The effect of familiar size as a distance cue was tested with familiar objects at familiar distances. Experiment 1 showed that there were no uncontrolled distance cues available and that in their absence the retinal image did not affect depth or size perception. Under these conditions, size and distance judgments were essentially indeterminate and independent of each other. In experiment 2 a paradigm was employed which allowed a direct determination of whether equivalent changes either in size of a familiar object or in its true distance produced equivalent changes in its perceived distance. The results showed that there were no uncontrolled distance cues, and that subjects perceived the familiar object as having its familiar size. Moreover, changing the retinal image of the objects had almost exactly the same effect on their perceived distance as did changing their true distance. Hence, familiar size does effectively govern the perception of distance when there are no competing cues.

Increasing (or decreasing) the convergence angle can shrink (or expand) the perceived size of an object without changing its retinal size (Oyama, 1974 Perception & Psychophysics16 175 – 182). Here we address the question whether such a change in perceived size affects visual acuity. We investigated the effects of perceived size on the legibility of letters, using a telestereoscope consisting of four mirrors to control the observer's convergence angle while keeping the size of the retinal image constant. The targets were photocopies of ordinary Japanese books containing both types of Japanese characters, kana and kanji. The former is a phonetic character and simpler than the latter. Letters were printed in black on white paper. First, we demonstrated that letters do become more legible (illegible) as perceived size expands (shrinks), although their retinal size does not change. Then, we measured the size of the convergence angle at which letters became legible. The ‘threshold’ size of the convergence angle was obtained for several retinal sizes (0.1 to 0.2 deg) of letters, and for kana and kanji, respectively. Four subjects participated in the experiment. The result shows that the threshold convergence angle for legibility decreases as the retinal size of letters decreases, so that the minimum retinal size of legible letters depends linearly on the convergence angle. The results implicate contributions from higher levels of the visual system to the determination of visual acuity.

AbstractWe propose a two-lattice method for direct determination of the recoilless fraction using a single room-temperature transmission Mössbauer measurement. The method is first demonstrated for the case of iron and metallic glass two-foil system and is next generalized for the case of physical mixtures of two powders. We further apply this method to determine the recoilless fraction of hematite and magnetite particles. Finally, we provide direct measurement of the recoilless fraction in nanohematite and nanomagnetite with an average particle size of 19 nm.

The polarographic behaviour was studied for 6-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-7-hydroxycoumarin, a natural compound serving as an optical whitening agent. The substance can be quantitated by tast polarography, differential pulse polarography using a conventional dropping mercury electrode, and differential pulse polarography using a static mercury drop electrode over the regions of 20-1 000, 2-1 000, and 0.2-1 000 μmol l-1, respectively. The methods developed for the quantitation of the compound were applied to its direct determination in a raw product.
