The valley degree of freedom, like the spin degree of freedom in spintronics, is regarded as a new information carrier, promoting the emerging valley photonics. Although there exist topologically protected valley edge states which are immune to optical backscattering caused by defects and sharp edges at the inverse valley Hall phase interfaces composed of ordinary optical dielectric materials, the dispersion and the frequency range of the edge states cannot be tuned once the geometrical parameters of the materials are determined. In this paper, we propose a chirped valley graphene plasmonic metamaterial waveguide composed of the valley graphene plasmonic metamaterials (VGPMs) with regularly varying chemical potentials while keeping the geometrical parameters constant. Due to the excellent tunability of graphene, the proposed waveguide supports group velocity modulation and zero group velocity of the edge states, where the light field of different frequencies focuses at different specific locations. The proposed structures may find significant applications in the fields of slow light, micro–nano-optics, topological plasmonics, and on-chip light manipulation.

AbstractWe theoretically report the finding of a new kind of topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a topological metal state where the closing-reopening of bandgap is accompanied by passing the Fermi level through an additional band. The resulting nontrivial topological metal phase is characterized by stable zero-energy localized edge states that exist within the full gapless bulk states. Such states living on a quasi-one-dimensional system with three sublattices per unit cell are protected by hidden inversion symmetry. While other required symmetries such as chiral, particle-hole, or full inversion symmetry are absent in the system.

AbstractTwisted bilayered systems such as bilayered graphene exhibit remarkable properties such as superconductivity at magic angles and topological insulating phases. For generic twist angles, the bilayers are truly quasiperiodic, a fact that is often overlooked and that has consequences which are largely unexplored. Herein, we uncover that twisted n-layers host intrinsic higher dimensional topological phases, and that those characterized by second Chern numbers can be found in twisted bi-layers. We employ phononic lattices with interactions modulated by a second twisted lattice and reveal Hofstadter-like spectral butterflies in terms of the twist angle, which acts as a pseudo magnetic field. The phason provided by the sliding of the layers lives on 2n-tori and can be used to access and manipulate the edge states. Our work demonstrates how multi-layered systems are virtual laboratories for studying the physics of higher dimensional quantum Hall effect, and can be employed to engineer topological pumps via simple twisting and sliding.

The electronic structures and transition properties of three types of triangle MoS2 clusters, A (Mo edge passivated with two S atoms), B (Mo edge passivated with one S atom), and C (S edge) have been explored using quantum chemistry methods. The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)–lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap of B and C is larger than that of A, due to the absence of the dangling of edge S atoms. The frontier orbitals (FMOs) of A can be divided into two categories, edge states from S3p at the edge and hybrid states of Mo4d and S3p covering the whole cluster. Due to edge/corner states appearing in the FMOs of triangle MoS2 clusters, their absorption spectra show unique characteristics along with the edge structure and size.

Mid-gap 1D topological states and their electronic properties on different 2D hybrid structures are investigated using the tight binding Hamiltonian and the Green’s function technique. There are considered straight armchair-edge and zig-zag Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) chains coupled with real 2D electrodes which density of states (DOS) are characterized by the van Hove singularities. In this work, it is shown that such 2D substrates substantially influence topological states end evoke strong asymmetry in their on-site energetic structures, as well as essential modifications of the spectral density function (local DOS) along the chain. In the presence of the surface singularities the SSH topological state is split, or it is strongly localized and becomes dispersionless (tends to the atomic limit). Additionally, in the vicinity of the surface DOS edges this state is asymmetrical and consists of a wide bulk part together with a sharp localized peak in its local DOS structure. Different zig-zag and armachair-edge configurations of the chain show the spatial asymmetry in the chain local DOS; thus, topological edge states at both chain ends can appear for different energies. These new effects cannot be observed for ideal wide band limit electrodes but they concern 1D topological states coupled with real 2D hybrid structures.
