The Effects of Vertical Gradient of Disparity and Combination Mode of Features on the Occurrence of Double Fusion in Panum's Limiting Case

Panum's limiting case generally refers to the phenomenon that two features presented to one eye and a single feature presented to the other are combined and then perceived as two features at different depths. It is still not clear why experimental results derived from the Panum-type configuration (all lines parallel) support a double fusion viewpoint, but they do not for the Wheatstone-type configuration (one line not parallel to the others). Some experimental results support the double fusion theory, while others do not, even under a small disparity. Here we report that, under a small disparity, when the vertical gradients of the horizontal disparity of dichoptic feature pairs in previous Wheatstone-type configurations were increased or decreased, the evidence which was considered to be very convincing in previous studies, either supporting or against the double fusion viewpoint, was challenged, and even turned to support the opposite view. Moreover, it was discovered that changes in the way features were arranged altered the results. Together, these results indicate that double fusion is the common basis for all kinds of Panum-type configurations. But for the Wheatstone-type configurations double fusion is also constrained by the vertical gradient of disparity of the configurations in addition to disparity and influenced by the degree of similarity/conflict between binocular cues and monocular cues resulting from different arrangements of features.

Underground spaces in town centres present a big attraction for investors. However, they put special requirements to the internal environment. Those requirements can be fulfilled by means of daylighting. Examples of lighting of underground spaces are discussed. It is shown that the common systems of natural lighting are not always possible to use and cause big heat losses. Hollow light guide pipes allow avoid the shortcomings of common daylight systems. Method of calculation of daylight factors from hollow light guide pipes is shown. The results of calculation of daylight factors under the light guide pipes of different diameters in the different depths are presented.

Summary Despite the common basis of cognitive theory for cognitive counseling and social competence development, no research has charted the effectiveness of the counseling in raising social competence in young female residents of the residential service. To examine the effectiveness, this study analyzed data gleaned from monthly surveys of young female residents and their social workers regarding the latter’s daily life cognitive counseling. The data consisted of 391 cases pairing the female residents and social workers in Hong Kong over 33 months. Findings The cases afforded a cross-lagged analysis showing the raising of the girl’s social competence by the worker’s cognitive counseling earlier in the previous month. In substantiating this raising, the analysis also indicated that earlier social competence did not affect the counseling. Applications The findings imply the worth of promoting the social worker’s daily life cognitive counseling to advance girl residents’ social competence. Such counseling is particularly helpful to girls with lower education, who are lower in social competence.

AbstractCurrent attempts to understand human-machine systems are complex and unwieldy. Multiple disciplines throw different concepts and constructs at the problem, but there is no agreed-to framework to assemble these interrelated moving parts into a coherent system. We propose interdependence as the common factor that unifies and explains these moving parts and undergirds the different terms people use to talk about them. In this chapter, we will describe a sound and practical theoretical framework based on interdependence that enables researchers to predict and explain experimental results in terms of interlocking relationships among well-defined operational principles. Our exposition is not intended to be exhaustive, but instead aims to describe the basic principles in a way that allows the gist to be grasped by a broad cross-disciplinary audience through simple illustrations.

This paper proposes a novel elastomer-based tunable liquid-filled microlens by using an Electro-Conjugate Fluid (ECF) jet and MEMS technology. The common approach for tuning an elastomer-based microlens is to change the geometry of the boundary determined by the control pressure of the chamber by using an external pump. However, this paper proposes placing the ECF micropump inside the tunable microlens. The ECF is a dielectric fluid that works as a smart fluid, generating a powerful jet flow (ECF jet) when subjected to a high DC voltage. Since the ECF jet is generated only with a pair of tiny electrodes, the pumping mechanism can be easily inside the device. We fabricated the large model prototype of an ECF focus-tunable microlens by partially utilizing MEMS technology. The experimental results showed us the feasibility of the ECF microlens.

Part I of this book sets out a semiotic theory of human culture. This chapter uses the semiotics of John Poinsot (1589–1644, also known as John of St Thomas) to show how the whole scope of human cultural activity can be understood as at root the work of signs. Poinsot has a very wide-ranging understanding of signification, which includes natural, customary, and stipulated signs; physical and formal/psychological signs; and perceptual and communicative signs. Crucially, a single metaphysics of relations is the common basis for this whole spectrum of signs, so that natural and cultural signs count univocally as instances of signification. Poinsot’s notion of semiotic custom, in which conventional signs are ‘naturalised’ through habit to act as natural signs, is an important theme (to which chapters 5 and 6 will return in an evolutionary context). Poinsot’s semiotics illuminates the full anthropological ‘breadth’ of culture.

In the present study, a conventional plenum window was incorporated with perforated thin box in order to enhance its performance at frequency range which centralized at 1000 Hz as most of the common noise sources at city nowadays are centralizing around this frequency. The entire studies were conducted in a reverberation room. The effectiveness of jagged flap on mitigating diffracted sound was also studied. Three types of noises were examined in the current study—white noise, traffic noise and construction noises. The experimental results showed that the plenum window with perforated thin box could reduce 8.4 dBA, 8.7 dBA and 6.9 dBA of white, traffic and construction noises, respectively. The jagged flaps did not have significant effect on the plenum window’s noise mitigation performance. When frequencies were ranging from 800 Hz to 1250 Hz, when compared with the case of without perforated thin box, it was found that the perforated thin box had good acoustic performance where it was able to reduce additional 1.6 dBA, 1.6 dBA and 1.2 dBA of white, construction and traffic noises, respectively.

The most important problem of the Velcro Manufacturer face is to control the surface quality, and how to improve the product quality has become the key of the enterprise. Therefore, this paper take the research on the examination method of the Velcro’s surface flaw, and propose a simply and effectively detection method on the marginal check and the flaw extraction of the buckle in the considering of the system’s real-team and the effectiveness. The experiments have been carried on the results been analyzed under the Visual c + + develop environment. Experimental results show that the system can detect the common defect of the fastening surface accurately and classify them.

In this paper, we present a robust multibit image watermarking scheme to undertake the common image-processing attacks as well as affine distortions. This scheme combines contrast modulation and effective synchronization for large payload and high robustness. We analyze the robustness, payload, and the lower bound of fidelity. Regarding watermark resynchronization under affine distortions, we develop a self-referencing rectification method to detect the distortion parameters for reconstruction by the center of mass in affine covariant regions. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed scheme are confirmed by experimental results, which show the superior performance as comparing against several state-of-the-art watermarking methods.
