital artery and hand, with fine collateral circulation in the carpal region. Neither secondary causes of hypereosinophilia nor a myeloproliferative process was found. Considering the skin biopsy results and having excluded other causes of eosinophilia, we assumed the diagnosis of an eosinophilic vasculitis. Treatment with tacrolimus and high dose steroids was started, the latter tapered within 12 months and then stopped, but a dramatic flare-up of the vasculitis with Raynaud phenomenon occurred. A new immunosupressive approach with steroids and methotrexate was then introduced. This case of aggressive eosinophilic vasculitis is difficult to classify into the usual forms of vasculitis and constitutes a therapeutic challenge given the resistance to current immunosuppressive regimens.

Configural processing has been considered the major contributor to the face inversion effect (FIE) in face recognition. However, most researchers have only obtained the FIE with one specific ratio of configural alteration. It remains unclear whether the ratio of configural alteration itself can mediate the occurrence of the FIE. We aimed to clarify this issue by manipulating the configural information parametrically using six different ratios, ranging from 4% to 24%. Participants were asked to judge whether a pair of faces were entirely identical or different. The paired faces that were to be compared were presented either simultaneously (Experiment 1) or sequentially (Experiment 2). Both experiments revealed that the FIE was observed only when the ratio of configural alteration was in the intermediate range. These results indicate that even though the FIE has been frequently adopted as an index to examine the underlying mechanism of face processing, the emergence of the FIE is not robust with any configural alteration but dependent on the ratio of configural alteration.

Choice of profession is a social phenomenon that every person has to face in life. Numerous studies convince us that not only the well-being of a person depends on the chosen work, but also his attitude to himself and life in general, therefore, the right and timely professional choice is very important. Research about factors of career self-determination of students of higher education institutions in Ukraine shows that self-determination is an important factor in the socialization of young person, and the factors that determine students' career choices become an actual problem of nowadays. The present study involved full-time and part-time students of Institute of Philology and Mass Communications of Open International University of Human Development "Ukraine" in order to examine the factors of career self-determination of students of higher education institutions (N=189). Diagnostic factors of career self-determination of students studying in the third and fourth year were carried out using the author's questionnaire. Processing of obtained data was carried out using the Excel 2010 program; factorial and comparative analysis were applied. Results of the study showed that initial stage of career self-determination falls down on the third and fourth studying year at the university, when an image of future career and career orientations begin to form. At the same time, the content of career self-determination in this period is contradictory and uncertain, therefore, the implementation of pedagogical support of this process among students is effective.

ABSTRACT Parental perception will affect the fulfillment of children’s participation rights. Fullfilment of children’s participation rights will be fulfilled optimally if parents pay anttention to opinions while providing opportunities for children to make and make decisions about the child’s goals and self-interest. The subjects studied consisted of 5 subjects consisting of father and mother who had children aged 9- 12 years. This study uses qualitative research methods, with data retrieval tools in teh form of interviews, observation and documentation. From the research found data were the subjects do not fulfill the right of participation of children up to the maximum ladder where children’s participation rights range from the first ladder to the third ladder. The first ladder to the third ladder is actually a non- participating ladder. This means that children is manipulated, dominated by parents, there is direct communation and the severity of the parent. The children felt disappointed, sad, and angry with the parents but they still tried to hear and obey the parent’s decision. Children from third and fourth subjects experienced excessive fear to speak to their parent (father). Suggestions for parents to be more caring and fulfill the rights of children’s participation so as not to affect the growth and development of children. Keywords: participation rights, children, parents
