Using experimental methods of analysis, the morphology, elemental composition and chemical state of hard alloys of the «TiC-TiNi» system in the initial state and after various types of ion-beam treatment have been investigated. It is found that the effect of a continuous ion beam leads to an increase in the microhardness of the investigated alloys by 10–12 %. When samples are irradiated with a pulsed ion beam, as a result of destruction of surface layers, the microhardness value decreases by 20 %, as a result of which this type of modification is not preferable for alloys of the TiC-TiNi system

The effects of energetic treatments, crosslinking, and plasma modification on the surface mechanical properties and deformation behavior of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were examined in light of nanoindentation experiments performed with a surface force microscope. Samples of UHMWPE were subjected to relatively high-dose gamma irradiation, oxygen ion implantation, and argon ion beam treatment. A range of crosslinking was achieved by varying the radiation dose. In addition, low-temperature plasma treatment with hexamethyldisiloxane/O2 and C3F6 was investigated for comparison. The surface mechanical properties of the treated UHMWPE samples are compared with those of untreated UHMWPE samples used as controls. Surface adhesion measurements obtained from the nanoindentation material responses are also discussed in terms of important treatment parameters. Results demonstrate that high-dose oxygen ion implantation, argon ion beam treatment, and low-temperature C3F6 plasma modification are effective treatments for enhancing the surface mechanical properties of UHMWPE.

The interfacial structure between the organic and inorganic phases in biological hard tissues plays an important role in controlling the growth and the mechanical properties of these materials. The objective of this work was to investigate these interfaces in nacre by transmission electron microscopy. The nacreous section of several different seashells -- abalone, pearl oyster, and nautilus -- were studied. Nacre is a laminated composite material consisting of CaCO3 platelets (constituting > 90 vol.% of the overall composite) separated by a thin organic matrix. Nacre is of interest to biomimetics because of its highly ordered structure and a good combination of mechanical properties. In this study, electron transparent thin sections were prepared by a low-temperature ion-beam milling procedure and by ultramicrotomy. To reveal structures in the organic layers as well as in the interfacial region, samples were further subjected to chemical fixation and labeling, or chemical etching. All experiments were performed with a Philips 430T TEM/STEM at 300 keV with a liquid Nitrogen sample holder.

Abstract The sample preparation for transmission electron microscope can be done using a method known as "lift-out". This paper demonstrates a method of using a silver-gallium nanoneedle array for a quicker sharpening process of tungsten probes with better sample viewing, covering the fabrication steps and performance of needle-tipped probes for lift-out process. First, an array of high aspect ratio silver-gallium nanoneedles was fabricated and coated to improve their conductivity and strength. Then, the nanoneedles were welded to a regular tungsten probe in the focused ion beam system at the desired angle, and used as a sharp probe for lift-out. The paper demonstrates the superior mechanical properties of crystalline silver-gallium metallic nanoneedles. Finally, a weldless lift-out process is described whereby a nano-fork gripper was fabricated by attaching two nanoneedles to a tungsten probe.

AbstractWith the concern of the environment, green dry cutting technology is getting more and more attention and self-lubricating tool technology plays an important role in dry cutting. Due to the demand for high temperature performance of tools during dry cutting process, cemented carbide with Ni3Al as the binder phase has received extensive attention due to its excellent high temperature strength and high temperature oxidation resistance. In this paper, WC-TiC-Ni3Al-CaF2 graded self-lubricating material and tools were prepared by microwave heating method, and its microstructure, mechanical properties and cutting performance were studied. Results show that gradient self-lubricating material can be quickly prepared by microwave heating technology, and the strength is equivalent to that of conventional heating technology. CaF2 not only plays a role in self-lubrication, but also refines the grain of the material. A reasonable gradient design can improve the mechanical properties of the material. When the gradient distribution exponent is n1 = 2, the material has high mechanical properties. Cutting experiments show that the WC-TiC-Ni3Al-CaF2 functional gradient self-lubricating tool has better cutting performance than the homogeneous WC-TiC-Ni3Al hard alloys.

The effect of ion beam bombardment on the optical and mechanical properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) was investigated. UHMWPE polymer samples were bombarded with 150 keV N2ions under vacuum at room temperature to high fluences ranging from 1x1016to 2x1017ions cm-2. The untreated as well as treated samples were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer and Vickers micro-hardness techniques. The direct and indirect optical band gap decreased from 2.9 and 1.65 eV for pristine sample to 1.7 and 1 eV for those bombarded with N2ion beam at the highest fluence, respectively. With increasing ion fluence, an increase in the number of carbon atoms per conjugation length, N and number of carbon atoms per cluster, M in a formed cluster were observed. A significant improvement in surface hardness was obtained by increasing the ion fluence.
