The Concave Cusp as a Determiner of Figure—Ground

The tendency to interpret as figure, relative to background, those regions that are lighter, smaller, and, especially, more convex is well known. Wherever convex opaque objects abut or partially occlude one another in an image, the points of contact between the silhouettes form concave cusps, each indicating the local assignment of figure versus ground across the contour segments. It is proposed that this local geometric feature is a preattentive determiner of figure—ground perception and that it contributes to the previously observed tendency for convexity preference. Evidence is presented that figure—ground assignment can be determined solely on the basis of the concave cusp feature, and that the salience of the cusp derives from local geometry and not from adjacent contour convexity.

Abstract. Functional classification of the road is important to the construction of sustainable transport systems and proper design of facilities. Mobile laser scanning (MLS) point clouds provide accurate and dense 3D measurements of road scenes, while their massive data volume and lack of structure also bring difficulties in processing. 3D point cloud understanding through deep neural networks achieves breakthroughs since PointNet and arouses wide attention in recent years. In this paper, we study the automatic road type classification of MLS point clouds by employing a point-wise neural network, RandLA-Net, which is designed for consuming large-scale point clouds. An effective local feature aggregation (LFA) module in RandLA-Net preserves the local geometry in point clouds by formulating an enhanced geometric feature vector and learning different point weights in a local neighborhood. Based on this method, we also investigate possible feature combinations to calculate neighboring weights. We train on a colorized point cloud from the city of Hannover, Germany, and classify road points into 7 classes that reveal detailed functions, i.e., sidewalk, cycling path, rail track, parking area, motorway, green area, and island without traffic. Also, three feature combinations inside the LFA module are examined, including the geometric feature vector only, the geometric feature vector combined with additional features (e.g., color), and the geometric feature vector combined with local differences of additional features. We achieve the best overall accuracy (86.23%) and mean IoU (69.41%) by adopting the second and third combinations respectively, with additional features including Red, Green, Blue, and intensity. The evaluation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, but we also observe that different road types benefit the most from different feature settings.


The field equations in the neighbourhood of a particle for a spherically symmetric metric in the conformal theory of gravitation put forward by Hoyle & Narlikar are examined. As the theory is conformally invariant, one can use different but physically equivalent conformal frames to study the equations. Previously these equations were studied in a conformal frame which, though suitable far away from the isolated particle, turns out not to be suitable in the neighbourhood of the particle. In the present paper a solution in a conformal frame is obtained that is suitable for considering regions near the particle. The solution thus obtained differs from the previous one in several respects. For example, it has no coordinate singularity for any non-zero value of the radial variable, unlike the previous solution or the Schwarzschild solution. It is also shown with the use of this solution that in this theory distant matter has an effect on local geometry.

AbstractThree-dimensional geological and groundwater flow models of a submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) site at Hanko (Finland), in the northern Baltic Sea, have been developed to provide a geological framework and a tool for the estimation of SGD rates into the coastal sea. The dataset used consists of gravimetric, ground-penetrating radar and shallow seismic surveys, drill logs, groundwater level monitoring data, field observations, and a LiDAR digital elevation model. The geological model is constrained by the local geometry of late Pleistocene and Holocene deposits, including till, glacial coarse-grained and fine-grained sediments, post-glacial mud, and coarse-grained littoral and aeolian deposits. The coarse-grained aquifer sediments form a shallow shore platform that extends approximately 100–250 m offshore, where the unit slopes steeply seawards and becomes covered by glacial and post-glacial muds. Groundwater flow preferentially takes place in channel-fill outwash coarse-grained sediments and sand and gravel interbeds that provide conduits of higher hydraulic conductivity, and have led to the formation of pockmarks on the seafloor in areas of thin or absent mud cover. The groundwater flow model estimated the average SGD rate per square meter of the seafloor at 0.22 cm day−1 in autumn 2017. The average SGD rate increased to 0.28 cm day−1 as a response to an approximately 30% increase in recharge in spring 2020. Sensitivity analysis shows that recharge has a larger influence on SGD rate compared with aquifer hydraulic conductivity and the seafloor conductance. An increase in recharge in this region will cause more SGD into the Baltic Sea.

A superplastic Zn-Al alloy in sheet form is formed into a bulge over a circular hole by pneumatic pressure. The geometry, the stress, the strain, and the strain-rate are determined at various points covering the whole specimen and at various stages of the forming process. The complicated shape, and its complicated changes, are represented by introducing an index for the local geometry, called “prolateness,” which is also related to the local stress ratio in a simple way. The biaxial stress is analyzed into a strain-proportional and a strain-rate-proportional component, which represent, respectively, the quasi-solid and the quasi-liquid behavior of the superplastic material.

This paper put forward a geometry feature recognition method of part drawing based on graph matching. Describe the constraints structure of geometric feature in geometric elements and those constraint relationships. Match sub-graph in contour closure graphics and those combination. Using linear symbol notation of chemical compounds in chemical database for reference, encode to constraint structure of geometry graphics, establish recognition mechanism of geometric characteristics by structure codes. Taking the fine-tune screw and fork parts for example, this method has been proved to be effective.
