A direct numerical simulation study of self-similar compressible flat-plate turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) with pressure gradients (PGs) has been performed for inflow Mach numbers of 0.5 and 2.0. All cases are computed with smooth PGs for both favourable and adverse PG distributions (FPG, APG) and thus are akin to experiments using a reflected-wave set-up. The equilibrium character allows for a systematic comparison between sub- and supersonic cases, enabling the isolation of pure PG effects from Mach-number effects and thus an investigation of the validity of common compressibility transformations for compressible PG TBLs. It turned out that the kinematic Rotta–Clauser parameter $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$ calculated using the incompressible form of the boundary-layer displacement thickness as length scale is the appropriate similarity parameter to compare both sub- and supersonic cases. Whereas the subsonic APG cases show trends known from incompressible flow, the interpretation of the supersonic PG cases is intricate. Both sub- and supersonic regions exist in the boundary layer, which counteract in their spatial evolution. The boundary-layer thickness $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}_{99}$ and the skin-friction coefficient $c_{f}$, for instance, are therefore in a comparable range for all compressible APG cases. The evaluation of local non-dimensionalized total and turbulent shear stresses shows an almost identical behaviour for both sub- and supersonic cases characterized by similar $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$, which indicates the (approximate) validity of Morkovin’s scaling/hypothesis also for compressible PG TBLs. Likewise, the local non-dimensionalized distributions of the mean-flow pressure and the pressure fluctuations are virtually invariant to the local Mach number for same $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$-cases. In the inner layer, the van Driest transformation collapses compressible mean-flow data of the streamwise velocity component well into their nearly incompressible counterparts with the same $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}_{K}$. However, noticeable differences can be observed in the wake region of the velocity profiles, depending on the strength of the PG. For both sub- and supersonic cases the recovery factor was found to be significantly decreased by APGs and increased by FPGs, but also to remain virtually constant in regions of approximated equilibrium.

Mars has only thin atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide that differs significantly from the atmosphere of Earth in terms of characteristics of reentry flows. To connect with the orbiter, the Mars entry capsule is provided with titanium pipes and other units installed on the heat-shield. These units will create significant local interaction flow on the surface of the capsule and cause additional heating on the surface of the shield during the entry of the capsule. With a view to interaction thermal environment issues for the surface of the shield, in this paper, the characteristics of protrusion interaction flow on different location of the shield were studied by means of numerical simulation. Heating mechanisms of protuberances on different location were derived by analyzing characteristic parameters such as local flow velocity, pressure, and Mach number. The results show that the interaction thermal environment of protuberances in the windward area is smaller than that of protuberances in the leeward area, mainly because subsonic flow dominates in the windward area, and the interaction is weak, while in the leeward area, the direction of flow intersects with protuberances to form a boundary layer shear flow, which results in a stronger interaction before the protuberances.

AbstractIn this paper, direct numerical simulation (DNS) is presented for spatially evolving turbulent boundary layer over an isothermal flat-plate atMa∞= 2.25,5,6,8. WhenMa∞= 8, two cases with the ratio of wall-to-reference temperatureTω/T∞= 1.9 and 10.03 are considered respectively. The wall temperature approaches recovery temperatures for other cases. The characteristics of compressible turbulent boundary layer (CTBL) affected by freestream Mach number and wall temperature are investigated. It focuses on assessing compressibility effects and the validity of Morkovin's hypothesis through computing and analyzing the mean velocity profile, turbulent intensity, the strong Reynolds analogy (SRA) and possibility density function of dilatation term. The results show that, when the wall temperature approaches recovery temperature, the effects of Mach number on compressibility is insignificant. As a result, the compressibility effect is very weak and the Morkovin's hypothesis is still valid for Mach number even up to 8. However, when Mach number equal to 8, the wall temperature effect on the compressibility is sensitive. In this case, whenTω/T∞= 1.9, the Morkovin's hypothesis is not fully valid. The validity of classical SRA depends on wall temperature directly. A new modified SRA is proposed to eliminate such negative factor in near wall region. Finally the effects of Mach number and wall temperature on streaks are also studied.

A theoretical and numerical study is carried out to investigate the transformation of the wave boundary layer from non-depth-limited (wave-like boundary layer) to depth-limited one (current-like boundary layer) over a smooth bottom. A long period of wave motion is not sufficient to induce depth-limited properties, although it has simply been assumed in various situations under long waves, such as tsunami and tidal currents. Four criteria are obtained theoretically for recognizing the inception of the depth-limited condition under waves. To validate the theoretical criteria, numerical simulation results using a turbulence model as well as laboratory experiment data are employed. In addition, typical field situations induced by tidal motion and tsunami are discussed to show the usefulness of the proposed criteria.

A detailed unsteady numerical simulation has been carried out to investigate the shock systems in the high pressure (HP) turbine rotor and unsteady shock-wake interaction between coupled blade rows in a 1+1/2 counter-rotating turbine (VCRT). For the VCRT HP rotor, due to the convergent-divergent nozzle design, along almost all the span, fishtail shock systems appear after the trailing edge, where the pitch averaged relative Mach number is exceeding the value of 1.4 and up to 1.5 approximately (except the both endwalls). A group of pressure waves create from the suction surface after about 60% axial chord in the VCRT HP rotor, and those waves interact with the inner-extending shock (IES). IES first impinges on the next HP rotor suction surface and its echo wave is strong enough and cannot be neglected, then the echo wave interacts with the HP rotor wake. Strongly influenced by the HP rotor wake and LP rotor, the HP rotor outer-extending shock (OES) varies periodically when moving from one LP rotor leading edge to the next. In VCRT, the relative Mach numbers in front of IES and OES are not equal, and in front of IES, the maximum relative Mach number is more than 2.0, but in front of OES, the maximum relative Mach number is less than 1.9. Moreover, behind IES and OES, the flow is supersonic. Though the shocks are intensified in VCRT, the loss resulted in by the shocks is acceptable, and the HP rotor using convergent-divergent nozzle design can obtain major benefits.

Efforts to reduce the specific fuel consumption of a modern aero engine focus in particular on increasing the by-pass ratio beyond the current level of around 5. One concept is the counterrotating shrouded propfan operating at low overall pressure ratio and having only very few fan blades of extremely high pitch/chord ratios. The relative inlet Mach numbers cover a range from 0.7 at the hub to 1.1 at the tip section of the first rotor. A propfan cascade was designed by taking into account two characteristic features of a propfan blade-blade section: • a very high pitch/chord ratio of s/c = 2.25 • an inlet Mach number of M1 = 0.90 which leads to transonic flow conditions inside the blade passage In the design process a profile generator and a quasi-3D Euler solver were used iteratively to optimize the profile Mach number distribution. Boundary layer behavior was checked with an integral boundary layer code. The cascade design was verified experimentally in the transonic cascade wind tunnel of DLR at Cologne. The extensive experimental results confirm the design goal of roughly 5 degree flow turning. A total pressure loss coefficient of less than 1.5% was measured at design conditions. This validates the very high efficiency level the propfan concept is calling for. A 2D Navier-Stokes flow analysis code yields good results in comparison to the experimental ones.
