The bromination of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was performed with vapor bromine in a closed vessel, and they were subjected to intensive stirring with a magnetic stirrer for up to 14 days. The efficiency of bromination was compared depending upon duration. The structure and surface of the crude and purified products were characterized by detailed physicochemical analyses, such as SEM/EDS, TEM, XRD, TGA, Raman, and XPS spectroscopies. The studies confirmed the presence of bromine covalently bound with nanotubes as well as the formation of inclusion MWCNT–Br2 complexes. It was confirmed that Br2 molecules are absorbed on the surface of nanotubes (forming the CNT-Br2 complex), while they can dissociate close to dangling bonds at CNT defect sites with the formation of covalent C−Br bonds. Thus, any covalent attachment of bromine to the graphitic surface achieved around room temperature is likely related to the defects in the MWCNTs. The best results, i.e., the highest amount of attached Br2, were obtained for brominated nanotubes brominated for 10 days, with the content of covalently bound bromine being 0.68 at% (by XPS).

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were irradiated by 1.2 keV Ar ion beams for 15–60 min at room temperature with current density of 60 µA/cm2. The morphology and microstructure are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that carbon nanofibers are achieved after 60 min ion irradiation and the formation of carbon nanofibers proceeds through four periods, carbon nanotubes—amorphous carbon nanowires—carbon nanoparticles along the tube axis—conical protrusions on the nanoparticles surface—carbon nanofibers from the conical protrusions.

Effect of acid and heat treatments of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on benzene detection was investigated. For acid treatment, MWCNTs were treated by hydrochloric acid (HCl) for 1 h meanwhile other batches of MWCNTs were treated by heating under air ambient at 500°C for 1 h. Pristine, HCl-treated and heat-treated MWCNTs were separately coated with ethyl cellulose (EC) by spin-coating prior to fabrication of three different sensors named as EC/pristine MWCNTs, EC/HCl-MWCNTs and EC/heat-MWCNTs sensors, respectively. Each fabricated sensor was exposed to benzene vapor at room temperature for testing its sensing performance based on an increase in its electrical resistance which was sensitive to benzene vapor. Response of the sensors fabricated from EC/HCl-MWCNTs and EC/heat-MWCNTs were 3.66 and 1.92 times higher than that of EC/pristine MWCNTs, respectively. Sensitivity of all sensors would be attributed to swelling of EC, resulting in loosening of MWCNT network after benzene vapor exposure. In addition, the difference of sensing response of the EC/pristine MWCNTs when compared with those of EC/HCl-MWCNTs and EC/heat-MWCNTs would be ascribed to different crystallinity and functionalization of MWCNTs sidewalls, suggesting that acid and heat treatments of MWCNTs would be promising techniques for improvement of benzene detection.

Strongly bonded arrays of vertically aligned, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been successfully grown on Ta foils, and provide a convenient basis for fabricating electrodes with high conductivity and stability. The MWNT arrays were further coated by nanostructured MnO2 through reacting with KMnO4 solution at room temperature. The morphology of the MnO2/MWNT nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the MnO2 is a beehive-like nanostructure that is homogeneously and densely coated on the surface of the MWNTs. The capacitance of the MWNT electrode was significantly increased from 0.14 to 6.81 mF cm–2 after being modified with nanostructured MnO2, that is, the mass-specific capacitance of the bare and MnO2-modified MWNTs was about 33 and 446 F g–1, respectively. The MnO2/MWNT nanocomposite on Ta foils could be potential for developing a supercapacitor.
