The aim of the research is to estimate the X-ray shielding properties of different glass systems using Monte Carlo Simulation. X-ray glass is also known as radiation shielding glass. Glass provides protection against the absorption of energy radiation. The shielding layer is formed by a high concentration of lead and barium. The mass attenuation coefficient, the effective atomic number and the effective electron density are used to determine the position of gamma-ray photons in matter. Shield characterization in terms of mass attenuation coefficient (μm), transmission fraction (T), effective atomic numbers (Zeff), half-value layer (HVL) and exposure build-up. factor (EBF) of a glass system is estimated by the Monte Carlo Simulation. The random sampling and statistical analysis are computed using the monte carlo simulation. Various external factors are considered as the input parameters. The different composition of the glass will be examined using the Monte Carlo simulation and the shielding capability would be determined for the various samples.

This study is to find a parameters that necessary for fabricating a radiation shielding glass in x-ray room. In this study, we performed a comparison of commercial lead glass product commercial window, and developed lead-free glass in the composition of xBaO:20ZnO:(80-x)B2O3 which are applied used for lead glass replacement. The result found that, the linear attenuation coefficients (m) were increased with the increase of BaO concentrations and the decrease of an x-ray tube voltage. The developed glass samples were investigated in terms of half value layer (HVL) and mean free path (MFP) that found to be decreased with the increase of BaO concentrations which the good characteristics for application in a x-ray shielding glass manufacturing.

The gamma ray and X-ray shielding properties of PVA containing different proportions of BaSO4 as an aggregate have been investigated. The photon linear attenuation coefficients were measured by using 241Am radioactive source (59.54 keV). Gamma rays were counted by a NaI(Tl) detector. It was found that the shielding efficiency increased when increasing the amount of BaSO4 and specimen thickness. The linear attenuation coefficients were 0.085, 0.125, 0.179, and 0.189 for 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8%w/v of BaSO4. The X-ray attenuation test was performed using the diagnostic X-ray machine for energy of 45 kVp. The optical density of X-ray films was investigated. The results showed that the optical density of X-ray film decreased when increasing the amounts of BaSO4.
