Professor Alois Zlatnik (born 1902 in Dvur Kralovy, Czechoslovakia, died 1979 in Brno) was a well-known scientific researcher in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and other European countries. His academic career encompassed forest typology, phytobiocoenology, vegetation ecology and plant taxonomy. His fundamental exploration of the biocoenological structure of the virgin forests of Transcarpathia (Ukraine) commenced in the 1930s. At the same time he can be seen as the founder of long-term forest ecosystem research (ecological monitoring). Zlatnik was also an innovator regarding ecological principles of nature conservation of mountain regions.

A review of literary sources on the diameter distribution of trees and marketability structure of black alder stands in the Slobozhanskyi forest typological district and the whole of Ukraine is carried out, the relevance of this study is established. Comparison of forest typological and forest management zoning is presented for a clearer identification of the study region, as a prerequisite for the creation of regional standards for forestry. The analysis of the distribution of black alder in the forest fund of the study region is carried out and the forestry and evaluation indicators of the alder forest stands are studied. The distribution of black alder stands of the region by origin, forest types, density of stocking and productivity has been evaluated. The evaluation indicators and marketability structure of black alder stands in the study region are considered. Models of the diameter variability of the modal stand, the ratio of the variability of the industrial timber part to the total dimensional variability of the stand, taking into account the minimum and maximum diameters in the modal stand, have been calculated. The relationship between the proportion of industrial timber and the age of modal alder stands of coppice origin has been established. The tables of the marketability structure dynamics of modal alder stands were created, taking into account the distribution of the volumes of industrial timber by dimensional classes, consistent with European approaches to round timber measurement. When compiling the standards, the previously developed yield tables of modal black alder stands of coppice origin of the Slobozhanskyi forest typological district, a comparative analysis of the dynamics of the output of industrial timber in modal black alder stands according to different standards is carried out. When comparing the standards developed for the Slobozhanskyi forest typological district with the standards developed for the whole of Ukraine, it was found that in the latter the output of industrial timber is significantly higher, which is primarily associated with the forest site conditions of the region and the coppice origin of forest stands.

The importance and significance of the conservation of the Emerald Object “The lower part of the Uda River Valley” (UA0000295) in botanical and general ecological aspects is discussed in detail. It is located on the outskirts of Kharkiv with an area of 13,381.0 ha. The studied area combines floodplains of regions occupied by meadows, shrub fragments and forest vegetation, and pine forests with artificial pine plantations. Areas of the loess plateau with arable land and deciduous forests, as well. List of the leading plant species, area's, main ecological and biotic features of identified habitats under Resolution 4 of the Berne Convention, in particular, C1.222, C1.32, C1.33, C3.34, D5.2, E1.2, E2.2, E3.4, F9.1, F3.247, G1.11, G1.21, G1.41, G1.8, G3.4232, G1.A4, G1.A1 for the Emerald Object are presented. The largest areas are occupied by biotops of lowland bogs with sedge and reed thickets without stagnant water (D5.2). There are plain hay fields (E2.2) and wet and moist meadows with a predominance of grasslands (E3.4) and deciduous forests in medium rich and rich soils (G1.A1), fresh and dry forests, and Sarmatian-type forests (G3.4232). The typological diversity of the forest of the territory, the area covered with forest vegetation is 11,585.0 ha, were outlined. Oak (Quercus robur L.) (8,091.5 ha, 69.83%) with a predominance in its plantations of fresh maple-linden oak and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) (2,529.8 ha, 21.84%) with a predominance of fresh oak-pine sedge are the main forest-forming species. Some species have appropriate conservation status in Ukraine (Botrychium lunaria (L.) SW., Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soo s.l., Epipactis palustris (L.) Crantz, Anacamptis coriophora (L.) R.M. Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W. Chase (Orchis coriophora L.), A. palustris (Jacq.) R.M. Bateman, Pridgeon & M.W. Chase (Orchis palustris Jacq.), and several species are protected at the regional level (Centaurium erythraea Rafn., C. pulchellum (Sw.) Druce, Dianthus stenocalyx Juz., Inula helenium L., Iris pseudacorus L., Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim., Caltha palustris L., Geum rivale L., Parnassia palustris L., Sanguisorba officinalis L., Valeriana officinalis L.)

