The Large Technical System approach was introduced by the influential historian of technology, Thomas P. Hughes, in the 1970’s and is one of the most prominent theoretical frameworks within the Science and Technology Studies. However, it has found little attention in relation to the digital realm. This research applies the LTS framework onto the US-American company Google and seeks to bring a conceptual understanding to the company’s exponential growth. Thus, it describes the emergence and evolution of Google as a complex system – an alignment of components of technical and non-technical nature – and assigns patterns and concepts to its development. This research provides an answer to how Google not only gained a system structure but also reached the notion of momentum. Yet, suggesting a social constructivist path, this paper secludes by elucidating the influencing power of the LTS’s user – an important factor which was widely disregarded in the initial works of Hughes.

The paper substantiates the necessity of using the system analysis as an effective tool for studying security problems, in particular the problems of ensuring natural and man-made safety, in the study of natural and anthropogenic threats. The article shows the interrelation and interdependence of natural and man-made safety factors, which is confirmed at the fundamental level today. The article identifies the main types of natural- anthropogenic hazards, such as those of natural, man-made, social character. To study the problems of natural and man-made safety, the model of an ecological-technogenic system is proposed, which adequately reflects the main processes that determine the problems of natural and man-made safety; the specificity of the system approach to problems of natural and man-made safety is determined. This model allows us to classify the risks of the complex system operation. The article, using the methodology of system analysis, highlights the most important methodological principles to be followed when exploring ecological and man-made systems as well. They are: the principle of optimal simplicity, the principle of social responsibility, the principle of interdisciplinarity of the ecological-technogenic system, the principle of objectivity, the principle of hierarchy of goals, the principle of values and “economic realism”, the principle of analysing of constantly developing systems, the principle of system synthesis. The author formulates the main stages of the system analysis of natural and technological safety problems. The author concludes that developing the fundamentals of risk-based analysis of emergency situation consequences requires a special attention.

Telecommunication service providers, also called operators or carriers, must maintain 99.999% of their telecom network availability. To avoid or mitigate the effects of an outage in the network, carriers perform different activities to restore service. Spare parts management plays an important role in meeting the required service. Unfortunately, the closed-loop supply chain that supports the availability of spare parts experiences variability in its processes as a result of endogenous and exogenous variables that make matching the recovery process with the demand process difficult. Understanding the effect of the variables on the variability outcome and the emergence of the variability can help to guide the development of future mathematical models for the management of spare parts. In this article, a complex system approach to analyze the variability behavior is presented.