Over the centuries, alongside multiple changes in socio-economical conditions, needs and technical possibilities, Italian forest and forest management have gone through a dynamic and complex evolution process. In the last decade, forest lands in Italy have been constantly growing and nowadays cover almost 11 million hectars, accounting for 36.4% of the total National territory. Several quantitative and qualitative aspects of forest resources, regarding species composition, actual and available stock, ownership, volume of utilization, accessibility, terrain features and others, have been described through the analysis of the National Forest Inventory (INFC2005). The most represented forest typology is »coppice with standards«, while many forests are in a mature stage, waiting for conversion to transitional stands. Concerning forest logging, full length harvesting and winching-skidding extraction are the most widespread systems, but in many areas the low-openness conditions represent a limiting factor for logging distances, expecially in high slope classes, where sustainable and cost-effective operations are primary. The modern solutions allowed by technological progress, in addition to the growing environmental awareness and need of a sustainable management at multiple level require an efficient forest communications management and professional formation of operators, in a challenging scenario that Italy is called to approach.

Results of the analysis of the course of growth of average heights and efficiency of four forest forming species (a poplar black, a poplar white, willows white, an elm smooth) in four landscape and typological groups of types of the wood of a black poplar stand formation are given. Forest typology models and lines of regression of average, minimum and maximum possible values of average heights of forest stands of different age are presented. Comparison of three-level regressions with curves of a bonitet scale for tree species of rapid growth confirms the need of use of forest typology classes of average heights instead of bonitet classes in classification of efficiency of forest stands. Transition to the new system of curves of the course of growth allows developing ecologically reasonable standard reference materials for classification of forest stands by growth, structure and efficiency.

The history of the school has started on 1 September 1986 when a spacious 2nd secondary school in Kupiškis opened the doors for the first time. The first lesson began with 774 pupils and 51 teachers inside. Stanislovas Rugaitis was the first headmaster who led the school until 2001. The education of natural science was chosen as a priority from the very first school year. The community of progymnasium is proud that it was named after professor Povilas Matulionis in 1996. Povilas Matulionis was born on 5 September 1860 in Kupiškis. His activity was diverse and meaningful: scientist, forester and pedagogue, poet and publicist, playwright and even Ascene activities director. He is an originator of forest typology science in Lithuania. Matulionis created the classification table of the forests in Lithuania where the plant sites were divided into 3 groups and 10 species (types). He also designed the volume tables of the major species of trees growing in Lithuania and the formula to calculate the rates of annual deforestation. An agreement of cooperation was sighed with Kupiškis forest enterprise in autumn 1997 which later established the award in behalf of Povilas Matulionis and obligated to help to plant the park as well as support the activity of the young foresters. It has already become a tradition to organise a conference of natural science during an annual name-day of the school. The teams of the school partners usually take part in this event. A dendropark was established on the coast of Račiupys at school area. There are 28 families, 63 tribes and 115 species and shapes of decorative trees and bushes currently growing here. The school became a winner in the observation competition of the best managed environment of schools in the Republic in 2011 and was presented with a commemorative plaque “The best managed school environment 2011”. The community of the school became a member of the collective society to beautify Lithuania in 2001. It is interesting that Povilas Matulionis was a founder of this society. There are a lot of various after school activities: sports, choreography and theatre, art, music, traffic safety, an ethnographic ensemble “Zbitkai”, club of tolerance, the group of fishing enthusiasts “Nasrai”, the organization of shooters and so on. Another after school activity of the forest buddies “Atžalynas” has been active in progymnasium since 1997. The pupils and teachers of the progymnasium willingly participate in feneological observations, club of tolerance, the integrated course of natural science program for 5-8 grades and other projects. The progymnasium took part in the international project NordPlus Junior “STEM-real worlds” in year 2016-2018 and together with the partners from the republic of Latvia Pastende and the republic of Estonia Võru Kreutzwaldi schools engaged in diverse natural science, art, technologies and ecology activities. The progymnasium cooperates with Anykščiai Antanas Vienuolis, Kaunas Garliava Jaunučiai, Rokiškis Juozas Tūbelis and Molėtai progymnasiums, Pasvalys Lėvuo, Alytus Šaltiniai and Vilnius Spindulys basic schools. We became friends with Wormstedt Grundschule school in Germany in 1999. Since then we have been studying German and the Germans – Lithuanian. Currently there are 660 pupils studying and 60 pedagogues working in progymnasium. We are modern, all the time learning, communicative, cooperative and open to changes progymnasium. Keywords: Povilas Matulionis, progymnasium community, school activity, school history.
